Got both, and the Rascal has more punch and boom!

The woolly tone of the Rascal is my vibe.

I prefer the fuller sound of the Rascal. I believe the Mustang is better as a guitar, suits the crankiness.

Oooh! I love both, but it's hard to deny that nice little Clank from the Fender Mustang!

I hear you. I titch distracting but I’ll bet it fits when surrounded by drums and guitar.

Just LOVE short & to the point videos. Prefer the Rascal for playing Jazz & improvisation. Prefer the Mustang for playing Rock.

The Rascal, and in my opinion it is not even close.

My votes: Neck pickup- Mustang, both-Rascal, bridge-definitely Rascal! I have heard that the Rascal really shines with flats. You should give that a try AMP! BTW, I am still gassing for a Rascal. The Mustang does sound great as well.

Unless you’re doing some funk/slap, Rascal has a better bass sound to me. The Mustang was almost honky in comparison.

I have a 2008 MIJ Mustang with the Duncan design p'up, I played it for years with my band. I got the Black Rascal 6 months ago, threw on a set of Labella 760F-MUS flats on it and I don't remember the last time I picked up the Mustang. I play in a blues band and the Rascal fits the genre better than any other bass I have except maybe my Aerodyne.

Good vid for the sound difference, and I’m leaning towards the thicker Rascal. How similar/different are the playing feel. I’ve read people say the Rascal feels as stiff as a full scale-is it different from the Mustang on that level?
@ampthebassplayer Жыл бұрын
They feel very different. The Rascal for the most part feels like a standard scale bass, especially because of the weight. The Mustang is significantly smaller feeling and lighter.
@beargonefission6160 The Rascal feels like standard scale and the Mustang feels like short scale. It could just be string gauge though. I don’t actually know what’s on the Mustang, but the Rascal has the stock strings on it.

the rascal smoked it! i've got one but man is it big and heavy - does not feel like a short scale at all...

I need a new bass to leave at work. We teach just about everything but focus on rock and metal so although I love the Rascal I think the brighter articulation of the Mustang works better for what I need.

The black one is boring in pictures but super nice in person. And the pick guard is divine. ❤

@@brianfrolo245 I personally hate black guitars. It's my anti colour. There's no guitar I've ever come across that I'd choose black as a finish. But to each their own.

The Rascal sounds meatier, thicker. Especially that bridge, it reminds me of classic rock. Almost like it has a little bit of pepper on it. I like it a lot. The Mustang, at least the P-Pickup, sounds like a P-Pickup (I think?), good note definition, the attack is pretty clear and bright. I totally understand why some folks want the P-Pickup sound for recording. The J-Pickup sounds kinda nasily and imo, not particularly impressive? Of course, that's a totally subjective impression. Different tones for different roles, I guess. I listened to this with Koss KSC75 w/ Yaxi Pads tho, and they do roll off in the subbass pretty hard, so you know, my listening equipment probably had a lot to do with my perception of the sounds.

Love your videos man, keep up the good work :D! Btw have you considered making an episode of "how to sound like" about John Entwistle? I feel like he is often overshadowed by Geddy Lee or Chris Squier when he was very important to the sound of the rock bass. Hell, he even helped develop the roundwound strings with rotosound because flat "didn't vibrate properly" and didn't give much "twang" as he used to say, because to him, treble was very important. His timbre was always pretty unique, the combination of distortion and cranking the treble gave him a guitarish sound. But I think most of his sound came from his fingers, he was called "Thunderfingers", a title he deserved. He plays fast, really really fast in a style he called "typewritting", a weid combination of plucking and tapping. Btw I've mostly been talking about his tone live. In studio he often used pretty standard equipment without the treble and stuff.
