On February 24th, 2023, Eyrin Kyriakidi discussed the concept of femininity and its links to gender-based violence in the North Korean context.
While North Korea has rightfully been crowned the most secluded country in the world, reports of human rights abuse are plentiful. Amidst testimonies of internment camps, political violence and torture, gender rights and gender-based violence are frequently disregarded as a "first-world problem" or grouped together with other forms of government suppression. This lecture aims to induce a dialogue on gender-based violence and its links to the concept of femininity in North Korea by exploring the role of North Korean women in social, work, and military environments.
