Thank you for setting the record straight. I'm from Cincinnati and lived in Munich in my late 20s. I've attended Oktoberfest many times, trying desperately not to look like a tourist and only during my last visit to the Wiesn did I feel somewhat like a Münchener. Zinzinnati's festival is something of a joke. I mean, Sam Adams is the sponsor? Mentioning the food here would only be insulting. If you approach it as an excuse to people watch, then you can have a good time with it but it has little to nothing to do with Oktoberfest. **This Cincinnatian not only knows Robbie Williams "Angels", but also plays/sings on acoustic guitar.

Watching these videos actually is part of my healing, it helps me to indulge in my memories of my mom and my love of Germany. I watch all of your videos. They fondly remind me of the 3 years that I was stationed in nearby Augsburg. I went to Oktoberfest in 1978 and 1979. The military unit that I was a part of had a Lowenbrau vending machine in the lounge and we were the biggest consumer of Lowenbrau beer in Augsburg for that distributor. Bigger than any restaurant or pub. That status guaranteed us a reserved table in the Lowenbrau tent every year with a first free beer and a chicken to start us off. It was wonderful being able to walk around the area and have a place to come back to. What I also remember is that the price of beer at Oktoberfest was the the prevailing price of a beer at every other fest that followed until the next year's Oktoberfest.

I have been to Oktoberfest in Munich a few times, nothing around the world compares to it. I was really surprised to see carnival type rides at Wiesn. I cant wait to go back when my son turns 16,. Both time I went it was during the weekend where the Italians come to Munich for Oktoberfest, dont know if it has a name for it, but they would get on the tables and chug beer while singing in Italian. That was an awesome time. Both times I went to Oktoberfest, the band in the Löwenbräu and the Paulaner tent played the chicken dance and people got on the tables dancing to it. I went in 2007 and again in 2012. Maybe I just got lucky on those 2 years in 2 different tents. It was great hearing Country Roads and Sweet Caroline at the festival.

Still remember visiting myself a "little Octoberfest" in Levenworth, WA in August 1995. It's an Alps themed town with a German community and I loved it. There a professional dance group from Seattle performed the Holzhacker as well as some Schuhplattler dances amongst their own Linedances while wearing Dirndl and Lederhosen. They were performing really good so I congratulated them for their performance. When they noticed that I'm from Munich due to my accent they even invited me to join their after party. In North Dakota we don't really associate the chicken dance with Oktoberfest it's more of a reception wedding dance for the younger children to join the adults in the festivities. Also popular is the Hokey Pokey and the Butterfly and usually when the half shots of red-eye are going around with a beer Chaser the band or DJ is playing the little brown jug. It's a bit of the intermingling of the ethnic groups that settled North Dakota Wyoming Minnesota and South Dakota. Which are French, Scandinavian, German , polish, Ukrainian, the Baltic states where a lot of Germans from Russia emigrated to this area from. Also the Danes, Dutch , belgians , & British Isles. But the first settlers here are the Native Americans!! During World Youth Day in Denver Colorado a lot of Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries were interested in the words and choreography of these three main dances which they had our groups from Minot , Bismarck, and Dickinson perform for them, while they played the music and then they share their ethnic wedding Festival music with us.

Yepp, same here when I studied in Stuttgart. Oooh boy, that were some wild times. It was often called "Wasn" instead of "Wiesn" to differentiate it from the Oktoberfest Wiesn. But obviously, all the people who were non-native German speakers had massive problems distinguishing the two different sounds. So much so, that I had one group of people almost go to Munich instead, when I told them to come to the Wasn. Luckily I had my doubts when they asked me how much time they needed to get there so I could clarify that misunderstanding.
@T0MT0Mmmmy3 жыл бұрын
@@RustyDust101 it is not called "Wasn" to differentiate it from "Wiesn". It is called "Wasen" because in the local dialect of Stuttgart a lawn is called "Wasen" and the fairground/lawn it takes place is named "Cannstatter Wasen" (lawn of Cannstatt, Cannstatt is the city quarter) .

We had to squeeze by in between groups just standing around drinking and talking and good luck trying to find a seat in the tents. I loved and miss all the other festivals/beer in Bavaria though. Also had carnival rides like they do in the USA.On the first day the town has a parade and on the last night fireworks on the hill by the castle. Every time I hear the chicken dance, I tell the German wife "hey, it's the national song of Germany!"...she doesn't think I'm funny... Plus, she's so northern German she's practically Danish. But the way you describe Oktoberfest is like the Texas State Fair here. I mean, it's a big thing, especially around Dallas (where the Texas State Fair grounds are...it's an actual name of that part of the city, Fair Park), and when I was in school we had a day off that was called "Fair Day" (I think they still get it off, but it's just considered a regular teacher in-service day). But it's not a religious holiday that we go around wishing each other "Happy Texas State Fair!" Though there is a lot of similar drinking and fried food...

We lived about 20 miles from it, and there were several kids I knew whose families would go every year. One kid I knew was very excited one year, because his family was planning to travel to Munich to see the real thing. I believe that this was in 1972, right after the Munich Olympics. He had been to the Oktoberfest at Mount Angel many times since he was a little kid. When he came back from Germany, he was disappointed, because it wasn't like the "real Oktoberfest" in Mount Angel. I asked him if he understood that the "real" Oktoberfest was the one he went to in Germany, but he didn't want to talk about it any more.

So about the chicken dance, is it possible times have changed? In 1984 at the age of 18, I was traveling through Europe with my best friend via Eurail. I’m born Swiss but raised in the US. We went to Munich, which is one of my top 5 favorite cities in the world so I always stop by when I’m in Europe. One evening we landed at the Hofbrauhaus. While it wasn’t Oktoberfest, but rather the month of April, we did end up dancing to the polka band playing. In fact I was asked by a rather older lady, definitely someone’s grandmother to dance. And the song that started playing was in fact the chicken dance. So, Munich, famous beer hall, lots of beer, and the chicken dance. Either way it is one of my fondest memories. Getting back to my youth hostel that night, however, is a memory I do not have.

I've never been to Oktoberfest (not counting American knockoffs), but I did visit the Hofbräuhaus in Munich and that was very touristy to the point that it seemed as though the only Germans there were the staff. From that, I could see the perception that Oktoberfest is only for tourists. That same year I was at a Wiesn festival in Regensburg, which was a lot of fun. As college students short on money, we managed to make some money at the end of each night. As people cleared out of their tables, they would leave the 1 liter glasses behind and each one would have a Pfand "depost" of a couple of Euros. So as the tables cleared, we would go pick up the glass mugs and return them to collect the Pfand.

To be honest: I was once at the Oktoberfest: it was loud, full of drunks and expensive as hell. I don't have to go there again. I am from Hessen, Germany. But, each as he wants. It is definitely THE biggest festival in Germany. I have decided for myself that I prefer to hike on the Rheinsteig or in the Black Forest. I like your videos.

Busted! Re traditional clothes! I was there in 1988 and don’t remember much traditional clothing. Maybe it’s changed since then. Great memories! I hope you get to go again. Prost!! 🍻🥨🍻🥨

It definitely changed in the last 10 to 20 years! Now almost everyone is wearing traditonal clothes. Especially younger people.

I always supposed that Oktoberfest was a harvest festival, so you taught me something new. About twenty years ago, we were traveling in Bayern and it was Oktoberfestzeit, so we thought to go to München. We couldn't get a room within miles of the place, so we didn't go!

I actually got to go to Oktoberfest when I was in germany during the 80's. We took the train from Heilbronn to Munich. We spent the night at a hotel the night before. We were w/another couple. I also had a crigenetics dna test done & found out I am 36.2% German! Thanks Feli for the video! Danke! (Feli, you really have to go to Helen, Georgia. It is a german themed town right next to the stream. They have german restaurants there as well as souvenir shops too. There is a man that has a dulcimer he made himself that plays in town. It doesn't compare to germany, but it is pretty close!)

Again a great video. 👍 Some details on some this years Oktoberfest. The Wiesn is this year sadly again cancelled as you said, but there is some action still going on. Munich breweries presented special Oktoberfest beer editions, harnessed horse pull the brewery waggons (Brauereigespanne) through town and breweries and restaurants have some small events. For sure you cannot compare it to the normal Wiesn, but people make the best out of the current situation and cheer for next week return of the real event. 🙂

You once said that brown hair and eyes is very common among German people. I met a beautiful lady from Germany who also had brown hair and eyes. She would be probably close to the age of your parents. We talked for a couple of hours at a birthday party. I never saw her again but I don't think I will ever forget her.

I would think that Oktoberfest in the USA is similar to how St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by many Americans. It was transformed from what it was originally back in the “old” country to become more of a celebration of ethnic pride. Even Americans with no Irish ancestry have joined in & in many cases have even twisted it even more making it even more unrecognizable (even many Irish Americans are guilty of this, not knowing the original history or traditions). Also establishments here (& Ireland) that have catered to it (cashed in on it). The commercial aspects at least are similar to how non-Hispanic Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the USA (I think that most of them incorrectly believe that it is Mexican Independence Day like our Forth of July). So that is why many will conflate the Oktoberfests outside of Munich with the original (which you seemed confused by). Apparently the American appropriation of St. Patrick’s Day here has had an influence on how some do it in the “old” country.

I did think Oktoberfest was a harvest festival of some kind. And the different breweries sponsoring the tents I learned from a previous video. Germany and most of Europe have a much better attitude to alcohol than America. So have you ever done a video about German foods. And if not, That might make an interesting video. I’m suddenly very hungry.

Great video thanks for sharing! When I was there in 2017 I believe a few tents had dunkels. Is this common at the 14 larger tents? Vielen Dank!

I remember being told off and threatened with being thrown out of the Paulaner tent for standing on my table drinking Helles with my t- shirt off. They had no problem with me standing on the table, but they had a big problem with the lack of t- shirt. When I put the t-shirt back on, they were fine. I suspect it would have been the other way round back on the UK
