i absolutely agree, the strat is the instrument with the fewest handicaps and hindrances. Who you are comes out when you play a strat. Unsupported and unrestrained. It'll never make a bad guitarist sound better than they are, and it'll never make a good guitarist sound worse than they are. It tells you something about yourself you didn't know every time you pick it up. Arguably the most dynamic instrument ever made.
@TheMadMusicMan15 жыл бұрын
Not all strats and bridge need that. I had the two piviot style on my Strat and in order for it to sound great it needed to float. I now have a six screw system and having it flat doesn't make it sound harsh, but rather a little more tight. Floating bridges are nice, I like to keep my flat though so I can tune down without problems.

I used to have 2 Silvertone Twin Twelve amps that I would stack up and Y the inputs. I was using an Epiphone Dot with humbuckers, but didn't like the neck pickup sound. So, in a music store, I picked up my first strat and tried it out. The first thing I noticed was the volume control was "right there," next to the strings, no reaching for it. So, I got one, but now the Silvertones didn't distort. That got fixed with an Electro Harmonix LPB1 line booster, which has just been re-issued.

When Strats sound harsh it is because pickups are too high to strings or some of them really need the bridge to float. Try those things out, it will help.

I do most of mine through the front too (played with many cobinations over the years). I use a noise gate and a volume pedal in my loop, everything else in the front. I don't use overdrive from an amp much. To me only Marshalls, new hybrid Fenders and EVH's amp have good distortion/overdrive.

I've only used Rosewood on my HB guitars until i got my Strat ('08 MIA standard) which is Maple and wow what a differnece, the playability is phenomenal. Mine has a great gloss on the neck so it looks slightly darker, beautiful.
@TheMadMusicMan15 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah I love working on guitars and making them sound the best they can. I have found with strats that pickups, especially single coils, have to be the proper distance from the strings. And also making the bridge a floating brodge can help if it sounds too harsh.

I own a 1964 Strat I bought in 1979. I also own a 2001 American Standard. It sounds different and weighs nearly 3 pounds more than the 64. In my experience it's the weight of a guitar that plays the biggest role in a guitar's sweetness or meanness. I hear this in Les Pauls as well. I have 4 mahogany Ibanez SZ320s. They weigh from 7 to 10 pounds. Same thing here again. Vintage guitars tend to weigh less. Their magic is their weight, not their age. That's my finding.

@mistersnaredrum16 жыл бұрын
for accessiblity and ease of use, the strat always wins as it is a workingman's instrument, designed to be set up or fixed by anyone, not a piece of art or woodwork. i play both, but i understand that the strat and the telecaster, while not being as handmade (and thereby of varying quality) are still design classics, and that is a fact. if something goes wrong on a strat neck, you replace the neck. with a gibson, you're in a whole heap of trouble unless you're a luthier.

Basically, with a twin reverb the mids are not the mids: I mean, not what you could be used to if you come from other type amps. Everyone should start putting the mids on 9-10 and then set treble and bass to taste > now in fact you've got quite flat sound. From here, plug in any distortion pedal and you'll have a good or very good tone, even with for example a boss DS-1 (which would sound awful into a twin with low mids and bass settings). So believe me, first pump up mids (and at least 4-5 the basses), then listen to your pedals ;)
@blahman17816 жыл бұрын
I agree, and I like the feel and playability of strats just as much as Gibsons, but it's expected that an LP would have more sustain, they have the glued in neck,tilted back headstock, stopbar tail piece, and humbuckers. Gibsons SHOULD be better quality because they cost 2x as much, however, Custom SHop strats are better IMO than any production Gibson (they are in the same price range)

the route 66 was on the whole time. he stomped on an A/B pedal. it allows you to switch between 2 amps. the route 66 was only conected to the big super reverb, and was always on so he didnt need to stomp on it.

@murfdog1912 жыл бұрын
Actually, American Fenders are built almost exactly the same today as they were in the old days. On the other hand, Gibson has cut many corners to increase profits. Fender has remained the players' company while Gibson has been over run with corporate suits.

The brand of string really is such a personal preference thing, you probably should just trust your own ears. But if your fingers are up to it, try using heavier gauge strings, eg 11 on top, although the guitar set up might need tweaking.

Lucky buggers, my 91 strat plus and 88 fender "the twin" will have to do. But if use my Boss Parametric EQ with the twin I can actually get some pretty vintage sounding tone out of it.
@blahman17816 жыл бұрын
That's right! I really feel the same way as Carl (in the video) where he says that it's harder to dial in 'your sound' out of single coils, but once you find it, it's better than anything. I really feel that way- a good vintage or custom shop/high end strat, with a good OD or amp, beats almost any tone (think Eric Johnson). I still love the warmth of the neck PU on an LP for jazz, and the 'over the top', fluid feel of the bridge PU when playing hard rock/classic metal stuff (nu metal SUCKS!)
@milodaman213 жыл бұрын
@Uberloinvongenchler It's because the older fenders were handmade back in the 60s. And they actually cost about $2000 back then (only $257 adjusted to 1960 inflation). Some play like complete dogs and others play very well. Many people like them because the wood is old and it sounds better than some guitars, but I'd rather have an old hunk of maple or something cut instead of paying a five figure price. I agree though, they only got expensive near the 80s or so.

I don't know. Gibson quality is kinda sucky for the outrageous prices they ask. I am pretty content with my 2008 fender am std strat, but then again, I recently played, one of the higher end squiers in a music store. It sounded just as good and played nearly as good. The 800 euro difference suddenly felt kinda bitter to me lol:p But I don't know what that means. Is fender overpriced, or are the better squires just really good?

Thanks for the demonstration. Your playing and picking is fantastic. However, type in "Les Paul" here at KZbin and see the videos that have been uploaded and the wonderful tones that the Gibson guitars produce. You are entitled to your opinion on Fender guitars and amps, but why not get both Gibson and Fender! How about PRS guitars? Epiphone has some pretty darn good ones too. Your reasoning is subjective. But thanks for the video demonstration!
@murfdog1912 жыл бұрын
You are right. The American Standard is far from being like the Pre CBS Strats. The American Standards are MUCH better. I know several players who own or have owned pre CBS Strats. You have to say a Hail Mary before tuning, or the tuning peg will break right off. The plastic was junk also. It broke away very easily. Modern Fender guitars are light years ahead of the vintage guitars.

Well the vintage fender and gibsons are definalty made a lot better than their modern counterparts. That being said, you do have a point. Despite being well made, I don't think there is any real magic in these instrument compared to a modern expertly built guitar. A lot of it is what I call the stradivarius effect. Stradivarii are sought after instruments, but recently, they were blind tested against high quality modern violins. Guess which violin was preferred... fun demos nonetheless

@mudshrimpmoe7 жыл бұрын
There were a series of changes over the years. They added a master volume fairly early in the silverface years, which stayed on them at least through 1980. The output transformer changed, as did speakers. Basically, the Twin Reverbs got louder and cleaner in the silverface years. By the very early '80's they had stuff like the red knob versions and "the evil twin" where they were trying to introduce pre-amp gain in the circuit.

Black Face is 85 watts and the Silver face was 135? watts. The Super Twin is 160? watts. I have a Red Knob "The Twin" which I usually play my red knob on the 25 watt setting. In between the Red Knob and the Silver Face was the Riviera II series Which the changes Riviera brought to fender like Channel switching or combining and Hi/lo power usually 100/25 watts are reflected in the red knob "The Twin" and the more recent Fender Twin or Evil Twin. Unfortunately, the Red Knob uses brittle circuit boards that break as the get older.
