I overhauled a Fender Japan Stratocaster by polishing the parts, replacing the frets, and replacing the nut.
It was made in 1982, so it's 39 years old.
I was able to touch this precious Japanese guitar.

Watching these videos is both relaxing and mesmerizing. Makes me wonder how much time is spent on the lovely rehab? Here in the US- if you could even find anyone to do this sort of meticulous work- it would cost thou$and$..

Great work! You really should use a nitrile gloves when working with solvents. A small percentage does absorb through the skin and repeated exposure over the long term will affect the liver. That's why so many old guys who sprayed Lacquer doing cabinetry back in the day all died so young, they'd wash their hands everyday with lacquer thinner and over several years destroyed their livers prematurely. 🤘🏻🎶

An incredible job. If you ever have time to answer questions, please feel free to ignore everything I ask, I'm not sensitive. Anyone else wanting to weigh in on this, I appreciate it. I'm relatively new to guitars (last 4yrs), so I'm looking to learn. 1. Why do you choose to restore the original nuts (when possible), as opposed to using aftermarket graphtech nuts? 2. What is the most valuable instrument you've ever been entrusted to restore/fix? 3. Do you have a favorite brand regarding quality & attention to detail? Perhaps a top 3? Any mainstream brands, or are they all boutique? 4. What is your personal opinion on relic'ing - meaning, if you were to choose a custom guitar, would you prefer relic or new? I don't expect you to judge people's decisions, just what you prefer personally. I'm on board with the thought that relic'ing is just fake hipster 'authenticism'. However, I notice some of the best guitarists & luthiers will really appreciate a properly relic'd guitar. For the neck, I understand the worked-in feel, but all the 'damage' seems insincere & unnecessary. It seems to be a battle between a worked-in feel & "stolen valor" appearance. I appreciate the opinions of experts so maybe I'll be convinced someday to appreciate relics more.
@Andybassguitar
@Andybassguitar 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I don't understand English very well, so I may not fully understand your question, but I will try to answer. 1. are aftermarket graphtech nuts the nuts with grooves cut in them that are commercially available? If so, it would be ideal to make your own, considering the width of the neck. 2. The most valuable instruments I have worked on are 70's jazz basses and 70's Rickenbackers. I don't pay much attention to them. 3. I like ESP's Navigator as a manufacturer's product. It may be custom made, but I like Brillbate's BR replica best. I think it's a great guitar. 4. This question is a matter of taste, so I think it can go either way. If I think a new guitar is cool, I'll buy it, and if I think a relic guitar is cool, I'll buy it. I don't dislike Relic. I do it too. I think it's okay to decide what you like based on how it looks. My favorite kind of relic is a relic where only the screw heads are rusted and the parts work like new. If you just rust all the parts, it is not a relic. You are just wearing out the guitar. It's all a matter of personal preference, and what you are willing to pay for is up to you. I would be happy if you share my obsession in that.
