Female Foley Insertion (Urinary Catheter) [How to Insert Nursing Skills]

1. Pt supine, feet closer to hips, knee's apart 2. Remove foley kit out of plastic bag - use plastic bag as trash bag for things ur done w/ 3. Open sterile kit on bedside table and place bw pt legs, remind them not to touch (keep sterile) 4. Put on sterile gloves from kit, watching sterile kit to ensure it's still sterile 5. Put drape underneath pts perineum, shiny side down 6. Then fenestrated drape (has hole) over pts perineum 7. Lubricate catheter 8. Attach saline syringe to balloon port 9. Apply iodine to cotton swab. Use non dominant hand to spread labia and clean meatus, swiping from top to bottom 10. Insert catheter into urethral opening till u see a flash of urine into tube - then go 1 inch further. Then inflate balloon, once inflated remove syringe quickly and pull catheter out till u get slight resistance to know ur at base of the bladder 11. Secure catheter to pt thigh via tape, bag on rail of bed. Remove/discard drape/supplies. Note colour/clarity/amount of urine & document insertion.

@@iamasaint_5727 If you take the associates degree course they have much to teach and quickly and not all students get to do everything. So they truly can go into the nursing work and not be able to do many things. Sometimes it takes experience to really learn about nursing more. Listening to others, watching and you do learn as you go in some ways. Unfortunately, it can happen that you miss doing something here or here.

Why is everyone shocked about this lol it’s common for nurses not to do certain things. It all depends on where you work as a nurse. If you’re working as a psych ward or prison nurse, you’re passing meds, not inserting catheters lol I think a lot of people believe nurses only work in hospitals and nursing homes.

Blood in catheter tubing blocks the catheter. It occurs when there is an infection or when you insert too fast or too far, causing trauma/ bleeding. If you open the package with your gloves already on, you are contaminating everything. 1. open the package, 2. put sterile gloves on, 3. take care not to cross contaminate. You never want to use a catheter if a person does not need one. She will be put at risk for a CAUTI. Prolonged catheter use can result in a urinary tract infection.

I don't think anyone would claim the insertion is painless. She was referring to the inflation of the balloon that keeps the catheter in the bladder. There shouldn't be any pain associated with the inflation of the balloon because it should be inside the open cavity of the bladder, not in the tiny urethral tube. If there's additional pain when the balloon is inflated, it most likely means the catheter isn't inserted far enough.

I had open heart surgery and awoke with a Foley catheter in place (thank god I was anaesthetized for this procedure!) but I wonder if they started placing it before I was fully anesthetized as I kept feeling like I had to urinate. Any comments on this? Is feeling like you have to pee part of the process?

Well, I watched an aide open the cath package lube the cath and insert it somewhere. But, the vlog doesn’t show the important parts, where is the urethra. Maybe the vlog people think that showing the urethra is too sensitive to be shown. Without it this vlog is useless. Get out of the 1950’s, let’s see what I am going to have to do and where!!!

Helpful video. But for a non medical person it's not clear to see and learn things as most of the procedure captured from far camera. I remember when I was covid positive, I got hospitalized where there was no GP, and interns didn't know how to insert catheter. They emptied my bladder through syringe. Then referred me yo other hospital. In other hospital also, they discharged me in few hours being covid positive. Then I had to manage catheter and all things by myself at home. KZbin is helpful.

@@savstrelley you wouldn't be turning away if you place table next to you, in the OR room, a much more sterile environment, the surgical table is usually to the side of the scrubbing nurse and they have to constantly twist facing surgical table or the operating table to pass or take back instruments. the key is not to give your "back" to the sterile field

Letting the labia close, Yes, you are correct! She did do this incorrectly. However, she did not touch the swab ends, it clearly shows he grabbing at least an inch from the end of the swab... C'mon now. Also her hands are still considered sterile so what are you fussing about... She hadn't even touched the patient yet.

To answer your question no she did not contaminate the sterile field using the purple gloves because the outside part of the wrapper is not considered sterile only the inside part is sterile and when you open it up as long as you open it using the corners of the 1 inch boarder then you are fine. However you must have sterile gloves on in order to touch the supplies inside the box/kit because if you don’t have your sterile gloves on then you will have contaminated the supplies. That is why the kits we use tend to have the package of sterile glove right on top of the supply box when you go to open the wrap you can grab it without contaminating the items.

isn't moving the sterile gloves away from the sterile field back on the side table which is not sterile, a break of sterility? maybe this is my OR experience talking but you must put on your sterile gloves inside the sterile field you just unrwapped from around the kit or else the gloves are contaminated no? or is it cause gloves come wrapped in their own sterile field wrapping too?

No numbing agent for the poor patient. I have this done as I am Bladder Cancer patient & I can tell you this hurts sometimes excruciating if you have an inexperienced nurse 😢

I think you have to realize they should have done that before she got started? That might be called not outside this teaching, but just done before, she got to the main point of video. as meaning her teaching the insertion of it. i know usually they tell them they are the patient's nurse and give their name and what you will be doing etc, and look at name band, and perhaps scanning it, and ask patient their name, and on and on and on, but think she takes it for granted you are studying nursing and know this? But a patient could be unconscious, and not able to sign or to even know if you did all of that so there would not be any reason. You would get consent ahead if and when possible. The doctor must order it anyway.

Actually, you have it backwards. There's no way you could reach with your non-dominate hand and inflate the balloon. You'd be reaching so far across your body. Once inserted, the sterility of the skill is complete and you can use either hand to do whatever it is that you need to do. However, what you said is most definitely backwards.

I was going to say this. It can be difficult to find the urethral opening when there is extra folds to consider. It really helps to have another person holding the legs open and folds up, to enable you to execute the procedure correctly.

After I woke from surgery, I was BLEEDING FROM THE VAGINA (and it stung, that skin between the vaginal and anal opening, to pee after they removed it) I haven't had a period in years. I think they violently violated me with the swab. 😢

I did my first insertion and patient is not complaining for pain other than a slight chilly sting feeling. Always advice your patient to drink plenty of water first before insertion and catether insertion should never be given to single lady patients..just professional doctors and it has to be with a certificate...
