I have a friend who goes to those hate marches, I spoke with her to try to understand what people are thinking, and from what I understand: 1. before anything, for them it is a social gathering 2. The are indeed virtue signaling, moreover, whenever they encounter any evidence to show they are in fact supporting a terrible side (hamas) they are fast to dismiss it, because that would mean they have to accept that instead of being the heros they see themselves, they are infact this generation's Hitler's youth (I say this because of the racism against jews and calls to perform a genocide on Israeli people, not because the idea of supporting Palestine, unfortunately, those marches don't support Palestine, but demonise Israel and call for revenge) 3. Social pressure, if you dont go to those marches, you will be an outcast and have no friends, it is what everyone does and a way to socialise and say you are like everyone 4. In their environment, it is what "everyone thinks" and if everyone thinks something, it must be true 5. They are bombarded with extreme content in tik tok and spend many hours watching AI hamas generated content which they believe is true. 6. Massive ignorance about the facts, along with a deep desire to look clever, thus quoting something someone said to them, as though it is a fact without any knowledge whatsoever 7. Fear of standing against "what is cool" and being ans outcast 8. Utter lack of understanding of the impact their actions have on innocent people in their own country 9. Utter lack of understanding of the lack of impact of their actions on people in gaza 10. Huge gapping lack of world historical knowledge in general (not just about this conflict) 11. A deep desire to feel important 12. A very shallow social life, which offers no good means of meeting people for anything more than a fling (aka they are lonely and looking for friends)
