Feral hogs are tough animals. So much so that they have gotten the reputation for being bullet-proof. It is common to hear stories from hunters making claims of bullets bouncing off hogs or failing to penetrate their "armor"
The Myth of the Shield
Mature male hogs have a thick layer of subcutaneous tissue, commonly referred to as the shield or shoulder plate, which serves as a protective barrier for boars fighting for breeding opportunities.
The shield begins in the shoulder region and covers an area extending from the base of the neck back to the front portion of the hips. Older boars can have a shield as thick as 2 inches.
Although the shield of a mature boar can be tough and very thick, even a .22 rimfire will consistently penetrate through a 2 inch thick shield.
The two most common mistakes hunters make when shooting pigs are:
1. Aiming behind the shoulder. A hog's vitals are lower and farther forward than a deer, therefore a shot behind the shoulder will typically miss the heart and lungs and result in a run-off.
2. Not waiting for a broadside shot. Shooting a hog head-on or while it is quartering can significantly decrease your chances of getting an instant kill.
As shown at 03:28 in the video, even with several shooters aiming directly at the boar's head from close range, it required several follow-up shots to finish him off. The shallow angle of a hog's skull can cause a bullet to deflect rather than penetrate. Also, when hogs are feeding they are almost constantly moving, especially their heads. This further increases the chances of a misplaced shot when the margin for error is already small.
The best thing you can do to decrease your chances of a run-off is to wait for a broad-side shot. A broadside shot to the neck or behind the ear will almost always result in a dead hog.

** Why Do We Hunt Hogs? **
Feral hogs are a non-native and invasive species in Texas. Each year hogs cause millions of dollars in damage in the form of damaged crops, contaminated water supplies, broken equipment, transmission of diseases and injury to livestock.
Feral hogs compete with native wildlife for resources and also prey directly on the eggs and young of ground nesting birds and will actively hunt small mammals, frogs, lizards and snakes.
Due to their intelligence, adaptability, and prolific breeding habits, traditional methods of hunting and trapping have been largely ineffective in reducing the feral hog population. The introduction of night vision and thermal optics has greatly increased landowners' ability to mitigate the destruction caused by feral hogs.
Feral swine are not considered game animals in Texas and may be hunted by any means or methods at any time of year.

The normal wild pig doesn't seem to develop heavy shoulder pads like some x breeds. I operate a cold storage facility for wild game meat to be processed for human consumption. I see a lot of wild pigs, and some types of x breeds can have shoulder pads up to 100mm(4 inches) thick. They will stop a 150gr soft point .308 projectile, but the kinetic energy busts the shoulder blade and causes a lot of bruising. Needless to say, " I condemn any shoulder shot pigs". Head shots only these days. 99% of the pigs are head shot with 223's. Cheers Y'all.

Years ago, I used to go pig shooting on a couple of properties in south-west Queensland and the amount of damage these introduced feral pests cause to grain crops is astounding. They also kill and eat a lot of young lambs. They are cunning enough to separate the lambs from their mothers and then the lambs, whose eyesight isn't very good when they are young, will, in their confusion, run up to any four legged animal that they can see, which is usually a feral pig. That alone is a good enough reason to kill every one of these usually diseased creatures that you see.

Thanks for the info. I'm from California, the suburbs. I've fired guns, but I've NEVER hunted anything like what's on screen. Appreciate it, my man! Also: does anyone know where to get pig meat for poor people (like my family & friends)? I'm not talking trash against anyone who doesn't identify as poor, or maybe DOES identify as able to shoot for themselves whatever you need. I want to stop buying factory raised meat for a lot of GOOD reasons. I have absolutely NO INTENTION of going vegetarian, though.

To: Ultimate Night Vision: Can you tell us what caliber and type of firearm you are using? I read your information page under the video but did not see any information on firearms and the ammo/caliber used. Seems that most were fired with a suppressor on the barrel, but a few other shots were not. I have read/heard that the hogs/pigs can be killed with a .22 L.R. cartridge, but some other folks use "bottleneck" center-fire cartridges from .222 up to .30-30 Win. Or a 20 gauge Rifled slug.

As a pest control, wich I guess this is, then I can see why. But what I dont agree with, is the shooting in the ass/rear end of the animal. and the "happy"shooting. That is where it caps over, if you ask me. The Thermical image, is rock solid, and 100% awesome, and the heart , neck, and lung shots are great as well. Hope you guys understand what I mean. Because pest control is necessary.
@randomidiot8142
@randomidiot8142 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, you have good and valid points. It's ultimately a very destructive pest. We don't think about rat traps killing by grabbing a hind leg instead of the head, and why? Out of sight, out of mind. Unfortunately not every shot is good when they run. But the goal is to reduce numbers. Most people that get into this are sportsmen, the type that make an effort to drop game quickly and humanely. When they take their first shot on pigs, it's to vitals. After that the secondary goal of dropping as many pests by any means comes into play. And guys having fun doing it? We've been doing that since we had spears and bows. Partly a stress reaction, partly just a guy thing.

Slinging blood like a son of a gun; anything wrong with that? Those blood-slinging killings are the most wonderful killings for ugly beasts who are as deserving as those wild boars to have it happen to them. Likewise, most beautiful are the killings in which the ugly hogs live just long enough to know that they are being served their figurative pink slips; their eviction notices out of this thing called life just before their feelings of consciousness fade to black and their lights go off like the turning off of a television set or the shutting down of a computer. SWEET DREAMS, HOGS! Man, was that ever beautiful; the blood being flung around like cotton candy in a cotton candy-making machine; the blood flung around violently enough to see centrifugal force at work. HA HA, HOG!

And the one thing that I really do not care to hear is a feral hog's squealing when they get shot and don't die on the spot, but a good pair of "mouse ears" along with a CD player does a good job of keeping the noise down.
