In university I ended up asking if professors could send me slides of the lecture, the easiest way to explain it for me was "I dont pay attention to what your saying because I'm to focused on writing down what you're saying, and then I have no idea what's going on." I had no other way to explain it🤷‍♀️

I feel you there, I have dyspraxia and all my childhood it was like "You just have poor coordination, but you can fix that by practising more." Well, kind of? Yes you can improve the way you handle your disability but your not really "fixing" it, more applying a bandage. It took me until early this year age 21 to finally get a diagnosis now I'm at university. If you can afford it, I highly recommend trying to get diagnosed, regardless of what your parents think. If you do end up going to uni you can get a reduced rate, otherwise ask your GP.

Shocking! I do not have dyslexia. I COULD NOT keep up with listening, thinking, writing while inserting the “correct letter exchange”! God bless you my sweet Grandson and all dyslexic’s. While trying this exercise for yourself, please remember YOU are the dyslectic person. The dyslectic YOU are the one experiencing this EVERY MOMENT of reading, writing, listening .... trying to comprehend a simple word takes many steps for each word. Then to take that “word” and translate it into a sentence of MULTIPLE “words”. As my daughter explains, these kids are exhausted because their brains are doing quadruple the mental work. Plus emotionally worrying if they got it right or wrong. Be Kind!

I'm constantly looking back up at whatever the teacher has for us to copy because I can't remember more than 2-3 words and write them down at the same time. Basically, I look up from my notes more frequently then the girl in the video had to in order to get the notes down. Also I was diagnosed with dyslexia in 3rd grade.

I was wondering if any other dyslexics experiences this: I routinely don't enjoy new music the first time I hear it. But the second time I do. I read this is related to dyslexia in a round about way. From the book "this is your brain on music" the author explains that the timing center of the brain allows one to get a sense of pleasure from anticipating the completion of patterns in rhythms and melodies even if one has never heard them before. In another part of the book, he says that dyslexia is (at least in part) a defect in this timing center of the brain. Although he never put the 2 thoughts together, it goes to follow that having dyslexia might preclude one from being able to enjoy unfamiliar music. So I wonder if other dyslectics like me might have the same difficulty. I have experienced this all my life but only became aware of it after reading the book.

Think about it like when you are writing you go to write something and you write something else. A common one is J and G. So in order to prevent this happening you have to think and correct these before you write them. If you don't do that you end up writing the wrong thing. So essentially the opposite of what she is doing. Now imagine you are writing down something that someone else is saying, the whole process adds and extra layer on top making it a lot harder. I have had a lot of my problems corrected now so don't tend to make this mistakes anymore so it makes the whole process a lot easier, but I remember what it was like when I was younger.

Oh, this is good at explaining what's going on! I was trying to keep up with what was being said and wound up with mostly gibberish and lots of overwrites, just like my dyslexic colleague's notes. I always assumed it was that the letters were present but became instantly jumbled: running *every letter* through a memory test is much more brain-intensive, and makes dyslexics spelling anything at all very impressive.

I look back on my life and I think Jesus Christ, no wonder everything seemed so hard. It wasn't my imagination, it was really hard. I'm 61 and just took an on-line test last week that has a 97% accuracy for flagging dyslexia. I got a 7/9. No one ever diagnosed me, no one ever helped me. I was on my own figuring it out. I always knew my brain was off, but I thought it was just slightly off - slow reading, trouble alphabetizing, problems with Left/Right, difficulty remembering numbers, hopeless spelling, trouble with foreign languages, street signs weren't immediately comprehensible for me, difficulty reading out-loud, etc. But when you add it all up and a bunch of stuff that I didn't know was due to dyslexia like trouble with sequential instructions. Turns out it's more than slightly off. And holy shit is that a lot of work! Everything was a cost/benefit analysis where I'd weigh whether the outcome was worth the effort and I just figured I just wasn't willing to do that much work. I knew it was harder for me, but 5 times harder?

I'm quite ambivalent to how well this example works in gaining empathy to the challenges of dyslexia for the individual. While this is challenging for the person trying to take down this dictation with the letter substitutions it was only for a breaf duration. Also with practice for this individual there ability to make these substitutions will improve. Also there was a handy guide directly in front of them to remind them of the letter substitutions. Also the narration was slow and the person taking the dictation was able to say when they were ready to hear the next bit. For a non-dyslexic watching this I would be concerned that this single example may just feed the problem associated with using badges as a suggestion of understanding. One minute and eleven seconds does not compare to the life long challenges for the dyslexic person. While the person taking the dictation found it difficult. I don't believe it accurately replicates the relentless feeling of being overwhelmed, the frustration, rapid exhaustion but you have no choice but to just try and keep on going with no end. Also in most situations where information is being dictated there is no provision for the individual taking notes to keep up. Also there can be the additional problem of people packing out what it is there saying and significantly increasing the work load of taking notes for the dyslexic individual. Even articulating the pen to write the actual shapes of the letters, there correct order, not susituting them and getting them the right way around. If I were to Say that pen gets progressively heavier would not be an accurate way to describe it. This can be enough in itself to be overwhelming. As you progressively tire even words you are normally able to spell start to be come difficult. Your bashing out sentences ov words then you mind gets locked on there is an error, you know it's there and even if you do see it you just cant process it. The simplest can be the worst leading you off on a heart breaking tangent. "ov" there is something wrong with that. "ov" it looks right but why does it seem wrong. "ov" is it wrong. "ov" something doesn't match. "ov" OK clear the mind and try and visualise it. "ov" NO! "ov" now the pen is resisting me writing it, there is something definitely wrong. "ov" where have I used this before. "ov" is this written somewhere where i can see it. "ov" ok try and calm down, use breathing. "ov" ignore it just keep writing. "ov" it's wrong. "ov" go away. "ov" it's simple, I know this. "ov" "ov" "ov" will you just go away. "ov" I just want to cry now. "ov"! "ov" f#@k!! "ov"... ... ... it's, it's, come on letters, please, I can almost touch them... ... ... I'm going to burst a blood vessel... ... ... ___ "of" ___ that them. Those are the lettersm the word. I know these. Why couldn't I construct them. Oh s#%t what did they just say. Will I even be able to read my notes. I'm tired. Is it really worth the effort it takes. No I want to learn. Is it this hard for everyone else. Everyone else seems to be coping. Am I some how lazy. Am I dumb. NO don't! They have wiped the notes off the board. Sorry could I borrow your notes, they were going a bit to fast for me, I will get them back to you after lunch. They have cursive handwriting, are these even letters. I'm hungry but I don't have enough time to eat. I'm a failure. I need to try harder. I feel weak. I can't ask them to slow down for me as that will hold everyone else up. I'm drowning. I'm defective. I need to work harder. I must work harder. I'm required to work harder to make up for my errors. I know staying up late makes me more tired and things harder, but I just need to try and push through. It wont, cant be like before. There will be a point eventually where I can stop and rest, just a for little bit. Will there? Bit of a tangent there but in a small part what education and higher education can be like. This also carries into the workplace. Badges don't convey the impact, only the illustration of understanding.

While I like to think I'm sympathetic to the learning differences that dyslexics face, I still believe that foundational skills are important to set everyone up for the best success possible. For example, I watch this young woman holding her pen as if it's some kind of weapon or at least some awkward instrument that she can't control. With that grip, she'd be hard pressed to keep up with the dictation even without the letter substitutions. I think our education systems have failed a couple of generations by skipping over pen control and penmanship to name two skills that would have helped in this exercise.

This in interesting but for me dyslexia is more like spoken and written language are two different language. The best examples i can come up with is it like taking note in a language you can speak fluently but not read or write. To all the dyslexia out there keep working at it find what work for you and run with what we are all different some thing will work some not. Never give up never surrender.

Now instead of pausing to let her catch up read it as if you were teaching a class at a normal pace. Then forget about the “well done” at the end and tell them they need to pay more attention 😂

I think I have dyslexia (I wrote dislexiya) but my parents don't believe me that much. I'm not that good academically. I mean our grading system is from 2 to 6 and y is the best and 2 is the worst. And I get 5 or 5.50 mostly. I can't spell that good but I'm always ok. Ppl can't suspect dyslexia. But what they don't know is that when I write I have to wait 5 seconds to remember what was the next letter. They don't know that I write capital letters in the middle of words. I lose my place when I'm reading. I love reading tho. I can't tell left from wright. When we know I'm 14 that is ridiculous.I write what I hear like somewhat - somwat. Read - Reed. Spaghetti- spageti. That - Dat. Soo many more! I have difficulty telling time on a round clock or then it's 18:00 I can't tell what it is. Is it 6pm? Is it 7pm? And I have many more things to say but that's all I can think of. Pls if you are diagnosed tell me if it's the same for you cuz I genuinely believe I have dyslexia. My mother seems to have it too and my brother too. Thanks if you read this far 😁

I find that for me to "study" to really comprehend what I am reading, it takes me about twice as long as most other readers. I read at about the same pace as one might read aloud. Oddly I am not aware of any specific difficulty reading at all. I don't find any letters to be confusing or in need of translation. The way I read feels perfectly normal to me. I would also add that I never read for pleasure.

Now imagine doing this all day, and with the symptoms of adhd. You don't remember the instruction becauce of poor working memory, and you can't keep up with the excercise because of your attention deficit. School becomes a living hell.

Honestly I didn't have much trouble with substituting letters (besides completely forgetting one of the rules) but the speed was the issue for me. I wouldn't have been able to keep up even if I had to write it normally. Not dyslexic btw.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia in 3rd grade. Note taking was and still is one of the hardest things for me to do. Someone explained below that they told their professors that when they take notes, they don't hear anything because they are so busy focusing on writing down notes. I have the same problem. Now that I'm in college, I ask someone from each class I am taking if they would like to be a note taker for me. I still take my own notes, but almost half the time, those taking notes for me pick up on extra details that I missed or couldn't finish writing before moving on. I'm also allowed to have a voice recorder during lectures so I can go home a listen to it again. This simulation pretty much sums up how I feel when trying to take notes during class. The amount of times I have to stop and look up because I can't remember more than 2-3 words at a time or not being able to write complete sentences without a visual because I can't remember the order or what was just said. I'm still writing the first sentence and it's already time to move on. My thoughts get all jumbled up and it's difficult to put them down on paper.

That's exactly how it is you look at the screen then before you look away to right it down you have to look at it again because it dont register quick enough.......I got diagnosed early in my life i think i was 7-8 but since I have left school and had got certified as a gas engineer I have had to read/write/spell everyday and my friends say for a dyslexic person my hand writing is neat and good and I can read better then half of them and my spelling is still abit shabby 😀......but my skills side is brilliant problem solving/fixing is not bad but recently I have wondered if I could use my dyslexia and my creative side to follow and more interesting carrier

The dictation was difficult even for those ones who don't have dyslexia because it was too fast and without repeating. So for dyslexics it is twice unfair.

I’ve been diagnosed with dyslexia and bro if i ever have to take notes i look at the bored like a zombie. Cus how am i supposed to say “oh yeah, im not listening to what your saying cus im to busy writting down what you just said and i have no idea whatsoever with whats going on and now I’ve forgotten about half of things you’ve said and yeah but now iv forgotten like everything cus im now distracted” like i shit you not, thats like my life with dyslexia and ADHD at the same time- and its like hell, and the teacher comes up to me and is like “i cant read what you said, could you explain?” And im like “b-but its there, right there you just cant read it(course i dont say it out loud)” “bro i thought you were here to helo me learn, not make it easier for yourself” I tried this and i was like… w-what, its harder to do it and its so much easier to do it naturally, i have severe dyslexia and when i give a handwritten assignment back and they are like “ehm, i cant understand what you wrote and im haveing a terrible time trying to read this so if you could maybe just read it out loud?” Like no, no i can not, i dont even know what i wrote, just think back and thats whatever this is. But the amount of odd capital letters in my hand writting is horrid. And at this point im not even surpised about no one cant read my handwriting

I think in every country in the world should have assisted technology for adult people with dyslexia help read and write mandatory. In school, All kind of libraries, courthouses, State House, government buildings, trade schools, organizations that help you find jobs, Banks, credit union colleges. I believe we got far in with helping dyslexia people but not enough for the adults that's dealing with it everyday

I am Peter, a retired USN, Navy Chief, who is born with Dyslexia! 1. Are you Dyslexic? If your not, then.... trying to explain what it like to be able to navigate reading, grammar, punctuation usage, forming sentences to track a story, or intent of the paragraph you are linking sentences together to create paragraphs, so they track theme of the paragraph; you don’t have that experience of success! Just you trying to explain it is painful, to those lessening! This isn’t a difficult task! How you determine where any Dyslexic is at is simple exercises which reveal what needs to be improved over time! The only way to do this, is to connect with your students on a human level! They need your help, to under why they are interpreting what they see, as they see it! Writing is a balancing act!
