I have some questions that are probably stupid but as I know nothing about the area, here goes. This looks/sounds expensive, how many pigs does it take for them to do enough damage to warrant this type of intervention? Why not intervene sooner before there are so many to deal with? Is a single sow or pair too hard to detect? Where do they come from? Are there wild hogs running loose in the surrounding area that are ignored unless they go near a farmers fields? Sorry in advance if these questions are too basic.
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 6 жыл бұрын
These are actually great questions. Expense is a matter of Return on Investment (ROI) to most landowners. The average farmer will produce 200 bushels of corn per acre in a southeastern United States irrigated field. This means a single 100-acre field (100-acres x 200 bushels) equals 20,000 bushels of corn. Today’s corn price is $3.74 per bushel x 20,000 bushels equals $74,800 of income from growing corn. Ten adult pigs will easily reduce the yield from 200 bushels an acre to only 160 in July or August. What does this 20% reduction cost a farmer? 40 bushels x 100 acres = 4,000 bushels @ $3.74 = $14,960. The M.I.N.E.™ Trapping System with (6) 18-60™ (16’ long) flex trap panels as used in this video only costs $3,000.00. A smart farmer understands our M.I.N.E.™ trap will pay for itself in a single capture in one field and they would still pocket an additional $12,000 from one field's preventive maintenance. The trap could be paid in full from the first ten-pig capture and then used to target additional sounders on the property with very little overhead. Why not intervene sooner? Because most humans (and governments) are reactive instead of proactive. Most wait until the problem becomes so big they are forced to take action instead of using preventative maintenance when the problem is small. Feral pigs are not hard to detect at all. Most farmers are frugal and attempt to use recreational hunters (guns, archery, dogs, etc.) or other "free" methods which makes the problem worse. There is NO closed season and NO bag limit on feral pigs because they are not native to the United States and considered an agricultural pest. Traditional HUNTING methods used to manage game animals (whitetail deer) producing one or two fawns per year will not CONTROL an invasive species (feral pig) producing 12-20 piglets annually. Traditional HUNTERS have the ability to harvest an unlimited number of feral pigs 365 days per year but are either unwilling or incapable of population CONTROL. The illegal transportation and release of feral pigs for recreational hunting purposes is the primary reason for our current problem. Only whole-sounder methods and technologies implemented by trained and certified Hog Control Operators™ are able to control feral pig populations. Traditional hunters and trappers are merely educating them to create a nocturnal, trap-resistant species. We observe cautious feral swine behavior quite often in the field. It is the direct result of a previously failed attempt by an inexperienced person using a less effective product (i.e. portable box trap, narrow gate, trip wire, etc.) against the fourth most intelligent animal on the planet. Any pigs outside the trap when gates are triggered will learn from the experience and become "trap resistant" to future metal objects. This is the reason we promote whole-sounder lethal control. Removing the entire sounder at one time prevents any pig from escaping, surviving, reproducing or being educated to the removal process or product.

@@JAGERPRO Thanks very much. I appreciate the info. I hope you don't mind a final question, If the farmer removes all of the pigs how long does it take for a repeat to be required? Or do they leave the system in place and keep trapping to prevent future issues? (I'm assuming that they buy/own the system but pay for someone to monitor it.)
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 6 жыл бұрын
@@taggerinc2652 - The definition of Integrated Wild Pig Control™ (IWPC™) is “a strategic approach using a series of innovative lethal control methods and technologies implemented in a specific sequence based on seasonal food sources. Emphasis is placed on efficient removal of the entire sounder at one time to eliminate escapes, education and reproduction. The control strategies must continually change throughout the various seasons to effectively target adaptive survivors.” There are several factors which determine how long a property remains at "zero balance" after a successful IWPC™ program has been implemented. Future reproduction and migration would have to come from adjacent properties since an effective IWPC™ program would prevent escapes, method education and reproduction from the entire generation of feral pigs living on the property. Are neighboring landowners implementing a successful IWPC™ program? Are there enough trained Hog Control Operators™ in the county to effectively implement the IWPC™ program? Has the state passed legislation to stop intrastate and interstate transportation of feral pigs? How well are law enforcement personnel enforcing these rules in the state? Are judges and the court system prosecuting those breaking the rules with heavy fines? How many criminals are illegally transporting and releasing new feral pig populations in the county? The amount of time a property remains at "zero balance" greatly depends on the answers to the above questions. After 12 years of field experience, we do not believe the average farmer or landowner can remove the entire feral swine population from their property no more than the average homeowner can remove the entire termite, rat or cockroach population from their home. One reason there is still a feral pig problem is because there are not enough trained and certified Hog Control Operators™ across the United States to properly operate our M.I.N.E.™ Trapping Systems or implement an effective IWPC™ model on multiple properties at the same time. The national solution is not about how many feral pigs JAGER PRO™ personnel can harvest annually, but how many sounders we can train Hog Control Operators™ to successfully remove each year. We have manufactured/sold more than 3,000 of our M.I.N.E.™ Trapping Systems to the public which we estimate 250,000 - 300,000 pigs were removed last year using our methods and technology. The feral swine problem will ultimately be resolved when we scale product sales and training/certification to several million pigs removed annually. Legislation must also be passed (and enforced) in all 50 states to stop illegal transportation and release of feral pigs for recreational and sport hunting purposes. Success cannot be achieved until each state stops new populations from being started. Lastly, our M.I.N.E.™ Trapping System with 12 rigid 18-60™ panels was designed to be mobile. It is much easier to move our trap to a new sounder's location on the property than trying to bait them a thousand yards to the trap.

We now have a weekly television show which airs every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm Eastern, 8:30 pm Central on RFD-TV. Our first season (26 shows) demonstrates how a single Hog Control Operator™ efficiently removes the entire population of 450 feral pigs from a 4,800-acre property along the Flint River in central Georgia. Each week teaches the art and science of Integrated Wild Pig Control™ in a carefully documented case study of whole-sounder removal. The purpose of this show is to teach viewers how to eliminate feral swine populations from their entire county using future Farm Bill funding in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. @Steve Ausrin - No. Most state legislatures do not allow feral pigs to be transported alive or raised for slaughter. Putting an economic value on feral pigs would only promote the conservation efforts of a non-native, agricultural pest for profit, be counterproductive to reducing feral pig populations and compete directly with commercial pork production. Also, the threat of disease transmission from feral pigs to domestic livestock is a major concern to the farming industry. Several of these diseases are swine specific (both feral and domestic) but others can affect sheep, goats, cattle, horses, dogs. cats and several species of native wild mammals. Infectious diseases that are significant to livestock include Swine Brucellosis, Pseudorabies Virus (PRV), Bovine tuberculosis (TB), Foot & Mouth Disease, African Swine Fever and Classical Swine Fever (Hog Cholera). Feral pigs are known to carry bacterial diseases such as Brucellosis, Leptospirosis, E. coli, Salmonellosis, Tuberculosis and Tularemia; viral diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF), Classical Swine Fever (CSF or Hog Cholera), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Hepatitis E Virus (HEV), Influenza A Viruses (H1N1 and H3N2), Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2), Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Pseudorabies Virus (PRV), Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) and at least 45 different parasites (external and internal) which pose a parasitic disease threat such as Toxoplasmosis and Trichinosis to wildlife, livestock, pets and humans. Zoonotic diseases transmissible from feral pigs to humans include Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, E. coli, Salmonellosis, Toxoplasmosis, Rabies, Swine Influenza Viruses, Trichinosis, Giardiasis and Cryptosporidiosis. Farmers recoup the initial trap price by eliminating future crop damage from feral pigs. They easily pocket more annual crop income by only planting once in the spring and harvesting a higher yield per acre in the fall. Unfortunately, many farmers waste fuel, time, money and seed every spring by replanting their fields multiple times after feral pigs destroy it. The definition of insanity is to repeat the same mistakes and expect different results each time. The best way to eliminate future crop damage is to eliminate feral pig populations from their property. The definition of success is removing the entire sounder at one time to prevent any pig from escaping, surviving, reproducing or being educated to the removal process or product. Ending the entire generation at one time is the most efficient solution to the problem.

+Mary Ellis The fact that you believe a feral pig has the same right to live as a human reinforces your emotional position cannot be defended with a logical response. No one in their right mind wants to share their food source with disease carrying pests for health and sanitary reasons. Just because you are a "compassionate" person does not give you the right to contaminate the public drinking water, destroy private property or spread parasites and diseases to domestic livestock, pets, wildlife and humans. People like you are precisely the reason Best Management Practices for Human - Wildlife conflicts must be based on scientific research and not compassion.

@@johnchase4408 - Pigs are killed inside the trap enclosure because it is illegal in most states to transport feral swine alive. The US Department of Agriculture does not allow wild pork donations directly to food banks due to swine brucellosis and the pseudorabies virus. Feral swine can be eaten, but it is very important to thoroughly cook wild pork to 165 degrees. Most feral pigs harvested by JAGER PRO™ Hog Control Operators™ are either processed by guests or donated to local families and churches for food.

I don't know who Mary Ellis is. I can respect her opinion. Question for her. Does she call pest control for her home, or demand her land lord of condo management to regularly spray for pests. If she finds rats or mice in her home, will she just wish them away or call pest control? Doesn't insects and rodents have same right to life as feral pigs? If she has compassion for wild game animals or humans encroaching into wild life habitat, I can understand her view. But we are talking about feral animals that are destroying the lives of farmers and ranchers, pose danger to rural, sub-urban and even some city residents, spread disease, cause land erosion and destroy the ecosystem. She need to really think about what she is saying. It's not just about feral pigs' rights vs human rights. It's about feral pigs against survival of our ecology.There's speculation that the feral pigs came about as a result of over zealous vegans rescuing and freeing domestic pigs. People like Mary Ellis makes me want to believe such speculations.

+Mary Ellis Fencing is a logistically and financially flawed theory and does not address reproduction of the pest. A single sow will produce two litters of 6 to 10 pigs annually and their offspring will reach sexual maturity in eight months of age. 100 sows can escalate to 1,600 pigs (100 x 16) in one year. A fence does NOT stop reproduction outside the fence. A single American farming entity may plant and harvest 2,000-3,000 acres spread across multiple counties. One square mile is 640 acres which would require 4 miles of woven wire fence costing $31,792. It would take 672 hours of labor to build such a fence to protect a single square mile section of crops. The total fencing cost for 100,000 acres would be approximately $5 million requiring 105,000 hours of labor. Our demonstrated solution only required 8 hours of total labor from an expert using $100 of ammo and a $3,500 M.I.N.E. Trapping System. There were no pigs left from this sounder to reproduce or become educated to the process.

We caught 75 hogs in one set like that after they cleaned up 150#’s of corn a night by tying one gate and setting the other. With these remote gates we could of left it open on both ends and trapped them all at once.

On that same note why ot just poison the bait altogether? Or does that ruin the meat?

Your recommendation is unlawful as there are no poisons, toxicants or biological controls legally approved for feral swine use in the United States. Mainly because toxicants are not species specific and would negatively impact legal game animals such as deer, bear, turkey and raccoons who also eat corn. Secondary poisoning would also occur to scavenger, non-target species such as coyotes and buzzards who eat dead pig carcasses.

The illegal transportation and release of feral pigs for recreational hunting purposes during the past 20 years is the primary reason for our current problem. Sport hunters are directly responsible for the abrupt surge in population harmfully impacting agriculture, native vegetation, native wildlife, soil properties and water quality in the United States. Legislation must be passed in every state to stop intrastate and interstate transportation of feral pigs with heavy fines to criminals releasing them.

Our experience has observed this feral swine behavior quite often and the explanation is rather simple. It is the result of a previous failed attempt by an inexperienced person using a less effective product (i.e. portable box trap, narrow gate, trip wire, etc.) against the fourth most intelligent animal on the planet.

Feral hog is great eating. What we don't keep we drag off into the woods for the coyote's, bob cats, and other scavengers. Last time we drug one off we went to the site we left him and nothing was left. The bones and all had been taken as well. So it's not a waste> it is population control and they are fun to hunt. And great to eat. I'm in Texas and they are everywhere. They even get into new housing communities and tear up the landscaping and yards. Nothing but a pain in the ass unless your going to clean one.

I'm in northeastern NY state and whitetail deer are our problem here. It's very interesting to see how well you deal with these hogs though. We depend on dogs and hunters for the most part and it's definitely food for thought on how these may actually be hindering a larger better control operation.
@JAGERPRO
@JAGERPRO 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Hunters may legally harvest an unlimited number of feral pigs 365 days per year (in most states) but are either unwilling or incapable of reducing pig populations. Annual statistics confirm traditional hunting methods fail to effectively reduce wild hog populations to zero balance. Our Integrated Wild Pig Control™ approach is much more efficient and gives landowners faster results than sport hunting. Trapping will always be more efficient in the winter to target entire sounders. Thermal shooting operations will always be more efficient in the spring during planting season to target boar bachelor groups who avoided winter traps. Doggers and sport hunters definitely hinder a whole-sounder approach.

For example, agricultural areas with high food supplies have smaller home ranges and arid areas with poor food supplies have notably larger home ranges. Boars have larger home ranges than sows. Sows may reduce their home range when giving birth while their litters are being nursed. The cost of our M.I.N.E.™ Trapping System with (6) 18-60™ Flex Panels is approximately $3,000.

Our combat skills and training work equally well on a four-legged, non-native, agricultural pest which happens to be the fourth most intelligent animal on the planet. However, this is not wild pig hunting; it is Integrated Wild Pig Control™. Sport hunting is the practice of pursuing a game species for food or recreation using fair chase principles and methods. Integrated Wild Pig Control™ is the whole sounder removal of a non-native, invasive species as a means of agricultural pest control and disease prevention using any legal means necessary. Farmers, ranchers and land managers are NOT looking for sport hunters to shoot one pig. They are looking for competent professionals who are committed to investing the time and resources needed to remove entire sounder and solve their crop damage problem. Think of us as Orkin or Terminix for feral swine. Insect versus mammal makes no difference to the legal definition of a pest or the Best Management Practices needed to control them. Jäger Pro first of all I think you are doing a great job but I have one question forgive me if you think it’s silly why don’t you put the trap closer to the tree line and then cover the wire units that make the trap so the hogs don’t feel so exposed or am I completely wrong in my thoughts. Once again I think you are doing an awesome job and would drop everything in a heartbeat and move to America to do what you do. 👍🏻

The explanation for cautious feral swine behavior is due to previous failed attempts by an inexperienced person (landowner) using a less effective product (i.e. portable box trap, narrow gate, trip wire, etc.) against the fourth most intelligent animal on the planet. You are correct. Erecting a trap enclosure inside the tree line and camouflaging gates is preferred. The Hog Control Operator™ does not remember the circumstances four years ago.

What about laying a fence on the ground with a somewhat smaller mesh to help insure all hogs will have at least one foot on it and have it electrified?
