I think it's something like: if everyone assumes that they will be told, then no one fears being the secret mario, because you will be told. But if no one tells, then the only way to figure it out is to find out for yourself, which means you might to cagey with info, overly defend your neighbors etc. And if multiple people do that, that helps evil cause chaos.
