I'm surprised by how much more clarity I hear in the JMJ - feels like a more usable tone in a way that I was not expecting. Great comparison!

Thanks a lot for this video. Both sound great but I think I prefer the slightly chunkier neck on the JMJ

These short scale basses are so much fun to play. I just purchased a Sterling Stingray SS-4. Been playing 2 hours per day for 3 months. (I'm a guitar player) so it was a more natural transition. I actually preferred the tone on the Red Bass in this video. Enjoyed your performance. oNe LovE from NYC

I haven't done too much research on these but these are the two bass' I'm considering. I wouldn't say the width or the thickness of the neck is a dealbreaker for me, but frets are. I'm not a fan of sharp. Does the JMJ have a more premium fretboard/fret feel?
@smbasscovers47763 жыл бұрын
I felt that the JMJ felt more ‘premium’ overall but I didn’t notice any issues with the fretwork on the player series. Sharp fret ends and dodgy fret levelling are more of a quality control issue so while mine was pretty good; I can’t comment on whether they’re all like that or if I just got lucky 😅

Great playing and great demo! With eyes closed, it would be hard to tell the difference, though the PJ has a deeper low end. Do you find big differences in the feel of the neck / playability?
@smbasscovers47763 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) The neck on the JMJ feels much more 'vintage' it's a fair bit thicker than the Player series neck and the width is wider at the nut. I prefer the JMJ personally but it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people would prefer the slimmer neck on the Player series

@@smbasscovers4776 Cool, thanks for the info! I've heard in some reviews that the PJ has a bit of neck dive to it. Have you noticed this to be more pronounced than with the JMJ? Your comparison is really the best one out there, since it shows how similar they are with flats on both... alas, it's a matter of personal preference and neck feeling, but no music stores are open at the moment! 😩
@smbasscovers47763 жыл бұрын
There’s a little bit of neck dive on the player but it’s not that bad. I wouldn’t say the neck dive on the JMJ is any worse than on my Jazz bass. Tbh I’d hardly noticed the neck dive on either of them until I picked them up to check after reading your comment 😂 I do have my strap fairly high so that’s probably helping to minimise the amount of neck dive but neither of them is anywhere near as bad as say a Gibson Thunderbird or SG for neck dive.

@@smbasscovers4776 Sorry to have brought it to your attention, but maybe it's a good excuse for even more gear.😂 Thanks for checking! Glad to know it isn't a real factor otherwise.

@bflo1000 I've never owned an SG bass and it's been a few years since I've had a go on one but I remember it being a comfortable bass to play. I'm a big fan of the sound of the old Gibson EB3 SG basses; I've thought about adding a mudbucker style pickup in the neck position of the JMJ to try and emulate some EB3 sounds.

The JMJ sounds better than the P/J setup. I was expecting to hear the P/J setup win, but honestly I love the tone coming from the JMJ. It is the winner!

which strings are used on both guitars?
@smbasscovers4776 Жыл бұрын
Was a long time ago when I recorded this but I’m 99% sure the Player PJ had 105-45 D’addario flats and the JMJ has 105-45 fender flats straight from the factory
@robertcrystals8 ай бұрын
The PJ seems to have dead spots with that E string kinda flattening out, where the JMJ is just solid all round.

I'm on the market right now, but noticed prices rose since yesterday 50 to 100. 100 more for American Performer, 50 on the rest. That really sucks.
@MrSparks543 жыл бұрын
To my ears the JMJ sounds better. I don't have a Player PJ but I do have a 2008 MIJ Mustang and a 1970 USA Mustang. The '70 definitely has a more vintage sound and every mm of the tone control makes a tone difference vs the basic 80% treble and 20% bass pots so common these days. I'll never part with the 70, it's a fabulous bass, sometimes I think it sounds more like a P bass than a P 😎
@smbasscovers47763 жыл бұрын
I definitely preferred the sound of the JMJ personally, it’s less boomy in the low end and it cuts through a live mix a lot better than the player. I haven’t been lucky enough to have a go on a 60/70’s mustang but I have tried an early 70’s musicmaster and that was a great little bass. Thanks for checking out the video 😁👍

Can't decide between this or a Jaz bass..... Guess I'll have to get both hahaha
@smbasscovers47762 жыл бұрын
I love the mustang but when I’m working away playing I usually take the jazz, the mustang has a great sound (particularly with flat wounds) but I find it a bit hard to get the variety of sounds I get out of the jazz. It’s a shame I can only take one bass with me as the mustang would be ideal as a second bass. So in summary yeah get both…and a p bass 😁😂🤣

I think the mustang is a short scale that I could like but I would have to use flats to have some feeling that it is still a bass. The shorts scales just don't compare to a long scale .

Player PJ. Way too much tone to let go. I even passed on the Performer(American Performer Mustang Bass) for this model, because of the three way switch, instead of only being able to turn up the pickups, instead of just plain engage them. Weird way, for a more expensive guitar, to play, IMO.
@johng28803 жыл бұрын
I replaced the 3 way switch on mine with a blend knob. It's a useful mod for me. The neck on these is just fantastic.
@smbasscovers47763 жыл бұрын
A blend knob would make a lot of sense to me on that bass, the selector switch is cool but it's a shame that it limits the ability to blend the two pickups. I toyed around with the idea of installing jazz bass style stacked knobs on the Player PJ so that I could have seperate control of the volume and tone for both pickups. I sold the PJ after I got the JMJ but it would have been a really cool bass to do some mods on 🤘😄

@@smbasscovers4776 I own 3 mustang pj's...let me just say, replacing the bridge pickup and the toggle switch is a necessity if you want it to be a quality performer, but the potential was there with all three to begin with
