I've had great times with Squiers, but I did get a CME exclusive that was flaw city. Neck pocket, scraping on the fretboard, stripped bridge screws, cheap alloy hardware (that last bit isn't in the same league as those build mistakes, but had to mention it, nonetheless.) Now, the pickups, the pickups sounded totally killer, so that was pretty redeeming but considering every other Squier I played or puchased of late, this thing was a total anomaly. Waited for over a year for it. WTF...

I bought a EOB Signature Strat from Sweetwater back in 2019. The shipping on it was delayed by 4 months because Sweetwater said the QC on ALL the units they received was so bad, they weren't going to sell them until Fender fixed them. That being said, the unit I received had no issues, but I'm glad Sweetwater didn't just push some piece of shit out the door and looked out for their customers.

When Jason plays that slow dive riff, makes my day. You guys keep getting guitars with issues 😢 for $1400 omggggg that’s horrible QC! When I tried a squire Bass VI in store out of the two the first one they handed to be was dead with frozen knobs.. and out of the 3 switches only one switch made a click noise in the amp I plugged into. Haha “let’s get ready to rumble” was needed for the roast segment. Are they going the gibson route of higher cost more QC issues? It really feels like it’s a real trend for them.

I'm 100% in agreement with you when it comes to these $1,200-1,400 mim Fenders compared to the Squier Classic Vibe/40th Anniversary series for nearly a thousand dollars less. I have a CV Jazzmaster CME in purple metallic and it is as nice as some mim guitars - if not nicer with a few mods. I've also played the 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster and it is a great guitar - I really like the satin finish and feel, not to mention the aged hardware and maple fretboard. It is crazy that so many people have been having these qc issues with the goldfoil series across the board. I saw a review of the Jazz Bass where the pickup was so far off the low e string was inaudible. Hopefully Fender will get their shit together because I actually do really like the concept behind this series.

Honestly this is the first honest review I've maybe ever seen. The old AV, AVRI and CS jazzmaster are the real deal, some models since then are decent and the pickups can always be swapped out. Most of the shit they release is utter garbage. Most KZbinrs will give a positive review to every guitar released after just doing cheesy blues licks, leaving the tone all the way up on the lead circuit, making the guitar sound like a strat with their butt rock amp and pedal sound.

When I saw these guitars I though "wow... it's almost as if Fender looked on the forums and saw the custom Marauder style creation that I had Ceccarini guitars build for me and used it as inspiration..." Ebony 12" fretboard.... check. Blocks/binding.... check. Jag pickup switching.... check. Colour matched body and headstock.... check. 3 pickups.... check. Main differences being mine has 2 Jazzmaster pickups and a lipstick, nitro finish, a rhythm circuit, wood scratch and control plates that I shellac polished myself, Schaller F-style tuners and a Stetsbar vibrato. All in it cost me less than these do (OK I had to assemble it myself, but still). Also I think they were looking at the old Hofner 175s and 176s (3 mini humbuckers and fancy neck). And Jamie Hince's modded Hofner Galaxies for the Bigsby. It's a killer idea - but marred in final execution, possibly worthwhile for the neck alone. It's interesting that Fender is clearly looking to us modders and custom builders for inspiration. Just wish they could pull the finished product off as well. I've only ever bought one Fender new - a HH 60s Classic MIJ JM with Cunifes last year - it was awesome. My old MIMs and CIJs are fine too. So something is clearly going wrong.

Great review and I feel the pain. I bought the Jazzmaster, also in gold, and got one that was set up well and without any major playability issues. I like the neck, bogs y is ok, pickups are weak and likely will replace. The paint on the headstock looks like it was applied as a decal and between the tuners on the headstock mine looks like it wasn’t laid flat and is warped. Almost like it was folded over. Insane that it made it through quality control but I’m happy enough that I won’t return. Just won’t be buying anything else direct from Fender.

Great vid! How..... how was that bridge pickup allowed to leave that factory? That's just pathetically sad, especially given the price. A hindred dollar guitar would still be expected to have all of the pickups working. Also, can't stand the fact that these are gold foils in COSMETICS ONLY. Not even single coils, let alone singke coils with the traditional gold foil magnets that give them their traditional, unique tone. Just stupid. I've had a similar experience. A couple of years ago, I wanted to get one of those Fender FSR Telecaster, with the flame top and HH setup. I got one where the volume would only work when set at 3, even after cleaning, working it, etc. So, I exchanged it for another one. They gave me another, and as soon as I played it, it just made this harsh popping sound, and then you might hear a hint of the note. It was out of phase, had a cracked lead, wouldn't intonate, and had the worst frets. Also, the fretboard was dry and cracking at the nut. I gave up on it. I have had great luck with the Am Pro 2 and Ultra lines though.

Dylan Talks Tone also said they’re not legit gold foils and are simply meant to look like them. He explained why on his channel. So it’s just a marketing gimmick. I don’t know how they keep calling them that and you have to read the fine print to find out. Pretty crappy thing to do instead of just making them legit Gold Foils and actually doing something unique. I haven’t seen legit Gold Foils outside of vintage guitars. I bet the real deal would sell like crazy. Mini hums are a dime a dozen. Why would they just stick a decorative cover on top to try fooling the consumer? Cause countless people thought they were legit until reviewers took them apart upon delivery. Come on Fender. Even Gibson wouldn’t do something like that!

This is the real issue at hand. Workers build these guitars, not companies or brands. The logo on the headstock is only worth the people that logo represents. Workers of the world... UNITE.

This seems to happens when Fender goes away from there standard lines. Look up the Fender Cabronita Tele for example

Not that your integrity has ever been called into question, but it is nice to see it constantly being proven reliable and true. While the playing may not have been fun for you, the video was definitely entertaining.

There was a bass channel that had a pretty negative review of the gold foil model, starting with the fact that the strings weren't aligned with THE PICKUP.

Just wondering, did you get this guitar from sweetwater? I noticed you used their page for reference in the video? I ask because I've recently had an issue with getting a $1000+ guitar that came in bad condition saying it passed the 55 point inspection. Love your videos by the way. I've been interested in trying out a jazzmaster which lead me to your many review videos on different jazzmasters

Seems like a lesson in not buying direct from Fender. Wow that was tough to watch (but still entertaining, oddly). Do you think the 12-inch radius itself threw the string spacings off? Or was it just someone having a really bad day at the Fender factory

Love the honesty here. As a long time Fender fan I want to love the gold foil series, but have heard almost nothing positive. It seems like anymore you have to spend at least $1800-2000 to get the quality you used to get. Also can’t agree more on the greatness of Sweetwater. I’m new to your channel so maybe you’ve already done this, but a comparison on the Electric Amps vs. the UK Matamp would be awesome. Would also like to hear those bass rigs more. 🙂 Thanks!

The Deluxe Series Cyclone is the best. Texas Special in the neck, and Atomic HB in the bridge, three position switch. Simple, great tones.

If you make a custom edition guitar with a goldfoil instead of a jazzmaster pickup what do people expect? At least the pickup has to be as it looks, right? At the very start it feels prety wrong for me. And i don’t have any problems with mini humbuckers. But dude! There isn’t enough confusion with the jazzmaster pickups? Why?!
