I am a woman from Germany, 47 years old, and I‘ve always admired Russian women. Oh well, not quite. When I was a teenager, I traveled to Russia for the first time, and at that time I preferred a very casual look. No makeup, no nail polish, no neat clothes, no high heels. My Russian friends would not understand. When I visited them at home, they would make me take off my clothes, so they could iron them, or offer me to use their lip stick, or they would make my hair. Later in life, I understood. They wanted me to go on the street like „the prettiest version of myself“, as if I was going out for a date. I didn’t quite understand it back then, but now I do. When you dress up, even if it’s just making your hair or apply some mascara, you usually feel more confident.

Totally relatable. As a teen, I never cared for my appearance. My best friends did and they told me why they did so (i.e. to look presentable and clean, to look their best, to look put together, etc.) but it never fully registered to me. Until recently anyways, I realized that it’s a simple way of pampering ourselves and showing some self-love. We don’t have to dress up for others, we just have to dress up for ourselves. ‘Cause you’re right-you start *your day off feeling good, and you’re giving yourself a confidence boost. 💕 Edit: *

I'm German too, living in Spain where women take much more care about their appearance. So I do, but not with tons of make up or high heels. I'm always shocked when I see German women, many of them are not taking care at all. Those Russian women look all amazing!!! The woman who sad that she is "plumpy" looked very pretty and natural and I was happy to hear that she gave herself a 10

I am russian and this is not the usual standards. When you go to the grocery store you will find women all dressed up and wearing makeup there. You will find it everywhere so no we don't really admire natural beauty as much as people are led to believe. If you are born beautiful then you have privilege and should not tell others they can't try to look better. You already don't have to worry about it. There is nothing wrong with changing yourself to feel better such as makeup, hair, plastic surgery, exercise

I laughed when she said "natural beauty". I have a friend that is from Russia and people would come up to her to tell her that she is ugly. That happened often. It was only bearable when she wore makeup and hair done, dressed really nicely. That changed after she came to Portugal but she still talk about that toxic mindset there.

I am a Chinese living in USA. I have two comments on your video. First, I really appreciate that you have filmed ordinary Russian girls, they are far from the stereotype of Russian girls in my mind. I admit that the my stereotype comes from Russian movies, I do prefer some Russian movies over those Hollywood garbage. Plus I love Tchaikovsky, rimsky korsakov, Rachmaninoff, Borodin etc. Second, I saw you are comparing the beauty type from different part of the world. I do not have knowledge on the other part of the world, but I do know China. You were presenting the binding feet of Chinese women, at the same time, presenting the modern Russian girls. I think that is not fare to Chinese women. You may not know that the beauty of the binding feet started in China around Song Dynasty (960-1279), the feet binding custom was banned in China in 1912. I would say your comparison distorted the 'beauty' of Chinese women greatly.

Because they don’t know much about Chinese though they share borders and there’re some Chinese in Russia. I mean China was a closed country and was very isolated till quite recently historically speaking. It’s still quite isolated and very totalitarian communist country. There’re actually many ethnicities in Russia as it’s a big country. She only interviewed white girls as well, which is not really a representative of what Russia is. Maybe in Moscow but there are a quite few different ethnicities even in Moscow it’s a big city. Yet I only see white women here. How strange…

And I agree that bound feet in China or ultra thin waist in Europe should be mentioned only as things in the past. As for the white skin, it is very much alive. For example freckles are regarded as blemishes. Which is strange, because freckles look so nice. But well, each country has their own standards.

Very, very good and insightful to see and hear how Russian women view themselves in regard to beauty. I think American women could really benefit from watching this video. After watching this, it seems like Russian women have a healthy image of themselves compared to what I see in the US media (TV, movies, magazines, KZbin). And I am REALLY impressed with how articulate, interesting, outspoken, intelligent, confident, and knowledgeable these women are. And they are all so pretty. I'm a 67 year old male in California.

Yes, good genes are definitely a big part of it, but another part is that Europeans have more nutritious food than what we have in America. They don't need to eat nearly as much to get the same amount of nutrition. That's why almost everyone was fit here in America during the 50's and 60's, even though they ate a lot of sweets and smoked cigarettes. If we had more nutritious food and thus ate less, our people would look pretty similar health-wise. I would think eating healthier would be a bipartisan agenda here in America, but honestly, neither side seems to care that we have an obesity issue in America (In fact, everyone knows American politics are a mess right now). There are a few people on the right who want to bring back healthier food (Via different farming methods) and outdoor activity to help usher in a more healthy America physically, but it's definitely not a mainstream talking point from either side.

@@CaesarGB Can't agree more. I think the problem is it's so ingrained in our culture/food that even when we're educated on this, it's really difficult for us to break that lifelong addiction. I was one of the many "victims" having grown up on junk food and struggled horribly with eating disorders and dieting throughout my teens/early 20's. And you know the mood issues that come with ingesting that crap. If your family doesn't back you on it, you really have to be able to afford it to revamp your groceries. Fresh food, make everything from scratch, and if you don't - avoid sugar/added sugar and lots of salt. I don't use sugar in anything anymore, just monkfruit. That's been the only successful way I lost my weight and kept it off. I didn't even calorie count or aim for a certain weight, I just made everything from scratch (with filling & main food groups in mind) and cut myself off when I felt satisfied or full. Homemade food is superior and it doesn't even feel like dieting. That's what Americans are missing, I think. We basically survive on instant meals and sugar water.

Because all of those things would require an active state which interfered in the 'free market' to promote foods which were for the public good rather than just letting corporations use food to make vast piles of money at the expense of the nation's health. Not a 10 for me but my God she's at least an 8 definitely a unique face structure, but still definitely symmetrical. Skinny rather short, but no proportions that pull away from beauty. Anything below 7 for me is someone who has a flaw in some category that detracts from beauty to some degree. Above it mea s nothing particularly stands out 9-10 is reserved for things that stand out in a good way. Whether body proportions or unique eye color or tattoo etc.

Similar interviews have been conducted on various channels, across the globe, and what I took out of yours, aside from the fact that all Russian ladies interviewed indeed were ridiculously gorgeous, was the way how level headed, well spoken and unapologetic-ally honest they seemed. I live in Russia and I never saw women so much obsessed with their physique AND with other women's physique. They are sometimes judgmental when you don't fit the beauty standards and are jealous when you do and attracts attention because of it. Which I can understand because they have so much pressure on it. But it can be really tiring and even difficult to make (girl)friends. The worst is when they ask me if I have a Russian boyfriend, and it almost sounds like I stole the man from them or something lmao. But yeah, they really take care of themselves, everything is on point: hair, nails, skin, make up, clothes. And the thing is, they are already beautiful without all of that. I was really in shock when I came here, the concentration of beautiful women is insane.

I feel sorry for girls who treated you like that. Especially that thing with bf. Our women have some prejudice against other women. This implies mostly for older ladies, but sometimes for younger generations too. This is historical and often times it can be really frustrating to deal with. But I'm sure you will find good and loyal girlfriends. Yes, many women here are beautiful and may seem confident, but not inside.

Plus it's a pressure here to find a man/husband. So when they see an aditionnal/"exotic" treat, they become even more hostile. Now I always lie when women ask me if I have a boyfriend, it's just safer like that.

Наверное, девушки с комплексами не соглашались сниматься, но у нас таких очень много, к сожалению. Отношение девушки, которая оценила себя на 6,5, очень репрезентативно, на мой взгляд. Почти все мои знакомые либо сидят на диетах, либо хотят похудеть, либо просто считают себя толстыми. В любом случае пытаются себя ограничивать, а здесь в видео все питаются интуитивно 😦 Мне кажется, что из видео можно сделать вывод, что в целом в России девушки не заморачиваются, наслаждаются собой и просто сами по себе такие красотки, в то время как на самом деле есть большое давление со стороны общества, как мы должны выглядеть. Yet I have being criticized and shamed from overweight ppl bc of my weight countless time. Somehow they think it’s ok to tell a skinny person ,,you are all bones; you should eat more; you would look better with more weight; you don’t have tits/an ass at all; real woman have curves; … etc” but if I would have commented on their weight all hell would broke loose. I don’t care about their weight so I don’t understand why they care so much about mine. The funny thing is the same ppl get upset when someone tells them that they gained weight. But they themself don’t see why telling an already skinny person ,,you lost weight (again)” while making it obvious that they mean it in a negative way could upset the person.

As an American born Russian native teen, I decided to study from the age of 9-16 in Russia and I don’t regret it. All my bffs are Russian, and they are the most trustworthy people I’ve met. As for standards, HAHAHHA much harder than in US. Like at the moment I have some acne that I cover with teen makeup , long curls and a glass hour body.There isn’t an actual standard in Russia, but it matters to look after yourself. Many Russian girls are thin with straight hair, so that’s kinda the common type of girls.Personally I’ve felt bad when I had gained some weight, my Russian friends even suffered from bulimia.It didn’t matter in the society though, I always had a lot of friends no matter how I looked. Now I came back to finish high school in US and I really see the difference in standards. In America I feel much more confident about how I look. As an outsider who lived one month in Moscow the beauty standards where really apparent to me. I got the know the concept of 'face-control' for clubs/going out. It is not like dress-code, although that is a part of it. But if you want to go out in certain bars/clubs you have to look a certain way (that is the case for men as well). You appearance had to be appealing/ fit the standard of the bouncers. For more high-end clubs this meant for women high heels, make-up and short/thight dresses. I got to know some clubs where you could not get in if you weren't wearing heels. You could also be rejected from entering if they did not like the look of your face/features/body. They where more harsh on Russian women and men then on foreigners (bc money and exotic I guess??). It was such a strange experience for me as a Dutch person. Here when going out a dress-code is for a few selected places, but no face-control for sure. In the rest of the places you can pretty much wear whatever you want.

Yeah, true story. When I used to live in Moscow I remember once I was not allowed to enter a club (even though I was about to pay the entrance fee ) just because I was not on high heels and without makeup 🤷🏼♀️ Gosh, I remember I had never felt more discriminated in my life by then 🤦🏼♀️

As a Russian I can confirm the existence of this practice. In ordinary club, which most people used to visit, so called "face-control" bouncer is usually looking for underages, too drunk or behaving inappropriately persons or suspicious "faces"

I think that’s a rude practice really. Face control? Yikes. You need to be dressed nicely but no dress code. That sounds like 80s or 90s…lol Or some restaurants that charge hundreds of dollars. I live in a country with the most number of Michelin restaurants no one has dress code. But then no one goes to that type of restaurants dressed in crazy clothes. As long as a person looks nice and pleasant looking I’ve never seen anyone being refused to enter a club in where I live. But then similarly I’ve never seen girls without makeup going to clubs or in baggy clothes. I think most people from the US would be denied entry if they screen fatness of women lol. I used to live in the US and many girls have weight issues there.

I have been in Ukraine a number of times for business (and once in Russia and Belarus) and I can confirm what you say. Not only women want to look at their best, but they want a beautiful man. I'm a man, and I consider myself passable, a 6. However, because of my intelligence and my charisma, I have been with many attractive women over the course of my life. I struggled in Ukraine. I don't like to show off, and for them it's so important. I found, between Ukrainians, the most superficial women, and also the most calculated. Even if they are between the most beautiful (but usually with bad teeth), Russian and Ukrainian women aren't women that I would pursue. Of course this is a generalization, I can't speak of all the women.

She’s obviously someone with a naturally larger build, and I think there would be less sickness on either ends of the spectrum (underweight and obese) if people didn’t obsess so much about every detail of their body and just embrace what it looks like when they take care of themselves by leading a general balanced life style.

She was a ballet student and very pretty in her pictures but she moved to Moscow and never heard from her. One Russian young woman got bothered with my a bit thick eyebrows, she even joke I was from Romania but I am Brazilian haha and my eyebrows are not even thicker just medium and natural. Here in Brazil, body type is big butt and breasts, as well fitness legs (specially) and arms. My natural body and appearance (even color of skin) is totally different from where I live, and I don’t force to be slim or do eyebrows or make up, just born that way))) most of Brazilians don’t understand my body type Russians women are the most beautiful in my opinion (and Brazilian men too)) but when they keep natural without plump their lips or much eyelashes… all that forced to fit in outside Europe trend, it is sad.

They set very different standards for themselves compared to women of other country - I think that's the main difference. They way they look after themselves, not just physically but also mentally, intellectually, it's quite self evident from this video. Thanks for sharing.

@Eli from Russia Thanks for sharing Eli! Lots of information about what Russian women perceive as beauty that I didn't know yet as a non-Russian. Also, the lady and aspiring actress that you interview at 1:14 hits the nail on the head, with regards to Jennifer Aniston. I am glad to see that more human beings have noticed the obvious change in appearance and makeover that Jennifer has gone through over the years and decades. Due to the fact I am huuuge Friends fan, but always have had this sense of disappointment with Jennifer. Looking at how she was in 1994-97 etc. You know, the early seasons. Then, as Friends was steadily progressing towards season 10 and the series finale, being witness to the decline of her natural beauty and appeal simultaneously. Later were the cosmetic procedures of course, like fillers, but in Friends it was all about the "hair" ... and being skinny etc. Hence, it's also great to see that this woman you were interviewing illustrates what should *not* be done for the sake of beauty, including the "natural" aspect. Natural beauty is the most important *value* that men cherish in women. Speaking from personal experience. Last but not least. Thank you for giving "Western" audiences, like me, a glimp of Russia as "normal" ... rather than the constant fear- and hate-mongering that happens on the news and programs. Keeping it light-hearted and enjoyable as an eye-opening experience.
