The owner went with the Avatar A50, and you can hear that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWfCpJJ6gtWiqMU From playing all these speakers in the room and playing much more than what you hear in this video, I see why people like the A50. It does a cool thing on cleans, and has a funky compressed sound when driven. The Veteran 30 and ET65 are a bit more versatile, without the speakers imposing their own overtones when driven. Put it this way - A50 if you're Tom Petty, ET65 if you're Mike Campbell.

Thanks for comparison! Could you suggest some speaker to increase a mid range and maybe allow a bit earlier breakup for my DRRI? Actually the breakup it's nice to have, but the midrange is a main target. I like my DRRI, but the scooped Jensen sounds boom and harsh, always I reduce the base in around 2 and half, but again - where is the mid range. I already thinking about install the 100 KA pot in addition to 6.8K resistor to allow mid tone settings, but maybe the speaker replacement can provide the midrange acoustically, I don't know. What you suggest? Thanks!

I can see why. It is closest to the Jensen but not as bright. I preferred the 65 or 30. Not as bright a tad darker but I think the 65 had a bit more clarity than the 30. Then again, that 50 was pristine as a much better sounding amp that is still making me rethink my 1st choices.

I like the consistency of the Veteran 30. It’s consistently not harsh and smoother than the other 3, to my ears. The avatar seemed very bright on an already bright amp. I have been plugging into the vibrato channel 2 on my drri because it’s less bright since it’s minus -6 db from channel 1. Not sure if it bypass bright cap but seems to level things and take off some top end.

I am running two Fender DRRI's, one is stock/clean (Black) and one I bought used modded (Brown) by a Harp player to breakup early and is a bit dirty. The stock has a "Special Design Jensen" and the dirty has a "Eminence Vintage" that breaks up around 3 and is louder than the stock model that starts breakup around 5. I have had thoughts to make the stock model even cleaner with a speaker change but do not know a lot about that stuff so this Video is a great introduction. I have had recommendations for a high output JBL.

Yeah, the WGS ET65 would be my choice for an all around speaker. That's a closed back cab? which definitely rounds out the sound. Top end is more reserved and the lows enhanced but the sound, especially on your last demo (rockin' chords) really showed off the WGS speakers.

Nice job, thanks for doing this. That bright Avatar does sound great, but part of it has to be the cabinet, too? I really liked the Veteran... listen to the punchy chords in the last segment, Veteran and Avatar are sound closer to each other than in other segments.

The warehouse speakers were the winner for me. The 65 if I had to choose. The alnico gave that mid punch sparkle which is great! But not in this situation. The stock emi was horrible, and I was a big fan of the legend series before WGS came along.

Yeah, the A50 is a very cool sound. Much more upper mid-range focused than the more traditional "Fender" speakers. Has a less liquid low end than the ET65 or G12C, different high frequency emphasis. The owner chose an A50 after hearing this, so one will be here soon to live in this DR. So I think everyone can agree that while there are multiple great choices for this amp, the stock Eminence isn't one (neither is the stock C12K in more recent RIs but I'll show that later). Note: I am not slamming Eminence. They make many many great sounding speakers, including great ones for DRs. Just not the one Fender contacted them to make.

The Eminence Texas Heat, GA12-SC64, EM12 & Weber 12F125 30 watt and 12F150 50 watt are all killer choices for these amps(currently own all of them). If cost is a huge factor, the Texas Heat can be had for a song used. Very efficient/loud and tonally fitting the Blackface vibe. Weber builds killer stuff and do a fantastic job of building a vintage voiced speaker, I prefer the 12F150 in DR’s. Even the Italian Jensen C12N is good IMO, much much much better than the C12K.

Hey! I just "discovered" you this afternoon. Totally great content. I have been working on all sorts of electronics for about 30 years including fixing guitar and bass amps for about 10 years. Your channel is a delight! As far as the thumbs downs go, there are a lot of broken people out there - I think some folks follow channels and give thumbs down on everything because of some sort of beef. Maybe think of it like "At least they care enough to show up" Also, I hear that thumbs down are still interaction and is viewed as being a good thing for the algorithm.

Awesome comparison. I like speakers that are warm when played clean in general like you have in the 2x12, but I rarely like speakers with those attributes when being pushed hard with a DS-1. The speaker in the middle is the kind where I like pushing it hard, reminds me of the tone of my vintage Jensen C12r. The eminence just sounds tired from too much playing, probably a model they used a lot of cheap adhesives breaking down now. Needs a solid recone job, preferably a hempopotamus cone.

I am wondering if you can help me? I currently looking to buy a used Mesa Dual Rectifier as it has been on my bucket-list for over twenty years. Yes, I'm aware that most techs hate working on boogies, but how difficult is it to maintain/repair and find parts for this specific model? I'm specifically looking to get either a two channel revisions "F" OR "G," or the first generation 3 channel version (not the multi-watt). From what I understand, It can be difficult to get schematics from boogie, but seeing how the preamp design is the same as a Soldano SLO 100, would it still be difficult to access the design layout? Basically, what I'm asking is how much of a risk would it be to buy one used? Thank you, p.s. I just found your channel & I love it. I'll be sure to like and subscribe.
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 3 жыл бұрын
No risk of it being unserviceable, though have it checked out by a good tech while the optocouplers used for switching are still available. Those are obsolete components that won't be around much longer. And expect it to need service - Mesa does a lot of really dumb things that nuke diodes, use coupling caps with too low a DC voltage rating, really poor quality pots, etc. They aren't well built or "designed" and they are expensive to service, but they can be serviced. They are no better than a Peavy 5150 or 6150 (whatever they changed the model number to) but they cost a lot more.

Funny as I have been a Fender Amp guy since my first Twin (70's) however I have had some recent Fender's I have been disappointed with. I had GB Model crap out in the first month but it was replaced. Also a newer low use DRRI that developed issues (heats up and loses volume) fixed twice now. I do have a Mesa Mark V 35 that I love now for all it does. My current Twin is a special anniversary blond issue that does sound incredible for my cleans.

The Avatar really does sound good with a DR for an awful lot of stuff. But it's very much a "character" speaker. The two WGS are more versatile, and can sound more like the Avatar with different knob settings. I explained it to someone as "The Avatar is great for Tom Petty but Mike Campbell wouldn't always dig it." Also note that with either of the WGS speakers each speaker was getting half of the amp's output while the Avatar and stock were getting the full power. So that makes the Avatar a bit louder. And shames the stock speaker even more.

Hey man, I really appreciate your speaker comparison videos. I’m currently on a 77’ Princeton Reverb that I inherited and been playing for a couple years (love it) but picked up a Custom Deluxe RI (silverface) thats in the mail for a bit more headroom for gigging. I’ve played lots of DRRI’s, and I know the stock speaker has got to go and wondered if you’d have any input. I play a 335 knockoff, so buckers and semi hollow. In your comparison, the Warehous et65 sounds the best to me, or sounds like what I’m looking for, followed by the Veteran. I also watched your video on the WGS G12 and sounds good but hard to compare obviously. Long and the short is what is your take on speaker preference with your (I’m assuming) 335?? Thanks again man!
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Seth. Is it too late for you to send back the ‘68 and get a ‘65? The 68 just has so many problems. With a better speaker you’ll just hear the hiss more. As to the speaker for a DR and a 335 it depends on your stylistic tastes. Looking for Robben Ford or Jay Graydon or big clean with sparkle?

If you're going to obsess over the dislikes, KZbin is going to become hell for you. Having someone dislike your video isn't necessary any form of useful criticism. For all any of us know, someone gave you the thumbs down because your voice reminds them of a someone they hate. Right now, you're seeing below 2% dislikes to likes. I'm pretty sure that's a 98%+ which is about as close as you can come to being perfect. For those of us who like this subject, you content is first rate. i'm going to guess that some would prefer you switched the speaker into the same cab so it was a closer AB, and replicate mic placement easier, and get some youtuber coloured string lights in the background and some shelves with pedals, and racks with amp heads, a flashy intro clip, some inset shots, expensive camera gear, ring light, etc. - ha, jk! Likes from me all around though. I thought was a great vid. A50 was neat, but I've got to think that gets spikey and maybe starts to be problematic with some ods? I would love to try the A50, but have have a G12 heritage and it's got this "brittle" top end (awesome for clean with touch of break up, but fatiguing with crunchy rock tones; for me anyway) which I thought I was hearing on the A50, and it kind of gets annoying once your ear picks it up for the day. I actually liked the your V30, prob because I run my drri through a celstion V30 now, and like it. anyway great vid!
