Gallagher stuff seems to be good everywhere. We have a brand here called Thunderbird that seems pretty good too. I have a small JVA unit that's made by Pakton who make the innards for a lot of fence units around the world. It seems to be pretty well made and you can get the circuit diagrams for them and spare parts. It did blow the output transformer after 5 years of use on a fence that has trees falling on it regularly. JVA upgraded the replacement transformer on that model and some others, so maybe it was a problem from the start. At least they were proactive about it like Gallagher is. I will say, though, you definitely want a reliable fence unit or a few spare working ones laying around. It's bad enough when the power goes out for a couple of hours, but if your one and only electric fence unit dies, you might not have a fence for days. You'd better hope your animals can't tell when the fence is off. Some of ours can and so can our neighbour's sheep. Pretty sure foxes, quolls, bears, dingos etc would be able to as well. I think you're on the right track with Gallagher stuff. Good luck with it. 👍

I forget when it happen, probably 4-6 years ago now, but gallagher bought the company Thunderbird. And Gallagher actually use one of their scales called the Gallagher W110 scale and it's just a Gallagherized Thunderbird model. Pakton is private labeled a few units here mostly sold by a fence company called Kencove Fence Systems. They also have private labeled a bunch of those Fault Finders here in the states for a few different companies. They seem to have a good reputation as well.

Is this 560 unit good for Hogs
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it's a 4 output joule unit, so it packs a decent punch. It really depends on how much fence you have and make sure your ground system is adequate. Other than that, it's a good stout unit with a good punch.

Just a question about grounding- I understand three rods 6-8ft long spaced 10 feet is the norm, but would galvanized pipe work for ground rods? I've got a number of spare galvanized pipe lying around that are almost 9 foot and I was curious to know if I could use them for the grounding system with my M560 instead of buying the rods.
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity

Hi, I know people that have done this. The only trouble I've heard people having is getting the pipe driven in far enough. As you drive the pipe into the ground, it'll fill up with dirt that starts making it harder and harder to get the pipe in further. You'll want to drive those in as deep as you can. If you can't get it into the ground but 4-5' just cut it in half, then go 10' away and drive the rest in. I would drive in 4-6 pieces of the galvanize pipe as deep into the ground as your can still spacing then 10' a part. The solid rods are usually easier to drive into the ground because you're not fighting the dirt that's going up into the pipe. They're also hollow vs solid like the galvanize ground rods are, so it may take more to do the same job as the solid rods.

I raise bison. It's near impossible to keep them out of the hay lot in the winter when there's 2nd cutting alfalfa. 5 strands of barbed doesn't do it. I want an electric charger that's just strong enough to zap them through their wool, knock them over for a moment, and cause them to leak a little pee at the same time. Enough to get their attention. No A/C power available, so it has to be a 12 volt charger (or 36 volts... 3 car batteries in series if needed, whatever) with lots of punch. Are the big Cyclops ones the way to go? I don't need years of reliability, just questionably dangerous levels of zap.
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cyclops would be a good option on a 12v unit, they go all the way up to 12 +/- joules on 12v, it's called the Cyclops Super model, make sure it's the 12v. Gallagher does make a 12v unit that's 18-28 joules, but they're expensive but reliable at the same. Look here at the cyclops super cyclopsfence.com/collections/battery-powered-energizers/products/cyclops-super-12-joule-200-acre-12v-dc-battery-powered-energizer They also make a Cyclops Brute that's 12v as well. It's really stout unit too. Just make sure you protect the unit from the weather and sunlight. Cyclops aren't really weatherproof from the rain and their plastic isn't the greatest over time, it'll crack from the sunlight beating on it. Over all, they're still a good brand.

@@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity thank you very much! I appreciate the guidance a bunch. Am I correct that to get a greater arc distance, to get the zap initiated, a fencer would need higher voltage... like beyond the 10K volts they're pretty much limited to now?

@@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity I see the Speedrite 18000i also. A little more $$ than the Cyclops, but higher joule also. Would that be a good choice? Any issue with running these units on a very short section of fence if needed?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlh7795 It's not really the arc distance that means it's strong. I've seen 10 joule units have a 1/4" spark and a 1 joule unit have a 1/4" spark, but the loudness and brightness of the spark from the 10 joule unit is a lot brighter and louder. Some really old solid state units from 30+ years ago were 10-12kv coming out and have 1/2" to 1" arc jump, but the arc was very thin and your couldn't run long distance with them or handle too much grass on the line, and that's why solid state units are really not made anymore and everything is low impedance nowadays.

Stay away from the speedrite stuff, overpriced hype. They do work, but they have plenty of issues. They're an expensive brand with expensive parts. Also, you'll probably run into issues since it's a large unit on a smaller fence. A handful of brands have this sorta issue, just some brands protect their units inside with better components and some other things or they are adaptive output units. Cyclops do have some things built into their units to protect the board from overheating and the capacitors. Cyclops aren't adaptive output units into you get into the Master & Boss models, but they're only 110/120v models. You could look at a gallagher MBS1800i MBS2800i, or is it MB1800i MB2800i, either way they have all that protection stuff built into it as well as being an adaptive output unit, plus they're very reliable and carry a longer warranty than Cyclops do. They're dual powered units and can run off of ac or dc. But they'll run a battery down pretty quick without the right wattage size solar panel, the same with the cyclops units. I think you would be better off with the cyclops or the bigger gallagher stuff.

will this M560 good for goats I have about 1 mile fence with 5 strands ?
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity
@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 2 жыл бұрын
It might, but goats really need at least 5-6 output joules minimum for them to really listen and respect the fence. The M560 is around 3.5-4 output joules and the M800 is closer to 5.9 output joules. So the M800 world be a better solution for goats

How many volts does the m560 put out? I'm sick of fixing my old international (zereba 100mile). I have 40 acres. Perimeter is 5 strand barb with 1 hot. Then at any given time within that I have 3 or 4, 1 acre lots with 3 strand polywire that I rotational move. One for goats, one for hogs and one for cows. The old international/zereba packs a punch and keeps everyone in but the damn thing needs repaired yearly. Last repair cost me $125. Unfortunately it was repaired without a quote otherwise I would have tossed it last year. Now it's still clicking but shows 0 volts with fence connected. When you disconnect the fence it shows 10,000+.

Hi, the M360, M560, M800 all put out the same voltage, 8,000+ volts. The zareba/international 100 mile are a 6 output joule unit. The closest one by gallagher is the M800. The M800 is 8 stored joules 5.9 output joules. The M560 is 5.6 stored joules and around 4 output joules. The M360 is 3.6 stored joules and around 2 or so output.

@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity 3 жыл бұрын
For goats, it's recommended to have at least 5 joules, so the M800 is what I would recommend. It'll do fine for the hogs and cows easily. On the unit you have, you might have a bad short or something on the fence that's dragging it down. Usually on those 100 mile type units, when they click, they'll either put out enough kv or nothing at all with the fence disconnected. So I'm wondering if there's not singing shorting out on the fence somewhere. Do you happen to own one of those fault finder type fever testers or just a regular kv only fence tester.

I can actually install a gallagher transformer into those 100 mile units and it'll last a lot longer. The transformers on those 100-200 mile zareba type units are their weak point. Stick a better quality transformer into it, and it'll last a lot longer excluding lightning.

I walked the fence line several times looking for a short. Finally I hooked up a little 2 mile patriot charger that I have and got spark on all the fence with it. We are still on winter paddock so only using it on single strand for cows on 1.5 acre. I have no idea what's going on with the international 5000.
