In this video i show you how i open the hex hole on the front handle of a Victorinox RangerGrip. After the modification i make tests with every layer who helps to support the force of the hex shank under load. With this tests i can give you a feeling how much force the improviced bit driver of the RangerGrip 79 can absorbe. At the end i show you a simple trick how you can improve the stability of this bit driver system.

I love how in every video you explain safety issues that could occur when people try to imitate your modifications, teach how to correct them, and reveal the drawbacks of making such alterations. You really SHOULD be a spokesperson for Victorinox at this point.

Felix, I did this hack to my Ranger back when you first demonstrated it. I felt like I knew what you were going to reveal as the "secret" at the end of the video, because I discovered that problem with the chamfer myself. I use auger bits and spade bits as well as all the various Torx, Allen, and screwdriver bits, and as a result, I've found that many of the bits that have the locking grove cut into their shaft don't get much support. That under-cut in the shaft will line up with one of the support layers and that layer won't grip the hex shaft and you lose strength. The best solution that I came up with was to modify a small bit holder by cutting the shaft off and leaving just enough of it to reach all the way down through to the saw spring layer. I made the end very flat as you recommended in this video and I got rid of the under-cut by cutting it off. It does require carrying one more piece of kit, but it also gives you maximum strength with any bit. BTW, have you ever used auger bits instead of the spade bits? I feel like they take less effort. Thanks for making my Friday better, once again! Ciao!

Flatten the chamfer ... GREAT TRICK! I watched this video even though I have already made this mod to my Ranger Grip 57. Boy am I glad I did!! After making the mod, I noticed, like you show, that the bit does not go *through* the liner lock layer because of the tiny protrusion of the saw spring. I also noticed that the bit wiggles a little, but I thought it was at least going *into* the liner lock layer. Now I realize that, because of the chamfer, it does not. Wow!! I can't wait to flatten the chamfer and have a much more robust tool. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Greetings Mr. Immler. I posted a video on this three months ago with a very easy way to open the hexagonal hole. It really takes only about 15 - 20 seconds and comes out very clean without any drilling or any filing. I made another video - basically a sequel - comparing the depths that each of three RangerGrips allow a bit to set in the handle of the knife. The Boatsman comes with the bit driver exposed. The RangerGrip 71 Gardner has the same amount of metal supporting the bit when the hole on the scale is opened. The RangerGrip 79 does not allow the bit to set as deep and has less metal supporting it. Basically, they all will work with a variety of bits as long as we don't over-torque them. I like to use mine with regular drill bits when the reamer is not adequate to get the exact size hole that I want. I only do light drill applications and don't really recommend any heavy-duty type work. Cheers. How I do my bit driver mod kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIOupKGln9-Fiac Depth comparison kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnnTlHaeba2rqdk

Calculating the torque value of the combined thicknesses of the liners is intelligent. Removing the chamfer is also a smart idea. There are small sockets which use a 1/4 inch driver and I imagine that the 1/4 inch shank from a drill could be used as a socket driver . Bicycle tool etc. ?? Thanks once again for another intriguing engineering tutorial and all the best sent your way Felix.

I have a small set of 8 wood drill bits (up to 1/4 inch) designed for fast interchange with a hex bit driver in an electric drill. Right at the point ! Very important to know, where the weak points are and eliminate them as much as possible. I'd go even a step further: all long tools like bit-holders, drills etc come with a groove near the end. It's ment as a breaking point when used with a power drill. When used with a hand tool, it's useless, so I'd cut it off (reduces lenght and weight too). With a very crisp 90° edge it may get fiddly to insert it, so I'd do a very small chamfer, but to get the full advantage of the 1,2mm layer, I'd open the saw, so the next layer (#5) will be the stop. Stay safe and enjoy Xmas time

And... 7 months after this video was published, the Victorinox Venture was released. It's interesting to see the correlation between these videos and the design of the venture. I appreciate the influence you have on Victorinox! I like the Ranger Grip knives, but I think they have two flaws. First, the only blade can't (and isn't) be sharpened closer to the pivot due to how the blade stop is designed. And second, there is no small blade similar to what the 91mm versions have. Because of this, I have to put more force into my cuts because the cutting edge is farther away from the handle. This modification makes this tool more useful, but the blade is annoying. Thank Felix for another great video!

Hi Felix, love your videos. The thumbnail reminded me of a mod/ adaptation I made. The hex bit holder from lidl reminded me of it. If you ever see the mixed washer sets in lidl the smallest split locking washer makes a great replacement ring for any swiss army knife. I have damaged a few standard split rings over the last few years. The smallest locking washer in the lidl set has a nice spring tension without being brittle. You can open it with 2 pliers to fit it to the knife and then the cut in it is ideal for creating a near seamless joint when you correct/ straighten the washer after fitting. It has enough spring to reset itself after being shock loaded without the joint opening and releasing the knife. Also the thickness of the wire (square profile) in the washer washer is a very good match to the hole in the frame piece.

Meant to add that the split ring on the ranger grip in your thumbnail was damaged which also reminded me of the fix as well as the hex bit holder.

Passt sofort ohne Nacharbeit. Liebe Grüße Thomas

Mr Felix, thanks for the brilliant demonstration of finding the secret hole and the explanation of why 3 layers of the ranger grip 55, 79, onyx and wood, I found that you can use the Leatherman Raquet and bit extender are better to use and because you have to points of the hex hole you can have 3 layers complete and you can have only a small hole and a stablel bit tool, do you know if the wood scales also have the precut hole, thanks I enjoy your videos, thanks

Hello Mr. Immler, I finally subscribed to you after watching many of your videos. Thank you for all the tips and tricks. I have an idea for creating the ultimate 130mm tool by combining: Pliers, Marlin Spike, and one-handed Serrated Blade from a V. Boatsman Scissors and Wood Saw of a V. Gardener Scales with tweezer and toothpick (with hex mod), Gutting Blade, and one handed Plain Blade from a V. Hunter 58 Metal File from a Wenger Ranger 70. Locking Screwdriver and Bottle Opener from any Rangergrip Back Tools: corkscrew, reamer or awl, and Phillips screwdriver I have all of these knives already, and I keep looking at them, trying to figure out if such a combination for this monster is possible.

Hi Felix, great video! I think I will `frankenstein´my Ranger aswelll :D Your spat bits look super nice, especially that they have the little screw tip seems to be very helpful since they will pull themselves in the wood. What kind of drills do you use?

Dear Felix and everybody else, there is a really easy way to do the mod. You can do this mod just using one tool. With the Reamer you can easily drill a hole in the middle of the hex inlay and carve out along the edges, regularly trimming the rubber on the front with the small blade of a SAK. mine took less than 5 minutes
