I kmnow this will trigger a whole bunch of folks - I have both the US and SE Silver Sky (I also have a bunch of Mexican and American Fenders) - the PRS Silver Skys are the best "Strats" I have played. I in fact just sold a couple of US Fenders because they don't get played/gigged. The SE Silver Sky is astounding in it's quality and sound. I kinda don't get the hate on PRS - every guitar company and their dog have made a Strat copy - testament to the enduring and timeless design, but to deny that it can't be done better...especially at the SE price point is just burying ones head in the sand. This should be a challenge now for Fender to do better (although the Squier Classic series is pretty amazing). I don't care where a guitar is made and honestly the justification for the $1000-$2000 US guitar is getting hard when Indonesian and Chinese factories are putting out this quality.

I was guitar shopping, as an intermediate non professional player, for an electric guitar, mid - price range, meaning under a $1000. I play at home with a 15watt Vox and/or a DAW. (I am happy to own a Ibanez AS 120 vintage. But it’s hard to get to the high frets.) I was able to have shipped a number of guitars that i could easily return. I went through a Epiphone SG; a Gibson SG (used for $700); a Fender Player Lead III; a Yamaha Revstar standard (the $800 version): an Epiphone ES 335 (came with a busted tuner!); a Charvel Pro-mod DK 24; a Sire Larry Carlton S7; I also played in a shop all the Fender Players, Squires and imports that you could shake a stick at; and a PRS SE (not a silver star). All of theses axes were stiff, without personality, expensive for what they could and could not do and just did not feel like my guitar. (I grew up with a Cherry Red Les Paul, 1980’s model, so I have high expectations. Any body seen it? I sadly sold it in Chapel Hill NC in 1982.) Then I tried in a shop a $275 Ibanez GRGR221PA. It’s cheap; plays damn well for the price and the neck is SMOOTH AND VERY player friendly for me. I am stripping off the ugly fake Poplar Burl paint down to it’s original wood. Maybe I will upgrade it but probably not. So my point is: why pay close to a thousand bucks for a mediocre guitar when I can have a decent guitar for a third of the price of all those I tried? (esp. given today’s guitar technology.) Sure i would like a $3000 custom (NOT A $10,000 ONE!) but I am not even sure that would be worth it. Let the collectors collect and us homeboys grab a decent axe for a little money. I will wait around till something comes my way that is special and worth a bit of an investment. I would have liked to have tried a PRS SS but for $600 more than my Ibanez I am not sure if i would spring for it. Imports are kind of a luck of the draw. But I do appreciate PRS’s quality control and out of the box set up...which is surely missing in other imports! Getting a cheaper Fender with a tremolo that goes out of tune ALL THE TIME seems stupid to me.

I own a Player and a friend owns the Se. Hands down the Se is the better guitar out the box in a lot of ways and if I were buying in the market now it would have to be considered however, I brought my Player series for around 650 before the SE was even mentioned and whilst I had to give it of TLC it is a great guitar and a great modding platform. The SE is noticeable lighter because they use an alternative wood the the classic alder that the player uses whether that means much to you or not it is something to be considered. I agree that Pau Ferro looks and feels cheap however I got my player in Maple which isn’t even an option on the Se ( at least not yet). Not sure what this guy was talking about with the bridge it is a great 2 point trem and works how one should although again the pop in trem bar feature on the SE is a nice feature. Overall I’d say the Se is the better guitar for most people especially considering the price hike of the players. If you really have you heart set on a Fender Strat just wait 6 months or so and I’m sure their will be a new line of Players or equivalent which might be even greater value.

As for the sound, I do think the PRS stock pickups were superior to the player series. Another thing to mention is that the aftermarket parts is way better for stratocasters than silver skies if you are into that. Also, at this price point, I think the schecter nick johnstons strats are best in class.

I've had a few Player-series Strats and Teles. QC is currently not wonderful, nor is setup out of the box. Frets on those I've bought over the last two years are quite rough, (and on some I've tried and rejected have been very rough indeed) but they do get the job done as gigging guitars. At the moment I gig a sunburst SSS and a white HSH., as well as a couple of Classic Vibes, one Chinese, one Indonesian which are both excellent. I got into PRS for a while because on a whim I picked up a 15-year-old Tremonti SE 18 months ago that sounds and plays amazingly well, but since then I've had a Zac Myers and a Starla that just didn't work for me and have gone. Bought a 2008 US Custom 22 at a very good price purely as an investment, superb quality and build but somehow I've never felt much desire to actually play it! I've tried the Silver Sky SE a couple of times but failed to see any advantage over a decent Player Strat (though it's definitely advisable to try a few of the latter in order to get a good one), and both the Sky's sounded a bit dull to be honest.

PRS is just too hard and too costly to upgrade. For example, the locking tuners cost twice what Fender locking tuners cost. There are not all the many colors and materials in pickguards like you can get for a Fender Strat. There are dozens of different replacement necks, bridges, knobs, etc, for Strats but none really for the Silver Skys. You're locked into what PRS makes, and they charge a lot for their accessories and add-ons they do offer.

The difference in clarity of pick ups are huge. Even a cheapcaster with a generic alnico V single coils sounds better tone wise compared to SE.

Pao Ferro is a deal breaker to me these days. Just feels horrible cheap and not good on the fingers. I'd rather have a laquer maple neck than Pao Ferro. Thankfully you can get a player strat with a roasted maple neck.

I like the rosewood on the PRS better, but the Strat sounds more like a… Strat! Which is what I’d want if I were buying a Strat. If I were buying a Strat, I’d get the Fender.

Pao Ferro is awful. I will never buy a Strat or any fender instrument with those orange boards

I hate it too

Yes they should change to Rosewood as well as retaining Maple. Ebony is underused on Fender fretboards.

I've a vintera 60s modified strat with the pao ferro board and it looks nothing like that, that one is so orange, I've a rosewood tele fretboard and side by side they are so similar. Oil that board someone before it shatters

I have a Pao Ferro board that is darker than many rosewood necks. It feels a little different but once it is worn in it is really smooth. I love it.

The PRS is far superior. I said a few weeks ago, I would have to sell my custom 22 to afford one of these. Well, I sold it today. I will be using your affiliate link tomorrow

Lol...Pao Ferro was used on some extremely high end guitars about 15 years ago. It may well be cheap but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it what so ever. It just happens to be in plentiful supply at the moment and in 50 years when they begin running out of it " and they will!!! Ridiculous morons will be saying "nothing beats my old Pao Ferro board".

It's extremely ugly compared to rosewood.

The Player is using American strat pickups and I believe electronics also. Unsure why the strat sounded mediocre. The PRS sounded muddy and not at all strat like.

Players use materials sourced from Mexico. Pickups are made in Mexico.

SRV had Pau Ferro on his NO. 1 Strat and all the Fender SRV's have Pau Ferro fretboards. It makes the fingerboard somewhere between Maple and Rosewood. It's a preference but don't suggest that Rosewood is better than Pau Ferro! Care to get the sales comparisons of the SE's vs. the Player? Bottom line, it's always the player that makes the guitar. The guitar doesn't make the player. Mayer sounded just as good and had his biggest hit records playing Fenders. He would also sound just as good if he played G&L, Nash, Shur or any other good Strat copy.

so the PRS Silver Sky is Cheaper because it comes with a Gig bag already and case candy

Silver Sky looks a little too toyish and the pickups sound like they have a blanket over them.
