I avoid the phrase “simplest explanation” in favor of “explanation with fewest assumptions”, because “god did it” seems to be the simplest assumption (edit- simplest explanation) to the superficial observer, whereas the god hypothesis is full of assumptions and doesn’t explain anything. (Replies aren’t necessarily explanations. Explanations build on what we know.)

I didn’t hear anything to cause me to doubt that God exists. At the end of the day it’s a choice. I believe the testimony of the authors of the Bible Felipe Leon doesn’t. Eventually we will be standing before God and we will see who was right

Jesus as a failed apocalyptic messiah is a pretty powerful reason to doubt Christianity, which Felipe only summarized as part of his story. I invite you to watch, "The Sketchy Story of Jesus" here on KZbin. Not only are our sources rather dubious, but Christianity is actually very hard to reconcile with Judaism from a purely theological standpoint.

@@Venaloid there are several prophecies that could have only been fulfilled in the far future to claim that Jesus was a failed apocalyptic messiah. For example Rev 9:16 I heard the size of their army, which was 200 million mounted troops. The population was about 200 million in the world at that time so no! Also, to everyone that dies in less than 120 years, the time is near and that's what's important. If you die today you will not see the rapture or tribulation period but you will wish you were ready to meet your Creator. Mat 24:44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Luk 12:40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Do you think belief is a choice?

@ - If you actually read the Gospels and Paul's letters, you'll notice (as Felipe mentioned) that they are equally urgent about the end times; you are not unique in thinking this. Paul himself clearly believed that the resurrection of Jesus was the first of the many that were expected at the start of the apocalypse. Jesus reportedly said that this generation shall not pass away until all these things have happened. And yet, these things didn't happen: we are all still here, the Earth has not been reborn into the Kingdom of God. Once Jesus's followers realized this, the well-known cognitive bias called the "backfire effect" spurred some of them to hold even more strongly to their beliefs, concluding that the end of the world and the Kingdom of God weren't physical, they were instead spiritual. This is exactly what we see when someone in the modern era predicts the end of the world and is wrong: Harold Camping's 2012 "end of the world" prediction didn't come true, so he pivoted to saying that it had been a "spiritual judgement day". Jehovah's Witnesses famously predicted the end of the world in 1914, and when it didn't happen, they pivoted to saying that 1914 was the *beginning* of the end. The "New Covenant" of Christianity has every appearance of being yet another failed apocalyptic prophecy: the Kingdom of God is, um, within you, not on Earth. The fires of God's judgement are, um, spiritual, not physical. The resurrection of the dead to live with God is, um, really more of an afterlife, not a physical event. And I'm sorry, but, your "prophecy" is that the author of Revelation correctly estimated the world population? Are you being serious? Even if this were true, what does that have to do with Jesus?
