Or sometimes if I'm walking with a friend and there is something on the path, I would say, watch out to your right but I really mean left.

“My child is NOT dyslexic!” The child in 12th grade: who are you again, and where is that thing? On the left or right?
@cianaordetx9182 жыл бұрын
I answered yes to several of those questions never really diagnosed with dyslexia. When I was in seventh grade in the mid nineties, my teacher told my mom to get me evaluated but they said that I was just immature for my age. Later as I got into high school and ready for college getting Nothing higher than a c at the most. Suffered horribly with reading comprehension and writing. I was at home on summer in college, watching tv and the Cosby show was on. It was the episode when Theo learns that he is dyslexic. It was a light bulb moment. I realize that I could relate to every thing that Theo described was happening with him. So I did research and took what I learned from the show about organization and don’t worry about finishing my degree in college like many students. I took 2-3 courses a semester and color coded everything for each class with a separate notebook or binder. Changed my major four different times and ended up getting my AA in early childhood education at 28, stopped going to school and worked as a preschool teacher for several years, four years later, at 32, I went back to school to complete my bachelors degree in elementary education. Graduated with my degree in elementary education at 37, since I worked part time and went to school, had no social life on the weekends since they were devoted to my homework aside from the two hours I had at work while the students were napping. Now at 41, I am currently a first year teacher teaching reading and writing in a third grade. I teach my students that as long as you do your best and keep trying that you can overcome any obstacle.

Being dyslexic dosent always affect reading and is different for everyone. There may be certain things do and don't struggle with. "Disorientation" is a really good way to describe the feeling at least. When I was a kid, on top of my dyslexia, I had a difficult time understanding why you can't add more information into words. So instead of putting words in order you just add the descriptive word into it. So it would be "App5le" instead of "Five apples." It took many years to understand that you shouldn't write this way and I was really confused why you couldn't just combine things like this. I also can't recognize people including family members outside of context. It's made life very difficult.
@PeteLuther4 жыл бұрын
It really dose feel like disorientation. And it takes a lot to orientate your words back into an order others understand. Thst why we have to work so much harder than others but also how we can see things in a different way to others. But thats my next video. Keep crushing it 💪👊🙌

I was late diagnosed dyslexic (mid 50s) and it was one of the best things I ever did. Not only did so much of my life and struggles make more sense, but the testing org also gave me counselling to help overcome the psychological damage left by being undiagnosed for so long. Dyslexia does bring problems, but also gifts that are worth celebrating.

Other than the creative spelling, I check all these boxes. There are a few words I seem to never remember the spelling for, but overall I spell very well (which I attribute to receiving high quality early education). I've learned to cope with reading difficulties in my own way, and even though I DO need to re-read things often because it doesn't come out right the first time or two, I was able to persevere because I developed a huge love for reading in late middle school thanks to thriller and sci-fi novels. I dropped out of high-school but eventually graduated college and am now an Elementary school teacher who LOVES teaching reading 📚

Does anyone else have problems speaking? they find themselves thinking one thing and saying something else; it's happened to me where I've said the wrong think like 3 times before (knowing it's wrong) before I said what I wanted to say to begin with. Even names I get wrong even If I've known people for a long time I'll call them someone else name and then I can't remember their name (it's usually temporary and short time - then I remember it) My thought process and speech pattern is also choppy because I can't remember simple things. What is wrong with me???? :-(

Yes thats quite common. Think it's a short term memory thing. We have 8 week old twins as I write this and I have discovered that sleep deprecation pushes it to another in level. I can't remember a word from most sentences! (well almost). I find people are understanding on the whole if you explain. I try super hard to remember people's names because I know that the most important word to them (their name).

Well I can relate to all of that. Sounds tuff. I really think you should get yourself checked out by an educational psychologist local to you who tests for dyslexia. Or if your still at school then ask them to test you there. (its not the same test but would help you know your needs). I always read certain sentences more than 2 or 3 times when im reading a book and find myself unable to process the meaning out of it for a few seconds. I thought thats because I'm losing my concentration often.🤔 What about that?!
@PeteLuther4 жыл бұрын
Hard to say as I don't know you but for most dyslexics reading is hard work and so takes more conentration and therefore makes keeping concentration hard. Losing concentration is also a comen thing these days because we are often super entertained. For me I find listening to books while moving the best way to get information in but it helps if I'm interested in the book and some just don't get me and then I find it impossible to consentrate. I think I also have ADHD which is an attention defisit disorder so that's a factor for me. These days there are lots of different ways to learn aside for reading too. It's good to read though and practice. I here there are ways of helping with this issue but that's beyond my knowledge there.

Hello, I’ve recentely been researching on dyslexia and dyscaluia and it’s has come to my knowledge that I might have them, because I always have struggled with math, it just doesn’t stick to me, and reading and spelling don’t doo good to me either, I always mix up words, letters, and read then reread again and stuff I got a 9 on the test but my parents don’t really believe me, my Dad sort of does he’s looking more into it, because I was concerned i has it, but my mom says my teacher or tutor would notice but what if they where not like uhhh, trained? I guess for it, I just I don’t know who to get help any suggestions?
@PeteLuther3 жыл бұрын
If there was a teacher who you could apeoach or a learning support department in your school that would be a good starting point or if your dad can help that's also good. It depends alot on your area. 9 is a good score so it might be good to investigate further. Having an official test costs but sometimes your school. Can do an assessment that gives them an indication of support you may need. Let me know how it goes.

you cannot trust teachers to know. They are not usually taught about dyslexia. I made the mistake of putting my girl into public school when I suspected dyslexia thinking they would know how to help her. They messed her up more than I would have if I had continued homeschooling. NOTE, she is not our biological child and I was afraid to try to teach her when I did not understand it well enough. I wish now I had stuck with it and had her cyber school use a different program for her They later 'threw out' the program she was in because many parents complained it was too intense for the kids. I was using cyber school from pre_k to 2 yrs of grade 1

it is not uncommon for children to reverse letters and some numbers but it usually will correct by age 8. Unfortunately for the dyslexic person it does not correct itself. And, unfortunately, there are still many schools that refuse to test for dyslexia or say you cannot test for it until age 8. Even then, they often will not provide the phonics based instruction that would help so many.

I answered yes to all of them and I've done some tests too on the internet to find out if I am dyslexic. I'm 30 and still struggling through dyslexia. I have a very low vocabulary and processing speed. Although I agree to most of the things you said in the video, but I dont really think there are any gifts we are born with. I dont know about others but in my case, I dont have any gift. I am also not creative at all. I used to be pathetic academically throughout my school life until I realised I just need to be more focused than others. I suffer from so so so many problems due to dyslexia I cant even begin to tell. I lose my attention midway a conversation and then have people repeat. This is fine when happening with friends/family but not on a professional level. I cant pronounce the simple words properly and have had people mock me for these things. I wish I knew about my problems earlier in life then I would have chosen a different career path. I chose journalism and in journalism, you just cant be dyslexic. You need to have a good command over a language (i dont have a command over any, not even my mother tongue, bengali), you need to be attentive while taking interviews (i am very very inattentive and forgetful) and you need to be good with words (words scare me). I loathed journalism until i quit. I am sorry, but i dont think it is a gift at all for me.
