They came over the line into New Mexico from Texas. The Game & Fish dept declared a 365 day open season with no license required. Texas requires a license. Now they are no longer considered a problem in New Mexico. I believe Texas is more interested in selling licenses than getting rid of hogs. Texas ranchers are selling hunting rights. I have never paid anyone to hunt them in New Mexico. They just want to confirm that I know the difference between a cow and a hog. They usually ask me to stop by on the way out and let them know how many I shot. No problem.

Why are we in Texas still requiring a license to hunt them? We should have open season, all year long, with no limit and no license. It seems we are more concerned with collecting that fee than solving the problem right now. Spending all this money on experts and studies when the answer is simple.
@cierakitty5 жыл бұрын
Do not need the license if you are protecting life, pet or property....called Austin that is what they told me...good enough for me. They will kill calves, dogs, cats, even humans are not safe from them and it takes nothing for them to get mad

If they want my help in thinning them out, I'm willing to help and supply my own ammo but I will not pay to help someone rid their property of these pests and neither should anyone else! Otherwise, just let the hogs destroy their properties. Same for Coyotes and Prairie Dogs.

We need to get word out to people that we need folks to hunt them. And we need the state to allow rifles for hogs in all the public hunting areas instead of just archery and shotguns. I don't think anyone in the government taking this seriously.

Sounds like the officials are doing little to nothing about this problem. "We're monitoring the problem." Need to have a twice a year Texas Pig Hunt and BBQ festival to promote tourism in the urban areas. Sustainable food source until they're gone. Maybe there is some kind of birth control or sterilization drug that can be put into hog bait. The problem being as bad as it is already, it's just a matter of time before they become a real nuisance and danger crossing more major streets and highways at night.

Hogs were and still are spread by hunters. They didn't fly into isolated areas of Michigan and Minnesota. The Texas problem was also spread by hunters. The urban expansion is not the problem, the pigs were brought into many of these areas.

One auto loading rifle (AR-15 for example) + one responsible hunter + one or two nights = one sounder gone. That would be a start. Invite the hunters in, permit them so you keep track of what's going on, and monitor results. Also, provide low cost processing for them.

My neighbor (at my ranch) raises peanuts one year then rotates to cotton the next . Unfortunately in the peanut years the wild pigs can tear up unbelievable amounts of peanuts in one night. They then cross over to my property to reach a river to drink. I now have to go armed all the time because of them. And yes, they can be very aggressive and dangerous!

You do have a silver bullet! People who know how to run a true perpetual trap. It's no secret how to build one and how to keep it running. You just need to trust those who know and let them do their thing. And it takes some money to build that trap and keep it running. A lot of money, labor, time and patience.

Not sure how northern wolves would do in the heat of the southern states, or if hunters would leave them alone or, but I wonder if relocating some of the overwhelming wolf population of Western Canada into some of these areas would work. Wolves along with cougars are wild hogs only real north American predators. Wolves would take them out. KNow this would be a problem with ranchers but maybe not as much as hogs.
@paulmcmanus96035 жыл бұрын
Sorry to say that would never ever work. According to Texas Agri officials, there are estimated around 2 million feral hogs running wild just in Texas. There are a couple of different hog species. The feral hog is just descended from a farm hog that got loose somewhere along the line. Hogs are absolute expert escape artists. They can scale a fence that is 6-7 feet high easily....I have seen pics of them doing it. Feral hogs have a sense of smell that is 10 times as sensitive as a bloodhound....they can sniff out corn kernels buried 12 inches below ground. Hogs have intelligence that is very high on the animal scale...higher than dogs for instance. Hogs reproduce as many as 10 piglets 3 times a year...THAT IS 3 TIMES A YEAR. Hogs will sniff out an eat all birds that nest on the ground. Did you know that hogs love to dine on snakes?? Oh, but won't they get bit you say?? Snake bite does not bother hogs...besides hog hide being very tough, a hog does not have the typical blood veins & arteries anywhere near the skin surface....blood flows using capillary action. Lastly, feral hogs carry all kinds of parasites, bacteria, worms, and other diseases that will kill legitimate farmers livestock. Then there are the Razorback hogs that are bad ass...and mean as hell too. Another story though.

The problem are not the hogs, the Problem is that we are not living with the land anymore. we humans, the ultimate Apex predator, are sitting in rooms and watching Video. So he is not doing his Job, too be a predator. (Beside this; eis there the possibility that we humans are an exotic invasive species in america?) The Job to be a predator is a 24 hour Job, not what we call now a day a Job. As Long as we not accept the implementation of the predator Job in our culture, we can not solve this Problem without the help from outside. So why not let those Boys and Girls solve the Problem for us, that are willing to do the Job as a predator 24 hours a day: Lions, Tigers, Leoprads Wolves, Cougars?

The cooperation among so many, many agencies is heartwarming! It reminds me of the police press conferences after a criminal has been captured: half the time is taken up with mentioning each and every police agency, sheriff, parking enforcement agency, dog catcher and the guy who gave out free hot dogs at the high level meeting where all these agencies cooperated the hell out of each other. Didn't anyone ever hear of streamlining? Reorganizing? Developing a strategy that covers a large area, instead of two dozen small ones, each with its own boss? The "cooperative" , let's all have another meeting approach is a gift t the hogs. If one agency figures out how to get rid of them, they just move over to the next one and keep on rooting and farrowing. It almost seems like the disastrous response to the big snowstorm that hit Texas, killed people, took out the electricity, and showed up the Texas way of governing as totally useless. If, that is, human survival is considered important.
