My childhood cat Lisa passed away at 20 a few weeks ago. She was the most gentle cat I’ve ever met. When my mom or I played with her, she always had her claws retracted so she wouldn’t scratch us. When I was a child she allowed me to put dolls clothing on her. She would also give soft little love bites, very careful so it wouldn’t hurt. I loved her so much and I miss her terribly.

Once just as I was quickly extending my arm to crack a stiff elbow, my cat jumped up and I accidentally hit her face. She immediately ran away. After using the restroom I went to the other room and found her and the look of distrust on her face was something I will never forget. But I apologized as best I could and gave her a treat. I think she understood it was an accident, because she stayed with me the rest of the night, and the next day she was loving as ever and it was like it never happened.

My fucking cat pounces on me in a deep sleep and I'm Paranoid cuz we got lots of burglaries... I have woken up started yelling kicking like a human was on top of me. I can't help it I have had window broken and I scared a man away, I feel bad but if something loud or effects me I get scare. I have to find my lil cat give her treats and make her feel comfortable, I feel bad but if something hops on my bed or she breaks something I wake up yelling and walk with a big weapon clearing the house. If she stopped doing that I wouldn't be so tripped out lo.... but she still sleeps next to me most of the time

1. Do not raise your voice or make sudden loud noises before cats as their hearing is extremely sensitive. They perceive the loud person/ thing as a threat. 2. Do not tease cats - like, pulling their tail or waking them when asleep. 3. Do not declaw 4. Do not indulge in rough play 5. No harsh discipline rather use positive reinforcement 6. Care about their needs like combing them regularly or cleaning their litter box 7. Respect their territory. 8. Do not frequently interrupt their sleep as it leads to stress. 9. Do not play pranks on a cat as they feel insecure. Do not dress up a cat 10. Do not force them to interact with new pets/persons/ environments. Give them time.

Declawing is a violent, invasive, painful, and unnecessary mutilation that involves 10 separate amputations-not just of cats' nails but of their joints as well. Its long-term effects include skin and bladder problems and the gradual weakening of cats' legs, shoulders, and back muscles. DONT DECLAW

I AGREE 100% Declawing a cat IS animal cruelty. As a "pet parent" that's had both dogs and cats, I would never have a cat declawed! It takes away their way of defending themselves against predators / enemies. Fortunately, the stat I live in has banned declawing cats. Praise God! The host of the show "My cat from hell" even stated declawing cats is cruel.

I dont know if this was wrong but a cat we had at our house, Princess, was a kind of left with us individual who was given the normal, for a pet in our family, the necessary care and was kind of given the freedom of the house and yard. She ingratiated herself with everyone and just fit in. I don't remember any problems with scratching or anything like that, maybe she "got it out of her system" outside but she had favorite areas where she would hang out all day it seemed. She was kind of like a harlequin around the house and was a pleasant surprise when she showed up. Never showed any aggression or violence and was a pleasant and affectionate visitor wherever she happened to be. Really a wonderful presence. At that time everybody was going indifferent directions except Mom who remarked that Princess would be around her during her daily business around the house and would particularly watch her in the kitchen from the garden wall while she did cleaning or preparing dinner. Princess was a wonderful being to be around. We all miss her.

Same here. I adopted my then 8 yr old Siamese-mix girl from a good shelter. Seeming bewildered at the loss of her previous family, she hid from me for only a couple of days but soon came out to her feeding station and litter box. When we connected, her behavior made me conclude that she had never been abused. Such a polite cat, she's never clawed any furniture or jumped up to the kitchen counter. She enjoys grooming sessions, toys, scratching stations and beds around the house, but prefers to sleep with me!

She's a good cat and I don't understand why no one brought her home. She sat in a cage for over a year. I'm so happy to save her from having to sit in a cage day in and day out watching people come and go wondering when someone will take her home. I saw her and I loved her at the first second. I had a Devon Rex years ago. His breeder repossessed a cat from a buyer because he had been declawed. 😢 She offered him to me for free because "he will live alone in an enclosure forever" unless she could find a good loving home for him. Of course, I took the cat. He was traumatized for life, and if anyone tried to touch his feet, he would recoil in fear or in pain. NEVER DECLAW A CAT!!!

I feel your pain, heartbreak and frustrating anguish!! We also inherited ( under duress) a declawed cat Casey beautiful black beauty. Because I already had 2 cats normal with claws. Casey was forced to spend his life in an enclosed room. We did our best to make him comfortable, bought him china dishes, water fountain, snacks, bedding, and we did our best to give him wuvies ❤. One of our other cat actually found a way to open his door . So we had to duct tape his door every time we went in to clean his box, bring him food, etc… I saw this precious cat suffer a lot. He walked different too !! We did our best to spend time with him as he was all alone . Eventually Casey developed cancer . His former owner feed him a diet of dry kibble. And sink water in spite of me providing water for them both before I aquired ownership. Casey withered away from a fluffy 22 lbs to a sad 9 lbs. he died in our arms on way to the vet. Very well put. Cats use mostly non verbal communication so I really try to learn to recognize what they are saying and respond. The better I get at this the closer we get. Remember that cats meowing to you may be similar to them using baby talk with you since you aren't understanding their nonverbal cues. The better we get at non verbal the less meowing is needed. Pay attention to the tip of their tail. I put my palm under it and let it tell me what's going on.

If you value your furniture above a cat, don't get a cat. Here in the UK declawing is (thankfully) illegal. I have 9 cats, 8 of them rescues. They have cat trees, scratching posts all over the house but some of them still prefer my sofa. That's OK. The sofa will wear out or I'll get fed up with it anyway. My cats are far more important. While I was watching the video Kira was on my lap, purring her head off and making biscuits. I got her at 8 months old as a foster. She had been horribly neglected by her uncaring, cruel owners who surrendered her because they were going to be visited by the RSPCA who'd visited them before and were following up the case. Poor Kira (the name I gave her) was grossly underweight, full of cat 'flu, fleas, worms and not spayed, also worrying was she had no strength in her back legs. We came to the conclusion she'd been confined in a very small space, like a cat carrier for long periods of time. She was terrified of us too and would hiss but never lash out when we passed her. We got her microchipped under anaesthetic. You've guessed it, we adopted her. The turning point came when I bought her a pretty pink polka dot collar, complete with bow on impulse. I showed it to her. I will never forget how she looked up into my face with an expression that said "That's for me?" and put her head forward to I could put it on. I have a beautiful photograph of her sitting so proud. She's a black cat with the most gorgeous green eyes. She's super friendly and loving and I feel blessed to have her. Our latest rescue we are still working on. He was an unneutered Tom who our neighbour was feeding until he moved away. We took over feeding and eventually caught our boy, had his health issues sorted by our vet, had him neutered and chipped and he too became part of our family. He is coming round in his own time, is learning to play but still hides when we have visitors until he decides they're not a threat. Our vet said he was very young, no more than 3 years old. I dread to think what would have happened to him if we hadn't caught him. He's also a stunningly beautiful black cat. He's usually to be found at night sleeping on the spare pillow above my head with a look of contentment and that makes me smile. All our cats, ages ranging from 19 years old to 4 years old are indoor cats. They are all so precious.

I've only had my little Athena Bear for two weeks after the mysterious "cat distribution system" dropped her off. I'm not a cat person and know very little about keeping one. Despite that, it seems I accidentally became the perfect cat owner! She follows me everywhere, sits on my feet on the sofa, sleeps by my head in bed, and curls up by my feet when I'm working. I made her a little house from a box and a blanket behind the sofa for her alone time, but lately, she prefers spending all her time right next to me. I tell them I'm going to the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, outside or desk-chair & they learn what it means. It's just teaching them what your're doing, so they'll know. There was a real scared feral cat, after a few years she learned - that when I said I'm at my desk-chair - she would come in from outside to eat. She sees me at my desk-chair, I turn my head & look at her - she's not running out the door. When I'm going to make a noise, like the can opener - I say: make noise & they know it's coming.

THINKING of Buying or Keeping a Cat? Before anyone keeps a cat they really need to understand the animals psychological makeup. They need to respect the cat's individual and unique characteristics. They need to spend time developing a bond and earning trust. A cat is not a baby human or a cuddly toy, it is a small predator, a beautiful and majestic creature with tremendous abilities and almost supernatural powers. To keep a cat is not to own it, but to care for it and to insure that it's specific needs are met. You will find that if the cat that you have chosen, choses you, you will have a friend and a companion for it's whole sensitive life!

I remember when I was like…. 10 or so maybe in 1995, my mother had a cat with a lot of very aggressive/difficult scratching behavior. I think my mom had actually made the appointment for declawing, because I remember seeing it on the calendar. But someone talked her out of it and must have told her what declawing actually was and what it actually entailed, because she never actually went through with it and that cat never did get declawed, thank god! It’s actually a really sort of horrifying memory for me to think about, how close we came to mutilating that poor kitty. It’s absolutely horrific that it’s even considered a veterinary procedure in the first place and not simply considered illegal animal abuse.

I had an abused and neglected cat that I rehabilitated, took about 4 to 6 months for him to fully realize he was going to be safe. When he had nightmares, it was clear he was afraid by the twitching and jerking motions in his sleep, and I learned never to touch him in that state (extremely startling for him, and he would hiss at me while coming to consciousness, and then suddenly realized it was just me and get embarrassed, jump up, sit with his back to me, and feel shame until I said it was okay, that I loved him, and then he knew all was well and would come over purring for petting). So when he had nightmares the next time, I started to just gently speak to him in his sleep, no touch, and he would calm down and usually wake up for just a moment, stretch, yawn, and fall asleep peacefully (again purring). He was the best bravest dearest friend ❤️

I figured since it's all about scent, like dogs, it was worth a go.It has been a huge sucess, and just let them approach me, or not, without any sounds of movement. Now if they see me, they will run across the lawn and over to me. I'm new to experiencing positive time with a cat, as I was scratched as a child and have avoided them. They hate it and stop whatever they are doing, instead of ending up hurting each other. Now, when their behavior is unwanted, I have only to show them the bottle and they stop and leave the area. Otherwise, they have full run of the house and are well-adjusted. I live alone and they are not bothered day or night. I let them outside on an enclosed patio to give them some variety. I had adopted a young cat and a couple of months later, I decided to adopt another one for company. This new cat was a little kitten 3 months old. I introduced the 2 very gradually but it didn't work out very well at all. In fact the first adopted cat was very agressive towards the kitten and I was very unsure whether I could keep the poor little kitten. I called the lady of the Animal Protection Society from whom I had adopted both cats to find a solution. She solved the problem very easily : catch the urine from the older cat and rub it over the body of the new cat. That worked perfectly - the older cat recognised the kitten as part of his family and peace came back between the two. If you are having the same problem, try this !!!!

I think you can overdo this list of yes and no stuff. Declawing is obviously horrible. But I've had over 27 cats in my life, and have had up to 10 at a time. I now have 6. From time to time I squirt or swat them, though usually because one of them is picking on another. And I yell. Often. They look at me like, "who died and made you king?" and mostly ignore me. Sometimes I roar and act like a monster trying to get them. They run, but not very fast or very far, and it is more like a game. And each one demands attention in one way or another, from jumping on my lap to sleeping on the bed or yowling for attention. All will eventually come to me with their tail up if I call their name enough.

Still, I don't pick them up. They do not like that. I don't normally hug or hold them. And it is important to get them used to touching their feet when they are kittens. I gently hold on their tails, but not so tightly they can't easily pull them free. They don't mind that. All of mine let me pet their bellies and don't react aggressively. And there is no hard play. If something makes them panic and use teeth and claws, I holler. They look at me like, "oh, what did I do?" and let go. Never respond to that with force.

All these lines of reasoning where people say A or B isn't that bad because cats still come up to me or they don't run away only go to show how devoid of logic some people are. Cats have a need for (human) touch, so even when you do horrible things to them they might still come to you. Secondly, if a cat experiences stress, it might just choose one of three (in)actions: fight, flight or freeze. The fact that a cat (or any animal) stays where it is, is not an indication it does not suffer. And thirdly and most importantly, cats have NO CHOICE but to stay with their owners, even if they are treated badly. So they might tolerate bad treatment, but when given a choice, they might prefer better conditions.

Declawing is very painful and it’s banned in the UK We have trimmers that have a little hole in them and it stops cutting to close .

Great video! I take care of feral cats, and when the gardeners come, they take off for the day. "They return at night as if nothing has happened."

Thanks so much! 😊 Feral cats are such resilient creatures. It’s amazing how they adapt and return as if nothing's happened after a day away. You're doing wonderful work caring for them! 🐱💖

That snake instinct is a strong one. One day I had a green necktie on my bed and one of my cats jumped onto the bed, glimpsed the necktie and jumped four feet into the air in panic.

A friend of mine suggested having our scratching kitty declawed. I strongly objected. He said we had our cat declawed and he got used to it. What? You mean like a person losing a limb gets used to it? "Getting used to it" is having to live with the damage done. Still legal in the US... unbelievable!

You're absolutely right-declawing is a harsh and painful procedure. 😿 "Getting used to it" is not a justification for causing such harm. It's incredible that it's still legal in some places. Thank you for standing up for your kitty and advocating for humane treatment. 🐾❤️

1) Raised voices; Loud noises. 2) Teasing 3) Declawing 4) Rough playing 5) Harsh discipline (yelling, hitting, rubbing nose in accident, etc) 6) Skipping small things (cleaning their cat box, etc) 7) Moving their cat bed, litter box, furniture, etc. 8) Regularly interupting their sleep (causes stress) 9) Laughing at the cat's expense / pranks / costumes 10) Forcing new interactions / new pets or people

Be kind to animals. Be kind to each other. Declawing should be illegal everywhere as should ear and all mutilation, too. #adoptrescuefoster #dontshop #spayneuter #greederssuck

Declawing is so wrong. Even nail clipping can have its downsides as cats use their claws to climb and grip things, so it'd make it harder for them to stay on surfaces such as leather couches. We clip our cat's claws, so I've seen the results first-hand. However, it's a last resort as she's an old cat and gets her claws stuck in the rug (which is very stressful for her especially when no one is home to help her get out, which thankfully didn't happen very often before we started clipping). She doesn't go outside much anymore (when she does she just stays on the porch) so she doesn't need her claws to climb climb the fences or possibly defend herself.
