I think a lot of people are uncomfortable with terms like androgynous because some people use it as an insult. („Not womanly enough…“) Personally I think we should try to normalize it, because androgyny can be really cool and most people don‘t fit into strict binaries by nature.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is confusing range (people's ability to reach very high notes) and voice type. Example, Dimash can sing higher than most females on earth, does that mean he's a soprano? NO. It's all about where your voice sits comfortably and resonates in. I can sing very high tenor notes, but I am still a baritone all day every day.

After watching some recording behind videos of Gidle, it's no wonder Yuqi often sounds deeper and like a mezzo in title tracks, but sounds more natural and like a soprano in their side tracks. It's because Soyeon literally tells her to SING MORE LIKE A MAN. She's utilizing Yuqi's voice for a stylistic effect. It turns out Minnie is not the only stylistic singer in Gidle. Yuqi often stylizes her voice as well. But the funny thing is when people mistaken Yuqi's stylistic deep voice as her normal singing voice, and thinking that her natural light voice in those side tracks are stylistic. Her recent solo performance 'Could it be' is further prove that she's a soprano. I am a mezzo trained for years and I struggled to reach her high notes in the chorus. Those Eb5 notes damn it. She made them sound so light and easy.

Yuqi isn’t even the densest in her group either IMO. If anything, I would say Miyeon is the densest in the group but nonetheless, all of them (in (G)-IDLE I mean) are light sopranos afaik lol.

Despite agreeing with some points, I heavily disagree to others. Imo trying to type voices based only in the timbre can be very disastrous. The passagio, which is very important to classify voices, is not even mentioned in the video. Imo the passagio makes a lot easier and turns the typing much more objective. as a enthusiastic about voices and vocal technique, i have to say that the video is relying in too subjective traits, making some classification very confusing 🫤. It was very frustrating when the video says that cher is a low mezzo only bc she has a 'womanly' voice, implying that in order to be a contralto the singer must have an 'androgenous' sound, which is far from truth. But still, i appreciate the very informative content
@bartek68469 күн бұрын
I don’t think that’s what they were implying about Cher and the contraltos (?) At least, I understood what they meant differently Based on my understanding of the video, the distinction between voice types is made based on when they start putting effort in their range. Ex: Sopranos having a more noticeable ease above A4 compared to mezzos and then contraltos having to put more effort in the F4-G4 range So they weren’t exactly implying that the only difference between those two voice types is that contraltos sound more androgynous, but just mentioned it as a sub point to their entire explanation If I also understood them correctly, whilst the range in which a vocalist starts putting effort helps wi determining the voice types, how heavy/light it sounds is used to determine the sub type, like Low/Medium/High
@le_shimab9 күн бұрын
@bartek6846 again strongly disagree with methodology. The one I find to make more sense is fach classification Also take me for example, my passagio is around G4 - C#5, range C3 - G5, timbre is extremely heavy and Full bodied, yet there is a softness and is not androgynous at all. Would you classify me as mezzo, even though I can't hold for long on a mezzo upper range? The thing about 'effort' don't make any sense, bc trained singers know how to navigate through their range easily without effort

And the long-awaited video arrives~ (you owe me Mr. Velvet~ you know I don't make public appearances anymore~) You put in a lot of effort into this one~ (If our DMs were any evidence of that lmao) and hopefully it will help people understand and figure out that there's a lot a person can do with their voice to make it sound smaller, bigger, darker, lighter, or brighter and it isn't indicative of their natural vocal weight. How "big-sounding" or "small-sounding" a voice depends often on how a vocalist sings and how much they're developed, and it's great that you showed that in your video. Someone as "soprano" as Ariana Grande is pretty much the same voice as the considered "mezzo", Beyoncé. Beyoncé just has incredibly advanced chest development. Sullyoon can sound exactly like Haewon, and Haewon can sound exactly like Lily- all light sopranos singing differently. Mina and Tzuyu of Twice can sound like Taeyeon and Jessica of SNSD, or Yujin from IVE once they've developed enough. Jihyo and Nayeon of Twice and Tiffany of SNSD can sound like the "big-voiced" Ailee, Beyoncé, Lina, and U.ji, they're just not developed as much, or heck, let's not stray far level-wise. You've shown that both the considered brightest voices in Twice can sound as "dark" and "heavy" as Christina Aguilera, and they don't need to go far from their own group either, I've seen some people claim with confidence that Jeongyeon is a heavier soprano here, and I can tell you she's still pretty much the same voice spectrum as Nayeon and Jihyo. Chaewon and Sana, light sopranos, can make their voices sound very childlike and bright, and have relative ease in the upper midbelts, similar and close to the high sopranos, but they're still just light sopranos. Eunji, a non-light soprano, can sound like one when she modifies her timbre enough, as seen in All For You. Point being, there's a lot more nuance to voice typing than "oh but *insert groupmate who obviously sings bolder and darker* sounds heavier than *insert groupmate who obviously sings lighter and brighter*" and people who comment on such should keep that in mind, because more often than not~ you'll always have to take a second, third, maybe even more than 10-20 listens before being totally sure of someone's voice type considering all these nuances. You did well Soul Velvet showing that here, and you did well educating people over the last year, but you can take a break now~ I know you need one, so join me in the retirement home 🤭🤭🤫🤫 lmao.

She is a mezzo soprano. This video was coming alright at first by differentiating weight (tract) and type( vocal fold thickness) but got them confused as well. The important marker of voice type is tessitura, where the voice feels most comfortable, and you can tell than irregardless of age, Beyoncé always felt comfortable at that A4 - Eb5 region. That’s the literal sweet spot of the mezzo. In fact their money note is often In that area, where as Sopranos, irregardless of voice weight are more comfortable higher in that E5-G5 region, in fact most of them would often go for an F5/G5 as their money note/opening note. On the heaviest side(think Jhud, aretha Franklin) and the lightest side (Sohyang, Ariana grande), and maybe Patti labelle somewhere in the middle in terms of weight. All these singer like showing off their F5s(more jhud and aretha), and G5/G#5(sohyang and Ariana). Sohyang is the perfect example of a soprano because her songs live in the 5th octave and not just 5th but (mostly above D5) which tells you where her voice is comfortable and can go for hours in that region, Beyoncé cannot do that, as much as F5 is within her accebke middle voice, she can’t stay there. She can’t maintain melodic lines for long. Think of it like this, if she had to project in a large hall, for 7 night back to back, do you think her voice would be able to sustain that?

This video is just another instance of this crap being carried on. I don't buy for a second OP knows what they're talking about. The moment they labelled Cher as a mezzo I knew it was crap. As a contralto myself, I'm so tired of feeling like we're being erased and misunderstood. I don't sound anything like the contraltos in this video, but that doesn't mean I'm not a contralto. My voice is just lighter and higher than the dramatics- even Cher has a deeper, heavier voice than I do. Lyric and coloratura contraltos exist, yet we're constantly ignored by videos like this.

It doesn't help I guess that my low voice and my high voice sounds completely different, after F4/G4 my voice becomes lighter and brighter, but I am much heavier before this, begin to sound like a man around F3/G3 I think. Now you have me wondering again. I should probably stop wondering and just train lol. I guess I just want an idea of how high I will be able to belt easily when I'll be trained.

Thanks for this video! I know I shouldn't as a beginer, but I was trying to figure if I was a contralto as I can sing low (E3-A4, goes in falsetto to D5), or if I was just a mezzo who wasn't trained to sing high yet (as I haven't began to develop the high register yet). This video convinced me I was probably a mezzo : I sound way too light in the high notes, like some of the high mezzos you showed, even if my low notes are way much heavier (I still remember this day someone called me "sir" on the phone lol). Sounds like I have two different voices between the low and the high register, but I guess I would not sound as light if I were a contralto. Thanks!

Hello! Yes, I more or less agree with you here! Good video! Thank you! But in the end it is not really the voice type that counts! It is about how much the singer and the audience appreciate the voice! The mastery of the 4 vocal modes: Overdrive, Edge, Curbing and Neutral, vocal technique, breathing technique, breath support, enunciation, the ability to paint a picture with your voice("Impressionistic voice", as if you were watching a movie), a voice full of expression that can inspire people! And, yes, the physical appearance is also important for singers! Charisma etc... My favorite female Japanese singer is Kanazawa Akiko! I have listened to a lot of recordings where she is the main singer! Imho, everything she has sung is worth listening to! But, there are a lot of other good singers! Have a wonderful day!

Yeah I do find it to be a "gray area" whether or not we should be using "lyric" or "dramatic" to describe pop voices because there is a part of me that thinks that they'd be too broad of categories. Some lyric voices sing with so much vocal distortion (the "belt" style) that they can be confused with dramatics. Some dramatic voices can choose to sing super light, bright, and airy on purpose for style and they may be confused with more lyrical voices. That's why it's extremely hard to tell which EXACT voice type someone is within the fact system. Even using slightly broader and less complicated terms such as "baritone" or "soprano" those can also be very vague terms sometimes when applied to contemporary singers.
@mingisfixon645210 ай бұрын
(I'm bored so this is gonna be lengthy 😂) I think I'm a good example of this, based my years of analysing my voice and comparing it to other male singers, I'm a very high Baritone (I forgot what the term would be in classical) and I sound very Tenorish, especially bcuz I like to lighten my voice more than my natural weight and tone, at times (for ease and style). However, when you hesr me belt and mix with a more normal technique, I still sound Tenorish, but everything sounds higher in my voice when compared side-by-side to a true Tenor. Bcuz of my high Tessitura and obsession with belting when I started out learning to sing, my lows have been and are noticably weaker than most Baritones since I almost never use them below a C3. A side-by-side comparison with a Tenor would let you know that I have more natural ease, but am just very underdevloped. (Recently I began training my lows tho bcuz I dont like how uncomfortable they feel to use) All of this together just makes ppl think I'm a Tenor, but I've tried singing intermidiate songs in both a Tenor key and a Baritone key. In a Tenor key, it sounds and feels like Im just going too high and out of my range all the time, but in a Baritone key, everything sounds and feels more natural. Currently, my range is G#2/A2 - A4 - A5/Bb5. Low note issues begin for me at C3 and I dont rlly feel good singing below Bb2. B3/C4 feels like the beginning of my belts and Issues begin when I get to E4 but I can keep a descent vibrato up to F4, sometimes F#4. G4 is very doable as long as there's no vibrato and G#4 is difficult to sustain. My A4s are more concistent now but the tone sounds a lot more strained and undeveloped compared to the notes below it. I have reached that Bb4 to C#5 range before but Bb4 and B4 I can only reach in certain songs, while doing very very specific techniques (Theres not flexibility). If I try to hold them for more than half a second, u hear how overly strained they are. Its been over a year or so since Ive sung above B4, and those times where just one-offs where I did some over pushed, and strained techniques. Just pure tension, not real singing. In Head voice, issues begin and C5 and I only feel comfortable up to D5. Above that, I can still do a fairly ok vibrato, as well as some scream-like techniques (Exo's Chen can do this, but he actually sounds like he's trained with it, lmao) that mimic Sopranos, but they're not comfortable and I prefer not to sing in that range for actual vocal performances since the strain and tensiom is very apparent for listeners and it just feels like showing of range, instead of being tasteful.

Is Dia(ex kiss and cry) high soprano?
@justdb4 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Listen to her "Let It Go" cover and you will notice she sounds so much like Hyolyn. What is funny is that both Hyolyn and DIA are in the same vocal tier of being P-G. Also, listen to her solo work, and you'll really hear she sounds so much like Hyolyn.

@KittyTsundere Жыл бұрын
It's about similar to women/females (and the definitions do fairly apply to these subtypes except make them about men) except it's tenors, baritones, and basses for males. Tenors: -High tenors (eg Ryeowook (SuJu), Mitch (Pentatonix), maybe Haechan (NCT)) -Light tenors (basically the majority of KPOP male idols and male Western pop singers) -Medium tenors (eg Park Hyoshin, V (BTS)) -Low tenors (eg Hwanhee (Fly to the Sky), Sam Smith maybe) Baritones: -High baritones (eg Scott Hoying (Pentatonix), John Legend) -Low baritones (eg Avi Kaplan (Pentatonix) maybe) Bass (I actually don't know any good examples from the top of my head)

@@vampiregaming9820 Hey there! I’m doing pretty good despite also being busy actually, and going on with my life. Graduated from grad school about 7 months ago with a Masters, turned 25 last month, and adulting rn with a full-time job, living on my own, and a boyfriend. 🤗 I am still working on a couple of projects, but it’s on-and-off due to real life priorities.

Also to add, a misconception is that the most common voice type for men is baritone when it’s really not (it’s tenor actually). Just like how many sopranos conceive themselves as “altos” (when alto by itself is just a choral role based on range and not necessarily true voice type and contralto is most rare), many of these men who consider themselves as “baritones” haven’t really explored the true potential of the upper part of their range yet a la they’re untrained or lazy tenors lol.

@@KittyTsundere i think v bts belongs to light tenor because of how thin he sounds without his weird vowel shaping, if u watch his old clips when he has yet develop that issue his voice was super thin

Subtypes such lyric or dramatic can most definitely be used outside of classically trained singers. It may have originated there but it refers to qualities of the voice that can be heard in any well developed voice.😂 lets not spread misinformation

@@Oliver-uz1fsI agree, seohyun can sound cute when she uses that thin, bright approach with a very raised larynx and nasality but it’s artificial. And even then she still sounded less small than NingNing and Ben. When Seohyun belted on mask singer and the musical she sounded like a normal soprano.
