Even at loss, Felix still performed well. In the first 4 games, he won the majority of highlight rallies which very few players would be to do against the most consistent rally performer in Ma Long. The experience against the goat would help Felix tremendously in his future growth. Felix won many big shots but lost many touchy transitional shots like short push and Ma Long's slow paced backhand loop. He'll learn from these mistakes. To be frank, Felix has the complete package for a penholder player. After Wang Hao, none of the modern Chinese RPB penholder players can match Felix's skill level. So ironic that the best penholder prospect is now from Europe.

cuz Ma is 36 years old so he would like to finish it quickly. Even that, watch 7:15 bh to bh, Felix doesn't have any advantage and Ma is not even the best bh player.

Perhaps, but Ma is one of the only players in the world who can go BH to BH with Fan Zhendong and come out on top. So this isn't a surprise.

Lebrun’s backhand has to count against Ma’s weaker backhand, but it somehow didn’t pan out that way. I thought that’s the way Lebrun can pin Ma. However, Ma still steps around beautifully to use his forehand. And Ma’s backhand is clearly good enough in this game. Ma is a bit slower to the forehand corner than he used to be, that helped Lebrun win some longer rallies. Overall, Ma was in control. Still, it’s admirable that Lebrun theoretically had a chance.

Match très serré, ma long a été décisif avec sa rapidité et sa puissance sur les point important, mais match équilibré ou il a manqué d'expérience a Félix , mais gros match sérieux de Félix a ce niveau et pour son âge face a ce joueur de légende , tout les feux sont aux vert , Félix le bonhomme !

Felix Lebrun is reminding me a lot of Wang Hao with his backhand more decisive than his forhand. I believe that Ma Long used the strategy when playing against Fan Zhendong, to force the forhand.

don't let Wang Hao's powerful RPB blind you. His forehand is The Most powerful forehand in the entire CNT up until now, more powerful than Wang liqin, Xu Xin, Ma Long, Fan Zhendong, etc. ,said so by Fang Bo, another national medalist with super powerful forehand.

@@whatup2003 Simply not true just looking at his Olympic final against South Korea player Ryu. His forehand was a weak spot killed repeatedly by Ryu. Wang may have a powerful forehand but he needed to have time to set up and his backhand oriented style won't let him set up naturally. To most players, Wang Hao was known for his backhand and Ryu, Xu Xin and Wang liqin and to a large degree Ma Long all know for their forehand.

Wang hao strengt was His Control and Placements. Thats the reason Ma Long lost so many Times. Because Ma Long couldnt Break it easy. In His Prime he was very stabile and consistent Player.

Wang Hao was consistent on both the right and left side. Only in the last years of his dominance he used his backhand more and as we see now thats the trend that he set for nowadays

Compared to their last match at the Star Contender in Lanzhou, this one wasn't even a real match. More like a one-sided display by the goat, who seems also to be in a pretty good shape. It's a pity WCQ lost to LYJ (not for Lin, obviously, he deserved), it would have been a very interesting game between him and Ma Long in the latter's current form.

Felix was visibly nervous in the first game, and made a lot of unforced errors in backhand

i love all the experts in the comments but forget to actually watch the match. Felix won most of the rallies(better faster footwork). the area where Felix lost most of his points are service returns and short game. basically reading spin because he was on 95% of the balls. high returns = murdered. push to push short balls action = bottom net. i think Felix should try to introduce more flicks to avoid the push to push action. we can see that he nailed one at some point and he should work on that because Ma didn't expect him to nail this one. so attacks on 1st ball with flicks and maybe try to play with some sidespin action to push Ma wide enough to nail a winner passing shot right after.

The "edge" is not because of his rubber, it's because of his stability and ability to read the pace / tempo of the point. When opponent is aggressing, he can put the ball back on the table with various speed / spin / depth. When opponent becomes unsure and plays slow, Ma Long is ready to add the extra 10 or 20% power and change the timing so that the opponent is not ready. That is the beauty of Ma Long, he is not a pure power player like some of his teammates, his control of the point is the real masterclass.

@@CalvinAytch you are right, aside his skill, he also needs an equipment to enable him execute his game plan. I play andro hexer on my backhand of my viscaria blade and i find it to be the best backhand rubber i have ever used, because of the control it offers me
