Hi! I recently made some ornaments using acrylic gouache. I was really sad to see some of them crack so I went to the hardware store and they recommended polycrylic gloss (I purchased water based, clear satin). I just put my first coat on (front and back) and am waiting to apply a second. I can still hear the ornaments occasionally ‘pop’ while they are curing with the varnish. I’m a small business owner and am making these for a holiday craft market. I’m worried they will crack after purchase. Do you notice cracking after you’ve varnished them? Thank you!! I’m so thankful to have an artist talk about this process and that I’m not alone…because I was so heartbroken when they cracked.

I have the same issues and don't know what I am doing different from the videos that makes them crack.
@feelingnifty Жыл бұрын
I’ve had some of them crack too. I read somewhere that sometimes when the company sends them out they haven’t had a full chance to dry. If you’ve just received them you can leave them out for a couple days ( without painting on them) so they have more time to dry. They other thing it could be is adding to thin/liquidy a paint or too thick a layer. The more moisture on the wood might cause it to crack- just a hypothesis. You can try adding thin layers and even try drying them with a hairdryer to see if that helps. The last thing you could do is apply a solution to it to make sure they’re fully dried before painting on them, like in this article www.wikihow.com/Dry-Wood-Slices-Without-Cracking?amp=1. Hope those tips help and thank you for your questions!🎨🎄

Thanks so much Donna!! I can’t remember exactly the colors in the ornaments but here are some guesses to which colors I used ( also assuming you’re referring to the night sky ornament examples later on in the video). 1. The pink one ( Quinacridone Magenta with white in the gradient). 2.Yellow and blue one (Cadmium yellow medium and ultramarine blue with black at the top for a darker night sky). 3. Blue/turquoise ( teal/turquoise with ultramarine blue and black for the top of the sky) 4. Pale red ( cadmium red medium mixed with a lot of white) I think. Couldn’t remember this one, just guessing here. 5. Purple (dioxazine purple + magenta and white gradient at the horizon) Hope that helps!! Enjoy painting them 😊🎨🎄

Wood rounds are notorious for cracking unfortunately. Same this happened with mine I bought as a set. Some randomly cracked. Here’s a good article I’ve recommended to a few other commenters that might help prevent cracks( I haven’t personally tried the methods though). Hope that helps.

I just put a blank coat of sap green on the back of my ornaments. Would you put the gloss on the back too or just the front?

I sell ornaments and I wanted to know is the gesso better than regular white paint? Also I was at a show the other day and while I was there 7 of my ornaments randomly cracked that has never happened to me before. Maybe from the sun? I thought they all had plenty of time to dry because I had painted the background long before. I just get so disheartened when they crack because with all the detail work I do on them they usually at least take an hour and so 7 cracking is 7 hours of work. I am just trying to figure out the best way to prevent this. Also I used modge podge to seal the painting. Do you suggest the one you use over that? Could that have made it crack? Thank you in advance for the advice! ❤

@feelingnifty2 жыл бұрын
A few of mine did too. From what I read online the cause is likely because the woodslices are not completely dried and some crack as moisture evaporates. You could try to dry them fully before painting on them. Here’s an article with a few methods ( haven’t tried any of these personally though ). Gluck! www.wikihow.com/Dry-Wood-Slices-Without-Cracking

This is not really painting when much if the creation is done with pencil and such. At least there was tips on varnishing, that was helpful and oh, the sky painting part was good, just a bit let down with all the drawing.

Sorry to hear that. I can understand the disappointment when there are different tools being used in painting instead of just a simple paint and a brush. So rude of you to say your comment in the manner you did Heaven Creed, many artist (even big famous named ones) switch between tools when creating. Even many will use acrylic paint pens on such items. and still refer to it as painting. So just because the nib is felt, or plastic you'll say otherwise? Just like some will even trace a drawing onto it first itself. Jasmine took the time to show and explain everything for a nitty craft ideas for those people who are beginners too make easy painting and drawing ideas for a quick easy process, and then a person can develop their skills later with practice!
