I think I landed a "good" one of these. I got the seafoam green one w/ the matching headstock and it's perfect. I'm usually cautious w/ Fender QC, but when you get a good one, they are truly fantastic.

It's nice to finally have an instrument with a bone nut. Very rich sound! My first bass

My first bass was a used 72 Fender Jazz bass I bought in like 1982. I was a Jazz guy for a while then became a P bass guy for a long time. Now at 57, I'm loving the Jazz bass again. I think I like a Jazz at home playing by myself and a P bass with a band.

I've always preferred the J tone to the P just a little. As you point out Anthony, the J bass has 3 distinctive voices and to my ears the J bass has a bit smoother tone. I usually run my J bass 75/25 neck to bridge pickup blend which adds a bit of bridge pup midrange. Thanks Anthony

As I get older, I continue to increasingly prefer the inherent warmth and smoothness of a Jazz Bass to the more brutal punch of a Precision.

Me too. I used to be a P bass guy. Now I can’t get enough of the Jazz Bass.

I'd interpret the neck j-bass pickup vs the p-bass as being very similar with the j-pickup having a slightly hollower and loose tone, whereas the p-bass has a slightly thicker and grindy tone. I like both and use them pretty much interchangeably. Of course, this is just an "average" because there is going to be variation with different pickup heights and overwind/underwind/wire gauge as well. For instance, the neck pickup on on my 70s j-bass is rounder and less sharp than the neck pickup on my 61 reissue j-bass neck pickup, which is not quite as full, but more punchy/focused. When recording, I almost always use the neck pickup soloed on my 61 reissue j-bass. There is something about that specific bass and pickup that translates really well to recordings. I've gotten tons of compliments on that recorded tone.

Anthony, it's all about pickup location. The neck pickup on a Jazz is reminiscent of a Precision because the pickup is in roughly the same spot ( maybe slight further toward the neck heel). If you take a split coil Precision pickup and put it back near the bridge, it sounds a lot like a Jazz bridge pickup. It's all about pickup location ( slight differences between single coil vs split coil notwithstanding ). I was all over Jazz basses until I tried my first Precision, then it was game over. I didn't know what I'd been missing. Jazz bass = slapped in the face with a wet lettuce by a 100lb weakling wearing ballet slippers. Precision = kicked up the backside by a weightlifter wearing size 15 army boots. 😁

I think the difference between a jazz bass neck pickup tone and a Pbass tone to my ears has to do with the mids. Everytime I play a Jazz bass what sticks out to me is how scooped the mids are even on the neck pickup position theres still alot more snap than one would get on a precision bass and it’s due to the mid scoop. To me a precision bass has more of an Arch on the mids with makes it more pointy rather than scooped which to my ear cuts better in a mix. The precision bass to me also has a lot more body on the low end than a jazz bass which is why i prefer a precision bass for 90% of what i do but theres that 10% where a jazz bass is simply a must.

Of the 2020 60th Anniversary jazz model or this new American Vintage II 66' jazz bass, which did you prefer since you had a chance to play both?
@EmpireMusicPgh2 жыл бұрын
It's been a while on the 60th. So an accurate comparison would be tough for me to give from memory. I'm REALLY digging the Vintage II's though. Very cool basses... tons of vintage appeal. Thanks for watching - Anthony

@@EmpireMusicPgh Anthony if you had to pick between the vintage 2 jazz or the vintage 2 54 p bass which would you choose?
@johnsilver8059 Жыл бұрын
That would be my question as well since I own a 60th Anniversary Jazz and it’s my favorite bass. Other basses have come and gone, but that’s still here.

I have one and it is a fantastic instrument, but its Fender so QC isn't always the best

Agreed. One bass had a complete wad pickup. Next one had a hump in the neck. 3rd one had a huge gash in the neck pocket from routing.
