It really makes you jump when your string just randomly snaps when you're tuning it... :(
@Walamonga13139 жыл бұрын
Did it really break? Or did it just like unravel at the peg and make a snapping sound? The latter happened to me and it scared me. If it really broke, try to tune it about 2-3 steps down so it doesn't get all of the tension from standard tuning right away. Then just raise and lower the pitch to stretch the strings. If that doesn't work maybe try another gauge?

•You can do this with your guitar just sitting on your lap •You dont need to have your pins assigned to that specific string •You do not need to pre cut strings and there's no real advantage to doing it •You'll either need another string or you'll have less windings if you happen to pre cut your strings too short •Thinner strings can be wound several times so leave yourself more slack before winding thinner strings •You can change your strings all at once it doesnt have to be done 1 by 1

Small tip for preventing your strings from snapping while tuning; never turn more than a quarter rotation on the peg at a time, if you go further, you’re likely to overcorrect, and there’s a higher chance of your strong snapping. If you’re ever unsure of if you’re too sharp or flat, play it safe and make the string flat. Not only does it help prevent strings from getting too tight and snapping, but it also tends to be easier and more accurate when tuning up being flat :)
@ldhorricks Жыл бұрын

Never tried this two at a time method before -- I just slack 'em up and then pull off all six strings at once. Same for electric. I've heard several techs say it's not a problem, and I've never had an issue. Guitars are subject to changes in tension all the time. They can take it; at least, I've never seen one that couldn't, and I've owned like 20 guitars. While my strings are off, I clean everything. Neck, headstock, body, everything. Unbelievable how much grunge builds up if you play in a warm climate like SoCal. There are countless brutal arguments on what you should use or not use to clean a fretboard. There is certainly not a consensus out there. I've tried plain water (Scott Grove), lighter fluid, wood furniture spray, Lemon Pledge, Orange oil, etc. I've gotten good results with all of these. The latest thing I've tried using to clean my fretboard is just a moist terry cloth wash rag that I've heated in the microwave for about 20 seconds. It's pretty warm when it comes out. That little steamy wash rag softens my greasy finger DNA and wipes it right off! It leaves my fretboard as clean as a whistle and costs virtually nothing. I'm not saying you should use this trick; I'm just saying what I have done and it has worked GREAT. I like to check my frets for wear while the strings are off. The last time I changed strings (did my 12-string last week), my 2nd fret had 3 serious wear dents in it. So I did a quickie fret dress since I have the whole StewMac refretting tool kit. I think it would have been very awkward to clean my neck or touch up those frets with some strings still attached. Once my board is clean and frets are dressed, I lay out the new strings and put them on in order...E A D G B e (fattest to thinnest). I pin one at a time like he does, and then put 'em through the hole leaving one finger between string and fretboard to give it some windup slack, and then I bend the excess backward. Then I wind em up. I do not trim my strings until they're wound on, but I may try that next time. It seems reasonable. I don't use a winder; I have one somewhere, but anymore I just wind 'em by hand. If I need to pry up a tight bridge pin, I just use a wire cutters (like that one he had) to gently coax 'em out of their holes. But I agree the strings should wind on neatly and not overlap because it's nice to have a linear result when you turn a tuning peg. Anyway, just one guy's humble field mouse opinion after playing for 33 years.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. 1. It's okay to take every string off at once, it's not gonna affect your guitar in any way 2. It doesn't really matter which bridge pin you use for which string 3. You should never, ever, EVER cut the string before winding it around the machine head, because that can mess things up big time (I know from experience) 4. He doesn't really tell you how to wind the string around the machine head

My guitar string (String 4, D) snapped while I was tuning it. For some reason, the electric tuner I was using kept saying that the string was between either E or G. So frustrating, I tuned it so much that it snapped. >.< Left a huge red scar down my arm. Then I watched this video and managed to get the new string back on. As you can tell, I'm a complete amateur guitarist, lol.

Thank you. I grew up in a family of guitar playing starting with my great grandmother with old fashion baptist gospel to my maternal uncles playing lynard skynard, ac dc, ozzy etc. In all those years i never watched any of them string their guitars which they did often and i never had to do it myself. i watched this video cause my mom bought my 7 yr old son his first guitar and one of the strings became very loose. I appreciate your video being to the point and so simple to follow.

Instead of cutting the string ends off, just wiggle them till they break, that way you wont have that sharp edge, and that gives it the professional look of perfect stringing :)

Best advice I can give is cut your strings, however not to the extent he does. Make sure you still have a bit more than you need just in case. Another is to consistently make sure the string doesn't unwind itself while simultaneously holding it down just below the nut at the head stock. It's tricks]y but once you eventually get it wound up be VERY slow with how you tune it and give your guitar time to adjust to the new strings. Take a few breaks in between and go slowly and eventually you'll be fine. :)

Ok so I got this old guitar from my brother. And the strings hadn’t been changed in probably a decade. And a friend of mine gave me new strings and told me to be very careful because when he first tried to restring his guitar he went through the three packs. So I planned to watch like 40 videos before I tried. Then I abandoned that plan and watched this one and just kind of got the gist of it. And I actually did it!! I didn’t break any strings and they are all in the right spot!! Anyway just wanted to share cuz I’m proud of myself 😃

I always find that if you put a kink in the string by the ball end it helps to keep the end of the string in the perfect place against the bridge plate and prevents the bridge pin from popping out. Also very halloween themed "candy apple ball end" good job! Thanks for the video 👍
@abigailmcelroy53353 жыл бұрын
It does on the thinner strings. I definitely did that. Way too much experience in restringing badly and having some knowledge of wire wrapping jewelry as a teen. But be extremely careful. Very thin strings break very easy! Slight bend. Very slight.

1. Unless you're doing something else besides just changing strings, change one string at a time, (this helps to keep the neck straight and holds the intonation longer). 2. When you remove a string, use a lead pencil on the nut grooves so your strings slide easier and aren't prone to hanging, for better in-tune playing. 3. Put three finger under the string once you get it past the nut, two fingers for the G and D strings due them being furthest away), before putting the STRINGS into the peg winders, to give yourself enough string length for a couple of winds around the peg before the string is in tuning range. 4. Put the pegs with the holes facing horizontal to the guitar as your looking down the neck. Put the string in so it has to turn at a 90 degree angle, then turn up away from the guitar, bring the string back, then go under the string and bring upward and over, then tighten. Then start winding the string tighter, (always towards the inner part of the guitar. This will give you a nice loop that will keep the string from slipping. 5. Bend about a half inch of the excess wound strings up top before you cut them, so they don't unravel. (I actually do this to all of them just to keep in the habit) 6.Tune & Play - Enjoy!
@carter3582 жыл бұрын
Be careful if you cut the string before winding, especially if you tune below concert pitch. I always wind first and leave plenty of slack in case I want to go down a half-step or a step. Also, always tune up to the note. If you go past the note, go back down and then go up to it.
