In this video we will discuss the application of feminist theory in literature and in the broad field of literary criticism. Feminism as we all are aware is a socio-political movement that advocates social, political, economic and personal equality between sexes. Feminism is a long term movement and when we apply the ideas of feminism in the broad field of literary criticism, it helps us to uncover the underlying patriarchal ideology and traditional gender roles that justify the inequalities between sexes.

In the beginning of video I have provided a brief introduction of Feminism as socio-political movement. The term “Feminism” was coined by the French philosopher and radical socialist Charles Fourier in 1837. Then I have discussed the contribution of Marry Wollstonecraft in paving the way for modern feminism. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft published her groundbreaking book Vindication of the Rights of Woman, in which she argues that women should be eligible for education in the same way that men are.
Secondly I have discussed four waves of feminism respectively.
The first wave of feminism begins in 1820s and ends in 1940s.
The Second wave of feminism starts in 1960s until 1990s.
The third wave of feminism was continuation of second wave and starts in 1990s to 2000s.
The fourth wave started in 2012 and it is still in progress.
Finally I have discussed complex terminologies associated with the feminist criticism. I have provided a brief distinction between the word sex and gender. I have also discussed the term ecriture feminine and gynocriticism. Finally I have provided few questions that we ask when analyzing a literary work from feminist perspective.
