is playing is the most lyrical of anyone in Rock. My absolute favorite guitarist ever. People talk about his technique being weak or sloppy, but NO ONE plays a line with the touch and feeling that he does. NO ONE can impart the aggressive, powerful feeling of Heartbreaker like him. NO ONE can play a song like rain song at 100 decibels live with the delicacy of Jimmie. And no one writes the melodic lines that will be playing 100 years from now like Jimmy. Almost everysong he did was a masterpiece on so many levels.
@jayall009 ай бұрын
Agreed, what people think is him playing sloppy is usually intentional and actually very technical. I think there should be a new word to describe it. His playing style is in the same light as the Bonham or Purdy shuffle. It's not perfectly in sync, and that's WHY it sounds so good. It sounds human and organic, and (just imo) that's something today's music lacks. So many people just don't get it, but that to me is at the very essence of the blues and led zeppelin's playing. It's almost like an intended drunkenness. It's like Robert Plant when he sings Dancing Days. His vocals are sung at a lower pitch than they should be, and it has the adverse effect. It brings the song to life, and he knows it
@erichharrington12139 ай бұрын
@@jayall00 Well said. I think Page also was willing to push to the edge of his technique, not in pat scales but in free improvisation. It gave it a tension you don't get by playing safe. And Bonham had this amazing technique of laying back in the pocket as good as ANYONE, and then as the tension built in transitions, he would move forward to in time or slightly ahead to create a sense of urgency or climax, and then he would release back into that amazing behind the beat pocket. He was the best drummer ever, and for things the vast majority of people, even musicians don't understand, but they FEEL it. And Page was the same. The paying in the middle of the movie "Song remains the same" starting with "No Quarter" was unmatched in my experience for a live performance. Even my classical pianist friend when he watched it with me said it was virtuosity of a level he had never seen in rock players..

I'd agree with that. Certainly it's my personal favourite out of their catalogue. Extremely tasteful and melodic, with the soft loud dynamic being exectuded by the whole band with perfection. I think 'light and shade' is like a personal mantra to Jimmy if I understand it right. It's not just about the musical dynamics in LZ's music, it manifests itself in so many different ways. The interest in any music lies in the contrast, and light vs shade is a great perspective on that
@coobird1ify7 жыл бұрын
Tedmund13 ,,,,,,, absolutely right ,,",,Light and Shade " is a term used in painting or sculpture(other art forms as well) . Jimmy was brilliant in using that term to describe compostions in music. It's referring to contrast. Loud against quiet, fast against slow ,,hard again soft. ( light and shadow ) . Think of those as musical notes. One accentuates the other to create variety, ,, hence creating interrest and impact. You can recognise it easily in " Ramble On". Jimmy is a master at creating this effect in his compositions. IMHO

Have always known those lines in this part were doing something unusual underneath. Actually, hearing them clearly like this, as a guitar player, they are extraordinary, and quite unguitar-like! The magic only deepens in a song I thought i knew inside out! Just, Wow.

@@eudymaverickmentor "Malofiy claimed Zeppelin copied were musical traditions that date back at least to the 1600s and appeared in songs like the Beatles’ “Michelle.” So that would mean that many bands, including the aforementioned Beatles ripped off this scale, along with Taurus. Oh and don't forget Eric Clapton's "Let it Grow" kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYmnl2yLrK16fJY Listen to the chords, then listen to them at 50 seconds. It is the same. I first became aware of this bootleg years ago. I saw it in a record store (remember those?) and it was behind the counter in a glass top case and I asked about it. The guy said he didn't know much about it so I asked if I could listen to it, he said sure. It starts off with the run through of Custard Pie, and immediately I said SOLD! It was far and away the most I had ever paid for a bootleg CD! Bootlegs are traditionally expensive, but this was like $80 that was a shit TON of money for a Bootleg CD! I took it home and listened to it, and then listened to it about twenty times in a row! I brought it over to my friends house and told him, you HAVE to hear this! My buddy was the ULTIMATE LZ Fanatic! He & I loved everything Zep! He had a look on his face when the version of In The Light started that was like looking at the face of someone watching their child being born! We listened to that entire thing 10 times! We got hammered and just enjoyed hearing the different ways they were putting all these songs together, it was great! My buddy passed away suddenly from a heart attack a number of years ago, it devastated me. I never got to say goodbye, and we really loved each other. I miss him a lot! This makes me think about him, and it makes me feel good that we shared this together. There are people that try to convince you that this is fake! It's a tribute band doing an impression of Zeppelin. If you are a true student of Zeppelin, you know it's them. I know these were stolen from Page a number of years ago. So yes, it's Zeppelin! Raw and real!

He's the only rocker guitarists I can think of who's still pushing the envelope. Pity he gigs mainly abroad, an irony since he lives only 20 odd miles from me yet hasn't toured his homeland for a couple of years....

First off, writing the entire bridge for 10 Years Gone!! I can honestly say that this song has been in love with me from the first time I heard it, in High School, 1977 or '78. I saw Led Zeppelin in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Riverfront Coliseum, April 21st, 1977. (I think that's accurate). first come, first served seating. My girlfriend and I had a straight-on view of the stage at the very back of Riverfront Coliseum. We had a wide-angle view, and the huge lighting trusses and the sound was perfectly Stereo. At exactly 8:00 pm that evening, the lights went out! No announcements. Jimmy Page started the chords for "The Song Remains The Same" and comes dancing out on stage right. Robert Plant came dancing out of stage left, and they met in the middle of the stage, THAT was when the song exploded! Everyone went banana's!!! They played for 2 and a half hours! Both nights. (The next night, the 20th, as well). The laser effects that they used back then were still new, pretty spectacular but a pain in the ass to mainstain!. Their stage and lighting trusses were enormous for 1977!!! 2 years later in December of 1979, I faced death right in front of my face at the same venue, only this time to see The Who, at Riverfront Coliseum, Downtown Cincinnati.

Page once said he loved Joni Mitchell, because her music made him cry. Listening to this demo, especially at the beginning, I can hear a little Joni Mitchell in there. Yes, Page took liberties with some artist's music, but his genius was in his ability to capture different styles of music, and incorporate it into his own. Bowie did the same thing.
