I love that you did the comparison through a clean amp with no effects. So many people do comparisons with distortion and effects and you really don’t get to hear the pickups at all. Perfect comparison. Texas Specials for me.

Thanks very much for watching and taking the time to comment. I agree - with many tests, there are so many different effects that you can't really hear the guitar. I do have another version of this video to show them with overdrive to satisfy that scenario, but for me clean is where it's at! In terms of the Texas Specials, they often get a horrible reputation, mostly through hearsay - yet I receive a lot of comments to say that they change their mind after watching my videos, so I think it's more about the right pickup for the right situation. Check out this video to anyone that says TS 'Don't sound like a Strat.' kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIaxpJmQjN2hgtU Thanks again!

The 69 has a certain degree of airiness, or cloudiness, the best I can describe. Some people like that. Personally for me I find the clarity and wider balanced range in the Fat 50s appealing. The Texas has a mid-range presence that sounds cosy on clean tones, best played w a comforting cup of hot chocolate beside. Does reasonably well on clarity too. My vote goes to the Fat50s and Texas. Thanks you for your contribution to the strat community!

Thanks for watching 👍I find that for live work, the TS have more presence and bite. I can't get the '69s to work with vintage Fender amps - but better with modern, more neutral amps like my Artisan 30. The Fat 50s are nice for studio work, as they are more 'Stratty' and easier to get traditional sounds from (well balanced). Thanks again 🎸

The 69ers sounded a little bit thin/weak to me and the Fat 50s still have a warmth to the tone i like in Strats. Your pickingstyle is very cool by the way. Great to watch a clip without big amounts of delay and overdrive so the character of each pickup was outstanding. 🙂👍 Greetings from Germany

Thank you for the comparisons. I've had Fat 50s in one Strat before and I still prefer the '69 pickups to anything else. With the Fat 50s, I could not get used to how they sounded above the 12th fret on the bigger strings. In one particular Strat I have (Hendrix Mexican Strat) I replaced the Pure Vintage 65s with custom shop '69s and the bridge and middle combination is just about the cleanest tone I've ever heard. I'm wondering if perhaps the amp volume should be increased for the '69s since they have a weaker output in order to make a fair comparison with the Fat 50s and Texas Specials.

Thanks for watching, Kenneth. I think it really does depend on the pickup position and kind of gain level, playing attack style, and so many factors. That's what gives us the 'feel' I suppose. I think my favourite can vary between switch positions, the song and my mood! With regards to the volume, while it's a good point, the fairest way to 'back to back' is to not touch anything. Sort of like rolling of the treble a bit because one set has a glassy bridge pickup for example. It's more about showing a baseline than showing each at their optimal settings. That being said, I have just made a follow up with a gain pedal added to see how the c1.5k resistance drives the circuitry. Thanks again! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nX6vnp2Hgtt_l7M

Definitely preferred the Fat 50's. They just had a more airy responsiveness across frequencies to sound most natural. 69's sounded decent but more pushed/focused or something. I didn't like the Texas Specials much due to the lack of top frequencies (felt like a blanket over the tone). I imagine those are meant to push an amp driven harder, so focus more on mids like a Tube Screamer would, but I'd rather just get that from a pedal and have the full frequency range. Good comparison

Hi Michael, many thanks for watching, and indeed for taking the time to comment. I actually use the MK a lot for my recording with The Atlantic Project, and the Fat 50's for my Stuart Rolfe/Daylight Stealers records. Horses for courses, as they say! With regards to the Lace Sensors, I've had quite a few Strat Plus/Deluxes over the years, and the Golds are my favourite. The only Lace equipped Strat I currently own is the early Clapton Strat (featured on my channel), which has the 3 Golds. I really like the Laces. Especially for live performance. Powerful, quiet and relatively 'Stratty.' No harm at all in switching out. The Strat Pluses are beautifully made guitars (see my ride across the river vid for sound). They're supposedly becoming more collectible now, so you might want to go for a loaded pickguard to preserve all the original electronics for later. One things for sure - a Strat Plus with TS pickups would be a beauty! 😃👍🎸

I got an FSR (MIM) "tribute" to the Black Strat that came with Fat 50s pickups and it sounds fantastic. The chime that comes from the neck pickup is incredible. They're in GuitarGuitar (UK) for about £750-850, and was the first Fender I bought. It might be the last, or last strat, I get.

They sounded almost the same to me, as far as tone is concerned. Third one was a little more plucky, an the second one was just the faintest bit smoother (but not smooth like other 60's type pickups)... I'm still torn here, I have to make a decision between the 50s and the 69s. But I really liked your tunes.

Thanks for watching. To be honest, the differences are subtle. I'd argue that the greatest differences are actually most evident when 2 pickups are used together. From a recording and live performance point of view, I'd say that the higher output of the 50's actually translates into a 'Strattier' sound. The 69s to my ears tend to be a bit thinner, edgier and raw by comparison. But as you say, the differences are minor and once pick attack, amps and any effects come into play, there's really not a lot in it. Not as black & white at people like to make out sometimes!🎸

@@williamnichols6253 I think for a RHCP sort of sound, I'd actually be more inclined to go with the 69s. Occasionally, CS will spec a guitar with a mixture (50's neck, 69 mid and a Texas Special bridge for the best overall mix, but as a set, I'd go 69's I think.

@@dylansmithguitarist3843 Hi Dylan, thanks for the response. I have the 57/62 on the three Fender AVRI I own, I’m thinking about trying something new and I’m pondering between those three pickups. @@password_xy I like the TS a lot. I gigged for years with an SRV Strat (alder body, TS pickups). Check out my SRV vid. I don't really use the bridge pickup much on its own, but mostly in conjunction with the middle pickup. Check out my Redbud Tree video to see how 'Stratty' that sounds. I've got a strat with Texas Specials and while it does sound good on it's own it's impossible to be heard in a band context. I've recently tried 2 more strats to compare and both of them sounded much better and had presence in the mix when compared to my Texas Special pickups. The 2 other guitars I tried were an American Fender Stratocaster and an Indonesian Squier Stratocaster and those 2 shared more similarities in tone than my Mexican Fender Roadhouse Strat. When a Squier sounds better than a Fender I guess this Texas Special pickups are just not for what I want to do with the guitar. Again, the cleans sound amazing but without anything else in the mix that would get in the way, and anything seems to get in the way. If you want to play in a band and be heard I recomend anything other than Texas Specials

You even matched visually each guitar with its appropriate pickups: The red one 50s and Hank Marvin, or blues style, and the white body one psychedelic rock era. All are great and workable. Fats are very round, 69ers clean, sizzly and constrained due to lower output, Specials have both that low middy body and high middy honk, the most aggressive of the three. All top.
