I know it's a "Fender heresy", but I've always thought the white pickguard on sunburst is hideous. Makes every instrument look like a cheesy toy. Brown tortoise or black is the way to go.
@nicandknacksandseans
@nicandknacksandseans 5 жыл бұрын
John Richard well the pinstripe helps but overall you’re right. I wonder if it was a television thing. You know like tv white was sort of yellow so it didn’t shine. Maybe on old tv’s if you only had blacks and browns the color would sort of melt into the background, so you needed some sort of bright color to make the instrument distinct from the person holding it. I mean, that is my spurious, unresearched hypothesis, but it would make sense...
@nicandknacksandseans

Then again, I just said that they didn’t use white on those old tv’s, so maybe I’m just nuts...

bought a bass from Long & McQuade once and got the "free set up" it was so bad it inspired me to buy a bunch of tools, binge on your videos (and others), and learn how to do everything myself. Now I run a repair shop! You're the man, Dave. EDIT: pretty sure that's a pau ferro fretboard and that's why it looks so dry compared to rosewood (and it's probably a little dry). A lot of people seem to not like it, but I love the way it looks.

I went to my local guitar store to buy my first guitar (I'm 50+ years old and always wanted to learn to play). I asked the guy if they do set-ups, or if they could refer me to someone that can do it. His reply: "They come from the factory already set-up. You don't need to do anything." I said thanks and left - and I've never been back. If a local store can't offer better service than I can get online, why would I pay more for the item at the local store??

I purchased one of the MiM Classic 50's models they discontinued 3 or 4 years ago. Those have been give or take a grand of european money. I once saw a great one of these in a local shop for € 750,-- on a black friday sale (Yes, they do this in Germany, too. Because its an American brand). Mine I found in the spring this year in the clasdifieds of EBay, it was nearby, so I drove to the guy and had a close look at it. I was searching for a P-bass for a while, because I wanted my 1964 P l bought in 1980 to retire, l thought it was time. The 50's Classic in Fiesta Red with a scratchplate made of anodized aluminum and an all maple neck was great, and I took it for € 450,--. I asked the guy for a discount by promising to take the bass on stage next time- and to get him on the free entrance list. We sealed the deal. The P sure was not played a lot, came in mint condition, no frettwear, nothing, but the setup was ass. So I gave him a proper one (as seen on this channel). String height, neck relief and intonation (for the nation) was all l had to do. Not full 30 minutes, and ready to rock. Wow, this bass is all l could ask for. After l made the clearcoat on the neck a bit smooter with a 3M 800 grid sanding pad, the neck felt like the neck of my good old boy. The neck profile is as close as possible to the 1964 P. The only thing l might do is getting a new Pickup with more output, maybe a Quarterpounder. All I want to say is, that these MiM instruments are not only good enough to gig with, they are great instruments, and with a little luck you'll find yourself a gem.

I got a left handed player series Precision bass with a maple neck and it’s literally one of my favorite basses. All it needed was a little setup and it plays like a dream. Sounds killer too. I want the white one because of the Pau ferro board. I know everyone complains about the color of it but I found that putting the Dunlop lemon oil seriously helps darken it. Story time. I had brought my guitar in for a setup, and I think I also got my tuners changed to locking ones. Anyway I got the guitar back from the guy and stupidly I just brought it home WITHOUT PLAYING IT. I must’ve been really tired or rushed or something. Anyway I get home and take the guitar out of the case (ok, bag) and start playing around with it. And I realize that the strings are about a mile high. I obviously rush the guitar back to the guy and ask him what was wrong. He seemed confused but I eventually figured out that he had set the string height BY EYE and had it really high because that’s what players in my area apparently “liked”. I of course insist that he lower the trying height to something approaching reality, and this time, I watch him do it. Moral of the story is: if you get a setup, store setup or otherwise, PLAY THE INSTRUMENT before you take it home and insist that they do their jobs right. Save you heartache like this. Similarly play before you buy. Stuff like what’s in this video really sucks if you play guitar, but would rather leave the inner workings to someone else.

That's not rosewood it's pau ferro and I lemon oiled the daylights out of mine. 3 months later it needs to be re-oiled. I guess it's Fender's way to cut down on the use of rose wood due to world controversy. See Circle of Tone video on rosewood.
