Trooper's Narrative: On 12-16-2024, at approximately 3:37 P.M., I was patrolling Grand Avenue in an effort to locate a black Hyundai Elantra with a temporary paper tag that had been recently stolen from a residence in Fort Smith. Fort Smith Police Department provided information to Troop H that the vehicle had been stolen within the last hour. Fort Smith Police was tracking the vehicle, and the last location was pinged near O’Reilly auto parts store on Grand Avenue. I observed a black Elantra that met the description leaving the O’Reilly’s parking lot on Grand Avenue. The black Elantra turned north onto May Avenue. I also turned onto May Avenue to attempt to confirm if that was the suspected stolen vehicle. The driver of the black Elantra rushed the intersection and did not stop at the stop sign while turning east onto North I Street. The driver of the black Elantra immediately pulled into the 2810 North I ST driveway. I initiated a traffic stop on the black Elantra for failure to obey the stop sign, but the suspect backed out of the residence driveway and started to flee. I pursued the vehicle for a couple of blocks, through alleys and city streets. At one point, the fleeing suspect drove very close to school buses while ignoring the intersections. I observed the driver driving recklessly, ignoring stop signs, posted speed limits, and driving through the front yard of a house. Trp. Robert Roam was traveling west on North E Street attempting to locate the pursuit to assist. The Elantra turned east on North E Street towards Trp. Robert Roam. The Elantra drove over the sidewalk attempting to turn south into the next alley, but Trp. Roam pulled in front and intercepted it. The suspect vehicle subsequently slowed down, and I positioned my unit right behind the Elantra. Trp. Roam and I conducted a felony takedown on the driver. I placed the female driver under arrest without any further incident. I identified the suspect as CORTNEY NICHOLE SOUSA. In addition, Fort Smith Police Department confirmed the Elantra as the vehicle that was recently stolen. I transported Sousa to the Sebastian County Detention Center and booked her for felony fleeing and for possession of a stolen vehicle. An additional $10,000 bond was set on Sousa by the Sebastian County Prosecutor. Sousa is believed to be connected to several other break-ins and vehicle thefts. Fort Smith Detectives are investigating the other cases. Charges 27-51-601(d) Fail to obey stop sign 27-16-303 Driving on suspended license 27-50-308(b)(1)(B) Reckless driving 1st 5-54-125 (d)(3) 2023 Felony Fleeing Vehicle-substantial danger of death 5-36-106 (e) (2) Theft by receiving $5,000-$25,000

If she has something on her, possibly trying to dump it in the squad car-claiming that it was already there. Cameras don’t always register with people. Cameras have caught people actually removing items from a body cavity ( use your imagination ) to dump in a squad car. If it’s on them or in them and they physically enter a detention facility-more charges.
