The Comanche Deluxe sounds like home-made waffles draped in Honey Butter, drizzled with Maple Syrup and topped with a furious helping of Heavy Whipped Cream. Actually reminds me of the Koa/Rosewood Carvin I had once upon a time except just *way* more.. I like to think of that Carvin as Uncle Riff's favorite nephew and the Comanche as his beloved mistress. I named mine "Warband" because that full warm solid sweet tone can scream like hell when you want it to.

Chappers, thank you so much for telling the story of Dale! I as well feel like his rightful position in the history of the guitar was in jeopardy of being forgotten and he should be celebrated. At the vintage shop I work at, my boss was friends with Dale and when he passed he bought all of his estate stuff so we have all of his papers, designs, even his book of dealers from Fender and G&L and I love to get it out and show people the inner workings of the best guitar companies in the world!

I'm loving that "roomy" sound you guys have got in this video. It sounds true to whats coming out of that amp in that room and is not purely a studio sound.
@RabihSaadguitars
@RabihSaadguitars 7 жыл бұрын
Thats because they r mixing the ambient mic that is capturing the sound in the room and the miced cabinets..That way you have a scene of being there in room on how actually it sounds..they should use this technique with all the Andertons videos, cause frankly they are not my cup of tea tone audio engineering..

I own both a Indonesia G&L and Mexican Fender between the two the G&L is so much smoother to play. The fretboard radius on the G&L is a little flatter than a standard fender neck so you really bend hard and play fast. Also the stock pickups in the G&L are great, G&L is so underrated they make great guitars.
@polaroidguy
@polaroidguy 6 жыл бұрын
That's the word "underrated" G&L are the evolution of Fender, G&L is where Leo worked by own creativity unleashed make incredible things, without rules or guidelines by his former company (where practicaly was kicked out) he was a genius and he find the way: make his own company

I hung out with Dale Hyatt.... when I was a just-post-teen-guitar-teacher teaching teens. Dale taught me...he taught me why G&L was the best guitar company of the late 80s( beginning of the 90s...) Everything that they had learned was all being put to use, and they were building for quality over style. Mr. Fender was in his office (!!!) but Dale told me he could not come out and meet me and my student that day. We geeked out that we *almost met Leo Fender!! Dale was generous with his time and happy to hang out with young people who seemed to "get it" and wanted to learn more. If you want to really compare the LEO design, you want to use an S-500 over a "Legacy" which was created years after Leo passed. The latest you want to go with a Fender strat to retain Leo's "latest" ideas for Fender would be about 75 when he was still a consultant whose ideas were still being built into the new instruments. So... compare a 1975 Stratocaster to a 1992 S-500 and you can actually answer "which one is better?" - I toured with a G&L L-2000 bass and a G&L SC-2 guitar in the 90s... and they both loved the road, never messed up... and despite having to use batteries, the bass sounded great in every size room with various bass cabinet set ups... the guitar cut through like a smoothed out Tele, especially clear and bright when set to "both." Two of my clients used S-500s and I was jealous of one of them because I had sold my American Strat and was playing a Japanese with after market pickups. His sounded more "Stratty" than mine. G&L guitars are worrisome to Fender. They know that they are on their tail, biting their heels and don't like it. Too bad, Fender. :) (*P.S. Leo Fender could not come out of his office that day because he was shaking really badly from the palsy associated with Parkinson's and some strokes... he was thinking and creating but... it's no fun to meet kids when you are all shaky... I get it. )

G&L is grossly underrated. FCS quality at production-line prices. Some say... the original 80's product lineup with 3-bolt neck-join created skepticism due to Fender's failure with the 3-bolt in the '70's. Even though those early G&L guitars are rock-solid to this day, the company eventually switched to 4-bolt to quiet the skeptics and hopefully boost sales. This early stumble may be why they're not more popular today. Just pick one up and you'll know why they're hidden gems.

intrsoul to be fair, to most the headstock and bridge are overly ugly. I dont care much about the headstock... But the bridge is a monstruosity
@tdunster2011
@tdunster2011 7 жыл бұрын
The job of the head stock and the bridge are to keep the guitar intonated and in tune - both of which the G&L do exceptionally well. You can actually use the whammy bar on the g&l without having to retune the guitar after every bend - which is more than I can say for most of the competition.
@martshred
@martshred 7 жыл бұрын
That's funny because the bridge and the headstock are some of my favourite features of G&Ls
@intrsoul
@intrsoul 7 жыл бұрын
Sure - different strokes. I remember seeing ads in the 80's and not liking the headstock or bridge either. I think they've fine tuned the headstock and decal over the years and they're pretty slick now - especially if you want something DIFFERENT than Fender. The bridge is a two-point fulcrum that sounds and works great - I like the thicker bar with set-screw for setting tension. They could do with a little more aesthetic tweaking, but man...pick one up and they're stunning.
@intrsoul
@intrsoul 7 жыл бұрын
I think the deal-maker for me is this: you pay for the guitar and features, hence the quality. With similar-priced Fender, you're paying for the brand (yes you are) and a decent guitar that likely needs some upgrades. As a kid, I was all about the brand/logo, but I'm wiser now ;)

My favorite thing about my G&Ls is the cost to performance ratio. I think I payed $1200 (in 2013) for my Legacy Special USA, and the quality is absurdly good. It's a one-piece body with a see-through orange finish and beautiful wood grain underneath. You can tell when you hold the instrument that somebody payed serious attention to it while putting it together.

you forgot to mention the single tone control(fender) vs the treble and bass rolloff. (G&L)

Indeed. I have a Legacy and love, love, love the treble/bass controls, particularly with higher gain. It *very* swiftly became my #1 guitar.

Those were some amazing tones Dave & Chappers! That amp seems to sound stonking too. I'm telling myself I can't afford another damn guitar!

In 1986, I️ played over70 Fender Strats before I️ accidentally came across a 1984 Master Series Esprit w/two humbuckers and a locking tremolo that had hung in that music store for 2 years before I️ came across it. Years later I️ finally bought a Strat but it only ever has been a back up guitar. Then last year, after playing only one G&L S-500, I️ finally found a Stratesque guitar that I️ could make my primary axe. I️ gave my Esprit to my oldest son because I️ had promised it to him two decades ago and because I️ finally felt like I️ had found my new love with that S-500. My Strat still is, at best, one of my back up guitars, right there with my Jackson Soloist.

Cool you are covering G&L. I was looking for a affordable classic S-Style guitar for a long time ... A ton of Squier CV's, Mexico Fenders I played at small and big stores just weren't the thing. And the first G&L Legacy Tribute I played at a local guitar store was so different, I instantly bought it. I think it are especially the pickups. The G&L sound a lot meatier and feels great to play. TRY THEM!

I had the same experience as you. Was looking to upgrade to a Fender Telecaster in the $1000 range after being fed up with Squiers and subpar Player Series. I tried a used G&L Tribute Legacy at my local GC and knew I couldn’t put it down. A $400 guitar that feels better, looks better, and crafted better than many of the Fenders I had tried. Can’t go wrong with G&L.

Great video! Just wondering why ya'll decided to compare the Legacy to the Elite strat and not the professional? I feel like either the S-500 vs. the Elite or the Pro vs. the Legacy would be good matches. Thanks for the always great vids!!

I have a 96 Legacy (USA model) and a 2004 50th Anniversary American Standard Strat. Both are the Ash body. Build quality is pretty close, with the Fender slightly edging out the G&L. The G&L have the “swimming pool” pickup pocket routing, vs the individual routing of the Fender. I prefer the Fender routing myself, it ads solidity for the pick guard. The G&L also has a lot of static noise when you rub your little finger on the pick guard while playing. As for the sound, they are completely different. The G&L is slightly louder, and a bit brighter than the Fender. The pickups in the Fender (special for that year only) are just a bit quieter, with a great tone. As for one being “better sounding” than the other comes down to personal preferences. I love the sound of both, but I find myself playing the Fender much more. It just feels better, and plays smoother that the G&L. But, the G&L does have its place. If I had to only play one, it would be the Stratocaster.

From all the videos I have watched (...all of them) I gather from what everyone has said that Dave is a natural musician and can play just about anything. And Rob is his usual awesome self. I must say, his tone here is very good. Just enough gain to get a nice bite and sustain and low enough to hear every note. Those guitars are both real stunners. G&L are the same as Fender to me, maybe even a little higher on the quality pole. Both are not what they used to be. But that is the world we live in today,

The very place! Saw him filming the video too. One thing that a lot of us really don't like is the name of the song though as there is another song called Galway Girl written by and American artist called Mundy which every Irish person knows off by heart!

3 G&L guitars just arrived at the local pawn shop, all used to belong to the one player, who is known to me. He knows his guitars. I might check them out, quite reasonably priced and in good shape.
