I remember coming out of Shea after a Mets game that didn't get over until like 2am.. The "Car repair" shops were still open and busy painting cars :-) I also remember my boss telling me, if you were missing something like a mirror, or antena or whatever, you could give some $$ to kids on a bike, who'd ask you what you needed and they would go pedal around the Shea parking lot and surrounding area til the found a car that had the part.... ;p;

In the 1960s and 1970s that entire area ,including college point rd was nothing but car junk yards and scrap iron business, my farther use to take me and my brothers there on weekends to check it out. We called that place " junk yard city"

I used to take the Q-17 bus from 188th St and Union Turnpike to Main Street, where I would then hop on the elevated train and get off at the Willets Point Shea Stadium stop. From there I would walk to Shea. I also purchased a Suzuki TX-125 dirt bike from a place in Willets Point. I cannot remember if it was called either Stadium Cycles or Action Motors. This was in 1969 so we are really going back in time here. I went to the 1964 World’s Fair many times and also went ice skating at the ice skating rink right next door to the Unisphere. Memories...

Good place to park your car for free at a Mets game under the Whitestone Expressway. The thing is, will your car be there after the game? They've been trying to develop that area for years. Especially when Citi Field opened. Turn that area into like a Wrigleyville in Chicago or the area around Fenway in Boston. Been going to games my whole life, never would have thought anyone lived there, let alone a deli. Never ventured in too deep of that place. A lot of shops in the past I think offered services to fix your car while you watched the game.

Before COVID, if I were the City, I would try to talk to the Jets about coming back to New York and build a new stadium across from Citi Field in that area at Willets Point. It would be the perfect location for it. I remember the Islanders, before they settled on Belmont was going to build a new arena, right across from Citi field on the old Shea Stadium site.
