So cool to see someone doing a video about these films! I found the first Stray Cat Rock film out of nowhere, loved it, and then watched the first 2 scorpion films - Jailhouse 41 is fantastic!

Literally why I clicked this video. I saw "scorpion" and a lady dressed like Yu's Miss Scorpion. Crazy, Sion Sono is such a genius.

I dunno if I agree with your take on the first film.. let me elaborate The statement about the first film being a basic revenge plot is right, but the plot itself and how it’s presented is also different in ways. I agree with your take on the visual art style, and I think it’s great in certain areas, but part of what makes the first film incredible is the relation between characters and the visual storytelling. A great example of this is in the digging scenes where the way different people look at each other, the way Matsu’s facial expressions change, the way other inmates feel about her, it all connects and shows the different characters and inmates’ intentions and feelings for one another. The whole series is excellent with visual storytelling, in how women dress or look at one another; that’s what makes Matsu so interesting is that she has barely any dialogue yet conveys and tells so much through the story with what she does and how she looks at people. Another thing left out of the review of the first film is how fiercely feminist it is, showing the male authorities and aggressors in ugly lights with putrid laughs and disgusting facial expressions as they torture and assault and objectify the women. As well as the ideas planted into your head from the art scenes of emotions regarding certain actions, people, professions, and environments which would cause Matsu’s vengeful spirit to rise (shown in her actions and reactions to things that happen, such as Yuki’s death). Despite the first film being less artsy and more based in the realism and torture/revenge area, it is without a doubt surpassing the exploitation genre in more ways than just the artistic scenes and presentations. You need to not watch a movie as a genre but as the very thing on the screen, so coming in to see an exploitation film you will miss the subtleties that I was lucky enough to see without prior thought of watching a work of exploitation cinema.

i completely agree with your analysis. i don’t often watch exploitation films but the original is very powerful and unique, considering it’s genre or not. also, i believe the reviewer in this vid oversimplified the plot of the first film. sure, she’s seeking revenge on her lover who betrayed her, but she didn’t just take the fall for him. she was also gang r*ped, all so the boyfriend had more to convict them with.

his gripes with these movies feel like he is looking for anything to complain about. these movies were AMAZING! and should only be watched together in full. also these movies came out in the 70's when the things they did with their respective genre mix was ground breaking.

I agree. Besides the first Scorpion movie is pretty much perfect at being what it wanted to be, so not sure how one can complain about anything in it.

Strangely enough the box set of this series only has one, three and four, which means you miss the one that seems to be the best if your review is right. It also should be note that Toei did a lot of sexploitation flicks back then. They were often the B picture, most were about Girl gangs and bad school girls. They were much cooler than I'm making them sound.

I don't know if you're talking about a different set, but I can confirm personally that Arrow Video's box set contains the all four movies. (And a sweet interview booklet with a poster too!) Also you're right, Toei was very different then than what it is now. It just sounds strange in hindsight considering how big they've become!
