@User_not_found_4032 жыл бұрын
@@FellowFilmmaker Yep, I've got the Godox SL60W and more recently the Amaran 60D. I was doing the ceiling bounce thing but found a cool 7" Bowens mount reflector which includes a shower cap diffuser and honeycombs you can insert into the reflector to control the light better since I had no room for a soft box. works great!

Awesome video, I learnt so much on how to use a singular light. One of the biggest struggles I've had with lighting, is lighting a room and a subject with just one light. I use a lantern modifier to accomplish this which works quite well. Could we maybe get a solution on creative ways to mount multiple lights using one stand? Working in a tiny kitchen, and not being able to hang things from the ceiling, I can only have one stand without tripping over myself. Would be great to see a compact multi light setup.
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
I would certainly consider that kind of video. Tho I know videos like it exist (Caleb Pike being a big contributor on this topic). I'd say off the top my head for an easy solution that even I do is to use Varipoles from Impact. You can rig them horizontally or vertically and rig quite a few pieces of gear to it. I use three of them in my office currently.

I always try to keep it simple - we all do pretty well in nature with 1 (very bright!) light source during the day! My one comment is that the backlighting with a soft frontal bounce fill is definitely the most sophisticated/cinematic look - so for drama this would usually be a go-to setup...

hi this channel just keep getting better and better! Would love to hear your thoughts on the best portable light that can be used/powered outdoors by batteries. We are after something that has enough power for outdoor remote interviews. not super worried about price
@FellowFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the idea! I'll have to look into making that kind of video. But in short, you'll want a powerful enough light, so likely 300w or higher. You'll need big v-mount batteries as well.

This was very helpful just to understand the different approaches I can use with a single light. I'm in the process of researching lights so I'm not limited to window lighting anymore. Ive been looking casually at the GVM 80 and maybe the aperature amaran 100. I see that you have a video right on the end screen for the godox vs amaran so I will certainly check that out and see if you have a video on the GVM vs amaran.

Another great video in the box :) Really loved the phonecam vs dedicated cam at the end - lots of creators talk about using what you have, without showing what those results might look like, which makes it impossible to easily understand what is and isn’t achievable with a phonecam and set a certain level of what to expect - I’ve been testing and testing different light setups with my iPhone X, and constantly hit that «am I doing something wrong, do I need better lights or did I hit the limit for what I can achieve with my phonecam» - and seeing your comparisons for these examples I quite easily see that getting more/better lights is probably not gonna help and getting a better / dedicated camera will definitely help - So thanks for a really solid overview of what’s possible, and please keep doing the pro cam vs phone cam comparisons when there is time and it’s relevant, it really helps to understand the possibilites and limitations for pushing existing gear before upgrading, and peace of mind when it comes to the «is it me or the gear» situation :)
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
So happy to hear that segment was helpful! I do agree, there is a point when existing gear will need to be upgraded for sure. Hoping to have more comparative content like this on the channel, so stay tuned😁

what is the lowest iso setting possible with this one light?
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
Well that would really depend on the camera, because each one works with light differently. So, for mine, I could push it to it's lowest iso with the light at a higher power (or highest I suppose) in a controlled setting
@paulhughes75862 жыл бұрын
Hey Heather, I am inquiring about an outdoor portable light to fill in-I have the LitraPro which is not strong enough to use from a great enough distance. I was looking at the Godox ML 60Bi but it doesn’t look strong enough (I have the SL150 and I love it). So what would you recommend, that can be at least a few feet away from the subject, possibly handheld like the ML 60Bi? Thank you.
@paulhughes75862 жыл бұрын
Whoops-I mean UL150.
@paulhughes75862 жыл бұрын
Any thoughts on this?
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
Well for a decent distance I'd say you need brighter than a 60w light. For handheld? I've not seen any other light that is handheld friendly above 60 watts. Now if you want silent, then the UL150 is great. If you want bright and mostly quiet and affordable then an Amaran 200d would be fine.

Noted! I'll see what I can do. :D Do you have a budget range or size in mind for portability?
@persvanstrom2 жыл бұрын
Amazing video and super helpfull . How far and how high from the subject would you say I should place a 90cm softbox for a rembrant look? I find it hard to get a soft and nice looking image, especially as I'm getting old and got bags under my eyes :D
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
Older folks or people with bags under the eyes are a little tricky. I'd not raise the light too high, because it will deepen the bags. Keep it a bit lower and less angled downward, not quite a beauty look, but something less dramatic for sure. So maybe 1-2 feet above their head and less angling down. Or you could do a really nice wrap around with a shower curtain and whatever light you have, instead of the parabolic softbox, as the more diffusion wrapping around the less the bags will show. :D

Curious if you adjusted the brightness of the lights for the iPhone takes. I know the different in dynamic range is pretty significant between the Canon and the iPhone (and there's no way around that), but it really struck me how crushed the highlights looked on the iPhone footage. Though, what I've noticed in shooting on my own phone (Pixel3) is that everything will look great on the screen, but even recording with something like FilmicPro, the footage in Premiere just looks crushed to all hell. I imagine that's a huge benefit of multiple lights-even on small budget-is that you can bring the background and subject just the little bit closer together, in terms of brightness, if you're limited to something like an iPhone or older DSLR.
@FellowFilmmaker2 жыл бұрын
So, I did not adjust the lights for the shots between phone and camera. I used the Moment app to try and have control over the camera settings on the phone, but it still tried doing it's own thing I think. I may have missed a setting or two, but in general the cameras AI seems to be trying hard to compensate. Gotta play more with the app and phone to get it closer, but in general I think that would be one of the main benefits to DSLR shooting is the better dynamic range and control.

As a working video pro I can share that Tube lights make a TERRIBLE key light and shouldn't even be recommended. If the only light you have is a Tube Light, then using it with the Bounce Method [into a white card, reflector, or even off a wall] will give a MUCH better result - and be less bothersome for your subject.
