Tough call on that greatest play but if you pause it at 1:26, you can clearly see him out. It's always tough to call those big effort plays back.. Big momentum shift.

the contact before the massive layout is a foul, it sucks but its a foul and it did affect the US player's ability to make his own bid

Superior tactics from Belgium, just another level of ability from the US. That game was lost before it began.

if it's a travel and it didn't affect the play, then the player should be able to execute without traveling. all travels affect play whether you like it or not.

5:06 you can see there is a contact on the feet before taking of. Nontheless its a question wether it affected the chance for the US athlete to get a play on the disc.

You’re right, there was contact before takeoff. You’re wrong, though, regarding it mattering whether the trip affected the receiver’s ability for playing the disc. A trip is a foul, period. Receiver is within his rights for calling it, even after seeing the outcome of the throw.

@@codytapscott9191wait why doesn't matter it if does or doesn't affect play? If anyone else was fouled away from that their during the time the disc is in the air and it's a clean block you don't get the same resolution. Contact before a block needs to affect play but it's hard to argue that a defender can be in a position to both foul someone and get a clean block because then that player is necessarily very close to the disc and might have a chance...

@@Gameboob If a defender trips a receiver leading up to an attempt on the disc, that defender can say he got the disc first until the cows come home. The moment the foul happens, determining whether the defender would’ve made a clean block is impossible. That’s why I said it the defender claiming he got to the disc first doesn’t matter. He can say he would’ve made a clean block, yet the receiver can claim otherwise and neither is definitely wrong. The defender’s trip prevented that scenario playing out.

Why? Because the receiver called a legitimate foul five minutes into the video, as the commentator referred to the defender admitting that he made contact that tripped the receiver?
@tasmanmillen
@tasmanmillen Жыл бұрын
The contact didn’t really affect the play though, the USA player wasn’t going to prevent the block even if he wasn’t tripped.

@@tasmanmillen Neither of us know the receiver wouldn’t’ve gotten to the disc if he wasn’t tripped, since he was. Doesn’t matter. The defender took a risk undercutting that swing. It’s *his* responsibility to not come through the receiver’s back-or his legs-while making his bid. Don’t have to like it, but that’s the rule.

@@tasmanmillen so when you trip a guy preventing him from catching a disc thats a reasonable distance away.. thats a good call all the time.. regardless if you think the d can get the interception or not.. Ultimate rules (and most sports rules) favour the offence.. Note we did see the USA player get thrown off stride due to the contact. pretty much theres no dispute there..
@TheUltimateFrisbee

@@tasmanmillen it absolutely could have mattered, we don't know because he got fouled. Sickles might have been able to seal the Belgium defender who was trying to come under him. Foul calls happen when there is a denial of opportunity through illegal actions.

@@1337pino You can-it doesn’t matter, though. Once contact happens-particularly if it affects the receiver’s ability to play the disc-the defender should expect a foul call. Moreso here, since not calling the foul disadvantages the offense.

if you get tripped while making a play for the disc, obviously that affects the outcome

By US college standards, it's a very good call in that it prevents a short field turnover (especially by WFDF rules), and whether it's legitimate has absolutely no bearing on its quality. 9 times out of 10 an observer would overrule that call.
