Issue to what you're describing is tied to frame rate being greater than ~90 It works fine at 60 at higher zones

It does have to be noted though, that those zones are doubled by the boosted frame rate.

There are unused voicelines from Wipeout 2048 (for its crossplay wipeout hd mode) that indicated there to have been "Transonic" (which would have been around Mach 1) and "Hypersonic" speed classes at one point, but those never came to be.
