This is awesome. I was eyeballing the NRS components and immediately noticed they like to overcharge….by a lot. One can buy the exact aluminum tubing NRS sells for 1/3 the price at a metal supply store.

We do 4-day trips with 4 people on our phatcat. Our record is 5 people on it down the Eagle river in CO

So I have access to 2"x1.5mm and 1.5 diameter stainless tube at mt work and the ability to bend and weld it as well. Will this material work for a phatcat frame as well? Thank you
@FullFaceAndy3 ай бұрын
@@pashkracken4054 I'd imagine so. I've never put hands on material like you have but I know stainless is stronger than the galvanized mild steel shown here.

@@FullFaceAndy Thank you for the response, I work at a stainless steel, cable and railing shop so lots of scrap to buy from the boss cheap ;) I'll talk to the design shop, and can then cut it all on the laser after they make the program.

You make a video about that other frame you were going to build for the larger raft?
@FullFaceAndy11 ай бұрын
I did, I have several videos through the whole build process of my channel.

how about that trailer the phatcat is on? I have the same boat and a real similar frame setup. That trailer looks amazing!
@FullFaceAndy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's an old utility trailer that I stripped down to the frame, then used the same 1in EMT to make a raised deck over the wheel wells.

Thanks for the video. Looks legit. Curious though about any flex in the steel with rowing. I hear its not great with steel vs. aluminum.

Never noticed on any frame that I've built or used. But I could see it potentially being a concern on much larger rafts with wider spans or something.

What is the measurement from oarlock to oarlock, and what length of oar is he using?

Thanks for posting this, very informative. I don't have welding gear but am thinking of trying to make a custom frame for my Zelgear. What part of the country are you in?

I have a Colorado Trout unlimited, tubes where getting a bit old and wanted something for white water, I got 9 foot Jack plastic pontoons, reworked existing frame with 1 inch conduit as well, the boat already has the steel ore towers and its basically a double frame, I just need to weld the ore towers to outside frame for a little more strength probably is over kill, but they are pretty important. Not sure easiest way to upload pic in a comment but if anyone wants pics let me know and I can send them over. I also took skin from old pontoons and made a top cover for the new ones, perfect fishing/whitewater cat.

On my other frames I've used marine carpet for a top cover but I like your idea of using the old pontoon skins, sounds very durable!

@@FullFaceAndy i had them sewn onto a trampoline material, it looks like it was made for it. That stuff is super tough.
