I am an EQUESTRIAN and I have Rode Horses all of my life. By the title of this video I thought the horse was going to buck off the guard and run away. All the horse did was act up a little, that was nothing. I had a horse that used to buck me off all the time and run home without me. Horses are animals and have a mind of their own. I feel sorry for those horses with the big heavy metal bits in their mouths. The reason the horses constantly throw their heads up in the air its because they are trying to avoid the bit because it hurts their mouth. And Horses hate to stand in one spot for hours at a time, they need to move.

The" bit" does not hurt them, if the horse doesn't want to stay, will be replaced by another! Only thing I would say is the tourist is kept away from touching, but if the horse loves being in the company of tourist's? Then let them be! The horse is trained to be a soldier and a soldier's carrier's, if they don't want to be there, then they won't be! All my love to those who serve our country! I thought it was the bit too. One video of this overweight guard and the horse was standing in this one spot. It must have hurt him. He kept trying to get away from his rider. This is the first time I even knew they did this. What's the occasion?

Also they are only there in the box for 2 hours and not everyday and I’m sure they are treated well especially since the soldiers take care of them :)

The King's troop horses are based in Woolwich and u used to see them every Sunday whilst in hospital as they rode out for exercise. This soldiers are so good to their horses. I looked after them and taught many children and disabled adults to ride. Over a period of 15 years. ❤loved every minute of it. I'm disabled myself now and unable to ride. I miss the horsey smell though. 🙂

I had an opportunity to come to London in 1995. I was there for Queen Elizabeth’s birthday parade, and Londoners who knew I was from America pushed me up to the front of the queue. I was amazed and delighted when the queen looked directly at me, and waved that day. I will never forget it. I have been an Anglophile ever since.

There was a story told by her companion. She was out for a walk and met two Americans on the path. They had a nice chat. All the while not knowing she was the queen. Love the story of how people are just people in the end.

The guard handled this horse well, working to keep his horse under control when it was pretty determined to gallop to the front. The horse didn't leave the group, it was not allowed to gallop up in the group which frustrated it to the point of losing all forward movement. It is a tricky thing to direct that much energy without frustrating the horse into full explosive mode. Thank you for recording this lovely sight.

I think the horse was just getting excited after mounting the guard duty and wanted to hurry up some free time. I often watched them being exorcised in Hyde Park in the early hours and being given some free time.

As a horse trainer, seeing a horse having a meltdown, I have the utmost respect for those troopers who do everything one handed, trying to keep everyone safe and sound. If you are really a horse trainer you should see that these horses are thoroughly unhappy and that many of the guards are not really good riders. In every single horse guard video you can see horses violently and repeatedly shaking their head - I don't know if it is the sharp bits or something else, but it is a fact. The police horses in this video are much calmer than the guards' horses, and there must be a reason for that.

@Dany-yi5rz The troopers horses are wearing a double bit, and both regiments, the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals, usually have their horses on a loose rein, and only one rein at that. When a horse has a "meltdown," there has to be a reason. Like someone waving a flag nearby, or a microphone blaring nearby, or the horse just doesn't want to deal with the hordes of ignorant people. Then you want to see horsemanship? They do everything ONE HANDED. They do not place their sword in its scabbard, but maintain it's position, and deal with a horse that is rearing, bucking up a bit in the back end, kicking out, spinning swiftly, all with one hand. They are all military personnel, and they are true horsemen. The bits used are a straight bar and a snaffle bit. Nothing that aggressive. So I do know what I'm talking about. And it's bits I myself have used in combination myself. So yes, I do know of what I speak of. I've been in the horse industry for 50+ years and a trainer for 30+ years. I've started over 1000 horses. I worked with a fellow who was a former Guardsman and was surprised when he told me that he had nothing to do with horses before joining the army and that he was taught to ride after completing basic training. From memory, I think he said it was about 3 months learning the fundamentals before adding complex ceremonial skills.

I've seen the new guardsmen get put up on the horses and without any training have to learn at the deep end. Most young guards don't have horses at home! So I bet they hate seeing these videos pointing out the misbehaving horses. They do look beautiful but very hard work especially one handed doesn't bear thinking about! The horses are so used to walking with the band they just got excited when they heard the band in the distance... The female mounted officer clearly gave some great advice because the horse calmed down for a bit then wondered why they weren't following in the opposite direction... They're so well trained as are the guards but at the end of the they're horses... Not many riders could control these horses in with one hand and stay calm themselves...

The lady police officer is an excellent rider,when the guards horse started playing up she knew exactly where to position her horse so the other one didn't collide with the following police car,she also positioned her horse near the railings when he got too close to them. The guard also did a great job in trying to control him,not easy at the best of times but one handed whilst holding a sword in the other and staying calm was just brilliant

Indeed she is! She did some very subtle moves with her horse which calmed down the jumpy one. She knew precisely when to go ahead, when to walk, when to come alongside. She displayed great understanding of the situation and sophisticated horsemanship.

So special! As a Polish Australian living in Australia, it’s wonderful to watch this spectacle. Everything about this is quite fascinating. It’s Saturday 18/2/2024, 3.30pm Eastern Australian Standard Time. This is the first time I’ve watched the spectacle of the King’s Guards dressed in robes of a beautiful shade of red and gold moving along The Mall with their magnificent horses. The horses certainly have personalities of their own. The Guard remained cool, calm, and collected. Well done to the King’s Life Guards. I was in London 1969. I saw the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and enjoyed some familiar Gilbert and Sullivan. I did not know about the Horse Guards then. Woe is me. At 80yrs I won't be remedying that situation but I've very much enjoyed seeing them on my smartphone. Thank you. from Boston, MA USA. Have you ever heard Barbados called "Little England?" It was said that Barbadians are "More English than the English." I'm sure that's no longer true, but I had 3 Barbadian grandparents and it was true when I was a child. When I was about 12, we spent Thanksgiving Day in Brooklyn, NY with my father's family. Before dinner, all my aunts & uncles stood when my Grandfather from St. Phillip's, B'dos said I too should have a little wine. Then he raised his glass and said "God save the Queen."

The ironic thing is that a large proportion of the population have never bothered to journey from the suburbs to see these things! Our family did, because we have a zillion French and German cousins who came to stay, and we took each one to the tourist sights. Most of my school friends were familiar with the shops round Oxford Street but had never been to the Tower, St Paul’s Cathedral, or the changing of the guard. They knew about the mounted guards on Whitehall, but only because you can see them from the upper deck of an 88 bus on the way “up west”.

Thank you, I used to live in London, while I never saw this ride I did see these beautiful,horses and riders in other circumstances, If you come to London and love horses, ask to go to the stables, we used to get in for free but I suspect you would need to pay now. Its a great to see some of the horses up close and talk to the soldiers. I think you can see some of the coaches, the golden one blows your mind.

As a kid I was lucky enough to see the guards changing a number of times (both on horse back and on foot) as my aunt lived in London and so she would often take me and my two cousins to watch them (think it was cos it was a good way to keep us entertained for a while lol) 💖 The guards are so intune to the horses and he did exactly what he needed to. Even the most well behaved horse can spook or play up at anytime, there is no such thing as a 100% bombproof horse as they are living creatures and so can have a off day

There's a video on YT where the Queen's horse gets skittish because of a loud noise in a parade. She does the same thing. Looks like drawing the reins up short and in some unseen way dominating the horse physically. Very impeccable.

I’m tuning in from Palm Springs California. Your vlogs make me extremely nostalgic for London. I first visited in the 60’s and then moved there in 1970 with the intention of immigrating permanently. I saw so many of these events that it became just part of daily life in London. At the time I didn’t realize how special I had it because I lived in Knightsbridge next door to Lord Carrington and just a short walk to the Knightsbridge barracks and Hyde Park. Seeing the various Guardsmen and their horses exercising in the park or traversing on their way to the other barracks and duty on guard. I was also fortunate to see Buckingham Palace. So I am forever missing the UK and London in particular but I’m happy to be connected via your videos. Thank you. .

Then understand the explanation that these horses are in pain from the bit and constantly showing it with head bobbing, mouthing, etc. as well as a lot of stress. This is cruelty

​@@starscreamofvosactually, both head bobbing, as well as licking and chewing, are not at all sign of pain. Licking and chewing is usually considered a good sign, and can actually mean a few different things. When a horse has a chiropractic adjustment, licking and chewing, is a sign of the release working and in fact them often feeling less pain. It can also just be then playing with the bit, in the same way humans do, when we have a pen cap in our mouth or are chewing gum. The bits they use, are not "sharp", as someone previously stated, bits are also not uncomfortable, if they were, no horse would ever allow one to be put into their mouth again. These horses are standing on loose reins, so their is no pressure on the bit, otherwise they would not be able to throw there heads around as they do. The head bobbing is the one group realising that they are almost done and about to go home. The fresh horses you could see were no moving much at all. Well one thing that horses have are very long, and very good memories, so they know where this routine leads and are simply getting impatient. I am betting that the horse that had the bit of a disagreement with his rider, was either young, newer to the training or both, and simply got a little ahead of themselves wanting to head home to his bed after a good days work. The rider did quite well, but he was extremely hampered by only having one hand to work with. The police woman was obviously giving him some coaching and they got there in the end. It also may have even helped just having another horse beside him who was calm kind of saying, "Dude, what's your problem? Relax, you won't get there any quicker this way.". In short if these horses were in pain, I can assure you that every rider there would be on the ground looking up. A horse does not forget pain easily, and often will never forget repeated pain from the same source in the same way, so why would any horse let you ride it, if it caused pain? I have trained horses that loved working to the point that if they were not worked everyday, they got cranky the next time you worked together. I have trained horses that loved to jump, if they were set loose in a field with jumps in it, they would start jumping courses themselves. A good trainer, trains to an animals strengths, and those horses love working with you. The horses in this video have to be fairly what we call bomb proof, so they don't spook at every noise, or movement that the public makes, and that is something the riders are counting on to ensure that they don't crack their head open on the road. I can assure you from experience of working with animals who have been treated well and animals who have been rescued from places where they weren't, that every one of those riders will treat their horse well, because then that horse will take care of, and protect you. If you don't treat a horse well, it's fight or flight response is always at the front of it's mind, and there is no rider who will stop or calm that flight down, because the horse can't trust you that it is safe.

I have seen videos of the front guards, but only short views of the parade grounds. Thank you for showing the change over, and especially the walk down the red road. I han no idea if they rode back and forth or if they rode in trailers, but then learned they rode their horses to the barracks (but have never seen it). Lifelong horse lover from Florida, U.S.A. here. I’ve never seen this part of the changing of the King’s Guards, it was wonderful, thank you! I tried to look at each horse while standing, thinking of him joining the Guard group and being trained under the watchful eye of Queen Elizabeth, who loved them so dearly. I’ll always miss her. And now they carry on for King Charles, God bless him. The little spirited dance of the last horse in the group? I enjoyed seeing it - maybe he was placed last because he is newer to the group, or his spirit more expressive. I loved it and he responded well with a bit of time and direction from his rider. He’ll be fine with more practice with his job. I’d love to see more videos of these horses from the beginning of their lives, being bred and born into the Royal Stables, or found in the UK. To see them, named, running free in green pastures, and watch them in training, perhaps with Queen Elizabeth watching, would be wonderful. Would that be possible? I’ve just subscribed, thank you for this beautiful video!

I enjoyed the beauty of the cavalry horses. I didn't get to see them in person while in London, as my visit was short. The guardsman and police officer did great in staying together while the cavalry horse got over it's tantrum. I've seen quite a few horses act up. Their riders don't always do as well as he did. I'm from Idaho (USA) and am a horse owner/rider. Great video. Cheers.
