Oh man! The tension exerted by those flats are going to tear that thing apart.

I just started playing a stand up bass. Works great at acoustic jams because it fills the room with sound around the other guitars but doesn't overpower like an electric bass would.

I gotta say... it has a lovely tone, especially with the flats.

I've got one and have gigged it plenty. I've had no issues with mine, at all. Plays as good as anything without a 50's spec P neck could. Taped flats would sound best, imo. However, it becomes even more useless acoustically. I have used mine completely acoustically for rehearsals and the only way to get volume out of it is by playing it with a pick with the bronze/phosphor rounds. Good enough for a completely unplugged jam with one guitar, but add anything else and you'll disappear.

Hello Dave, Love your video's and even though I am mostly self taught guitar/bass setup we agreeon nearly everything. I learned to adjust guitars and basses out of the frustration that most guitartech's at local music stores have no idea what they are doing. As for the kingman bass I do feelthe high tension of flat wounds could increase the banana neck. in my opinion a much better choice would be lighttension nylon flat wounds would be easier on the neck and have acoustic qualities desired. Labella nylon tapewounds would be my choice with great sound, slightly more tension than other nylons, and no fret ware. Brian Emrick from Ohio, USA.

I've played that bass live on a few occasions. Folk/ rock band. Had to do an equal amount that Dave did to get it to be playable though. I'm no guitar tech by any stretch of the imagination, I just sort of fucked around with the truss rod and shaved the bridge and it worked out. Ordinarily I'd just fuck everything up so I'd leave it up to people like Dave!! But I got lucky.

Although I'm not a fan of acoustic basses, I did play one of these for about an hour once and it plays well. It's basically a jazz bass neck with a seventies-era feel to it though it doesn't sound super acoustically.

MIssed the chat, but you've got my attention with the strings. I hated the phosphor bronze on my acoustic bass, definitely "clangy". I've wondered about tape wound on an acoustic too.

Yeah, those pins are a real pain. I had one acoustic bass where I would throw a washer on the string and then feed the strings through the big hole and out the string hole. Then they couldn't pop out lol. The pins were just for aesthetics after that.
@lepetitnabot6 жыл бұрын
I've looked at those many times and they're always humped up straight to hell even at the store. And yeah, bridge pins and bass strings = bad idea.

I have the Fender Dreadnought acoustic bass. It looks like this guitar but has a more basic neck. I hear some annoying rattling from inside the body when the lower strings are played. What could this be and how expensive of a repair would it be? I worry it might be the bracing.
@wyattsdad85616 жыл бұрын
I had one of those kingmans but it was a regular 6 string. It was a cool guitar. It sounded great plugged in, but unplugged it was really kinda thin sounding. There's times when I wished I kept it, but I sold it to buy my hd28. The original kingmans from the 60's had like a dowel that was connected to the neck somehow and went inside the body. You could see the dowel if you looked in the sound hole. Check out the original ones Dave, kinda cool.

I've got one of these. Neck is still great on it (knock on wood) Feels like an electric jazz bass in the left hand. Like all ABGs it doesn't project any deep low end unless you plug 'em in. Was thinking about putting some nylon tapewounds to get a mellower sound out of it. In playing 30 years I've never actually tried tapes. I'm not sure after watching this though. hmmm...

I have one of these that I bought new, has a big ol’ hard case. Still have the phosphor strings on it. Pickup sounds great, I’ll go with flats on it because the roundwounds are hideous. Jazz Bass profile on the neck, it’s a tall drink of water.

I have a shitty acoustic bass that needs stripping after being painted too many times. Most of that is done but then I need to sort the edges of the frets as you could cut slabs of cheese on those things. Gonna string it up with some black nylon strings & get my dub on! I love the sound of a great acoustic bass guitar (Violent Femmes and the Alice and Chains Nirvana MTV unplugged sessions back in the day). I personally prefer bronze on these babies. kzbin.info/aero/PLclODpQJhNz7vm19Ab3k31tUX7dncoup4 I bought a big bodied Epiphone El Caipitan that served me well to be loud enough to hang acoustically with an acoustic guitar player who played considerately with a mid picking attack and it was a great practice tool to not piss off neighbors in my apartment days.
