The P-bass is such a simple but *perfect* design, that's why even the cheapo models already sound good.

I really enjoyed this review. Just bought an Affinity bass with a famous jazz musician (James Morrison) signature on the head. Thought I would be disappointed with the sound but wow it sounds good. Played Marcus Miller V7 for a year and got so sick of that active "7-knobs-and-a-switch" shit. Bought P-bass on sight just because it has only two knobs. And they actually do stuff. It's heaven. Can't go wrong. Lucky to find out later I also love the P tone. It was the tone I always searched for but never got on the "versatile" Marcus Miller.
@musenw8834
@musenw8834 2 жыл бұрын
Yea cos typical fender Js are single coil basses by nature, while P basses are humbucker no matter what. Nevertheless you could get close to a passive P with the neck pickup of a passive J rather than an active J. Active basses are designed for a lot of tone shaping, soloing and other more niche applications, and have the burden of batteries and stuff all.
@musenw8834
@musenw8834 2 жыл бұрын
Humbucker coils will give you a more saturated, solid sound than a single coil sound. Goes the same for guitars

Very good and useful demo. The Elite clearly seems to have a greater tonal range with its active pickups but I would have thought that by adding some compression and EQ in the signal chain the very same tones could be reproduced from the Fender Standard upwards. I'm looking to acquire a bass for a studio project so would be interested in other people's views on this. What do you think?

Used to be a J-bass man, but at the price point of the CV70, I just had to try it and damn! I have tried MIA P’s but nothing honestly comes close to my CV70; piano-like overtones and that neck is just to die for! I have switched to a hi-mass bridge and SPB-3 pups - it just rips! Pure tone machine with a gnarly growl and sustain for days. Fits the Orange Terror Bass and Sansamp soooo well!

do they need an upgrade like the bridge, pickups or something?
@passenger1jaro
@passenger1jaro 6 жыл бұрын
I would change the bridge for something more substantial (Kickass, Badass bridge etc), but that is just my personal preference as I play with pick and usually I hit hard, so it gives me more stability and response. I would say that same goes for pickups or tuning machines. Pickups are in general nice and tuners as well. You can change them after some time if you will feel like, but definitely its not necessary. Hope this helps

I played both, they are both great. just keep in mind that 50s one has quite chunkier/ thicker neck and wider nut (41,3 mm vs 44,5 mm). I have small hands and even though I love 50s one, I cant play it :) So me personally, I would rather buy standard and keep the money difference for possible mods

I swapped the neck on my affinity p bass with a jazz neck from a squier vintage modified and added SD quarter pounders. With a proper set up and some time spent on the frets you can make an amazing bass and still be at a fraction of the cost of a fender. I've even looked into getting a new fender since i changed mine around and just like the way mine sounds and plays... not bad for a bass I have less then $200 invested in.

Old video, but I had to check it out. I just got a Fender Vintera 50s P Bass. Over 40 years playing bass and it's my first Fender and it KILLS! Almost all my basses are active and I wanted a simple bare bones work horse. I think my next bass will be the Squier CV 50s, (not 70s, lol!). I really dig the single coil and can't afford the old Fender reissue.

Great review guys!!! In the end , as I can understand, the differences between all these models to justify their prices are all the other things except their wood quality... and personally I don't know if it matters!! And I don't know if this is the only thing that is different from boutique brands to justify their 4-5-6 grand prices above... My think is that the players have made the difference in the history of music.. Thanks
@musenw8834

Yes they do affect to some extent, due to the resonance of the wood.
@musenw8834
@musenw8834 2 жыл бұрын
But as the prices get higher, they differ in subtle nuances, which wouldn't be easily heard by most of a live audience if you used a $400-$500 bass as opposed to playing vintage or custom shop basses (which will set you back around twice that price)

As Master Groove Legend Sean Hurley will proclaim, there is something just creepy/mystical about the premise of that P bass. Stuff wanders around in the world of sounds and trends but the steady eddie kings like the tube amp, real cymbals, human feel and the P bass... there will always be that need for the most welcome bass worldwide. It is the Golden Retriever of basses. Always adored at an event.

AMPEG B-100R makes ALL basses sound better. In 1998 I acquired my first "serious" bass rig. A GK 800RB head on top of a SWR 2x10 and an AMPEG 1x15. It was OK sounding but I kept plugging my Jazz and Precision bass into my B-100R combo amp because the tone was way...WAY warmer and had a full rounder sound.

Cant really hear the difference between the Elite (passive) and the performer. 17:57 (performer) compared with 22:06 (Elite). The darker fret board has a slightly warmer sound (my preference). Overall, not really worth the nearly thousand dollar difference when you need a versatile P Bass. Lastly, a nice amp will blow away almost all of the differences.

Rosewood is much harder than maple. What is the Janka Hardness Scale? The Janka hardness scale (often referred to as the Janka hardness list) is an industry wide measurement of the hardness of wood. The higher the number the harder it is. The test measures the amount of force required to embed a .444-inch steel ball to half its diameter into a material. The more force required to embed the steel ball, the harder the material is. Maple is 1450, yet Brazilian Rosewood is 3000!!!!!

I own a fender American elite, this exact same one and I can attest to how perfect and beautiful it is. My only gripe is the active pickup though, because I find that the ch0nkyboi bass drains the battery so fast that it requires you to swap batteries every 3 days or so. But that should not deter anyone from such a perfect instrument, the performance of this bass is the best I've ever experienced and I've played a ton of bass guitars.
