I like to imagine she died at the end and the sequel didn't happen. I also love how she and the narrator talks about how she blocks off her emotions so they don't block her revenge and her final act after all of this is one great emotional scream letting out all of the emotions she's supressed her whole life.

I read the ending with Kobue as another turn at Karma, for Yuki. Her whole life was for revenge. She was literally born for it. So, when it was complete, she had nothing left to live for. However, Karma was not done with her. Yuki embraced her death, so, what was with her cry at the end? It was because, after everything she had been through, Yuki was not allowed to die. She would go on, living a life without purpose because of the heavy weight of human lives she took. That's why she let out such an anguished cry at the end. Yuki was doomed to live on, probably never able to atone for her sins.

Her whole reason of birth was sad in a way it's like if your parents have a heavy loan that they themselves can't pay for so they procreate you as a reason to get rid of those loans which is just very tragic as she ended her mission she basically had no other purpose

I saw the cry as her finally letting out all of the emotions the movie said she held in all her life. So many feelings and emotions can be read into that scream. That's why it's great.

@@Not_So_Slim_Shady Agreed about her crying out. I wouldn't think she actually survived the stab (more precisely, she was nog intended to survive it by the writers, since the sequel didn't start as a Lady Snowblood film, they just eventually "sticked" it to Kaji's film). So I too think it was the outbursting feelings, literally everything from the twenty years. Recently rewatched the movie, and seriously teared up by her cry.

All the music in this video is by Meiko Kaji herself, as was the theme song of the film. She's still singing, and still awesome - I saw er in concert in 2020 and she was every bit as powerful and emotional then as she was recording this in '72. Here she is collaborating with Argentinian duo Cande y Paulo in 2022: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bImugKpubbJkfrc

So... I found your video by accident and am really glad I did. Thank you for making it! I’m glad to see someone else not only knows about this gem of a film but loves it as much as I. I’m also a huge, die hard Wu Tang fan as well so all those movies are some of my favorites. I’ll have to check out your other videos on your channel. Thanks again!

At the end she becomes revenge itself... It doesn't matter if she hurt someone innocent, that makes the same as the terrible people that hurt her family. Gotta say, her dead was what she deserved, nothing much, nothing less.

I've seen the movie a couple of times on TCM 'Imports". The movie is good, the actress beautiful, and the title song fabulous. I prefer Japanese movies, especially those in the immediate post war era. Recently saw two Lone Wolf & Cub movies. Lady Snowblood is bloody, gory, the cinema photography outstanding, and, for me, she is still the sympathetic character in the movie. Her acting is spot on: a look, a movement of her head, her voice, and her body language are all used to convey her character.

Brilliant movie and entertaining, great review. I would add that Yuki most likely don't have the intention to live onward. As you said, revenge was her father, it was the only reason to her life. After it was fulfilled, Kobue was the perfect person to take her life, fulfilling Her revenge for real. No superhero, but definitely a very anti anti-hero who is not afraid of sacrificing innocent lives if it helps kill the actual villain as well. Specially glad you mentiones Meiko's eyes. She acts with them in a way probably noone else could.

I honestly didn't know Lady Snowblood until I found Kill Bill (Yeah I concur awesome movie by the way) And far as I'm concerned about Lady Snowblood, I'll just leave you a like considering yes there's a dark side to revenge. The thing is once you achieve your target, what now for the killer turned outright murderer of innocents after. Sounds familar to me with O-Ren after killed the man responsible for her parent's death made her a killer herself after in KillBill. And I'm not surprised Lady Snowblood's no different in that regard as much as Yuki means well as much her revenge strays down a similar path to O-Ren. It always does no matter no matter how good or ill the killer's intentions are to begin with; That destroys the killer's sense of justice after observed in this case. (And I didn't need spoilers about end of movie by the way.) All that said, Lady Snowblood was a rather interesting story of revenge suprisingly not much diiferent to O-Ren's backstory final fight. Which was awesome fight to the death. Live & die by the sword..always awesome when it's women with the sword lol.

O-Ren's fight with the bride at the end of Vol 1 is a better sequel to Lady Snowblood than Lady Snowblood 2.

I loved it, too. But the blood looked like painting. That was basically my only gripe. That and shaky-cam fight scenes.

Ryūrei's death happening simultaneous to his father's is emblematic of Lady Snowblood reconciling her own duality. Yuki conceals her virtues, it's stated a few times she has a poignant longing for warmth and innocence. But the asura inside her demands blood at the expense of virtue. Ryūrei has been shot numerous times before Yuki stabs him so it is actually a coup de gras simultaneous to an assassination. Much like her being the subject of revenge later by way of Banzo's daughter, this is a reconciliation of injustice, karma, revenge, etc. That is why the Asura is ultimately vanquished because all has been resolved.

I think if the son had moved, the dad would have killed Yuki. Her revenge is imperfect, and the scene exemplifies her idealism versus reality.

I'll leave you a like and stop watching.. since this actually seems rather interesting. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Just the idea of having a portion of your "caged soul" leave in the form a child that is born innocent, even in such a place, is one of the smartest things I've heard on a story in a while.

It's a pretty good read however their is a lot of nudity violence and many times were Yuki is almost raped alongside various other rapes that occur to other women and one man. Just my two cents in case you want to read it

Judging from the English subtitles in the 1st film the man with Yuki’s mom was probably her half father. Since it’s said that she apparently has a “big brother” who was probably conceived before her mom was taken away.

There are some good observations in this video but it is way too long. Who do you think you audience is? People who have not seen the movie and do not want it spoiled or people who have seen the movie and are fully aware of the plot points which take up most of the video. If it is the later, then much of the video can be condensed to your analysis
