The reason why it feels worse is because it's not a world anymore. I spent a long time thinking about this and I realized that in order for a world to feel like a world, it by necessity must have mechanics that a lot of people would consider to be annoying in order to fully capture the emotion of depth. This includes but certainly is not limited to: 1) Meaningful travel time. This means that to get from point a to point b for the first time, a player needs to spend a long time running along the road, waiting for boats, trains, etc. This establishes something extremely important to a world, which is scale. If you take a portal from Ironforge to Stormwind, you have no idea how far apart those two zones are. If you walk from Ogrimar to Tanaris, you know that those two places are a LONG way away. This gives the feeling of the world being massive and teeming with life and danger. Flying mounts are bad for this exact reason. They destroy scale. 2) Scarcity. Gold and crafting supplies must be both valuable and difficult to come by. Entering a mine as your dwarvern blacksmith should be exciting due to the vast quantity of minerals you're going to find. If it's easy to come by money and supplies, exploration incentive and any goodies placed in the world are shallow and meaningless. 3) Dangerous world. A dangerous world forces players to work together. If you really need someone's help to do a quest, making friends is going to be extremely important. If you know people in the world, then that world feels alive even more because you know and are emotionally invested in other real people that are going on a journey with you. 4) Mystery. The world is complicated, multi-faceted and lots of things are happening in the shadows that you as the player are not privy to. Nothing is explained to the player via pure exposition. Quests are a mechanism of story telling that shows you, not tells you, what is happening in the world. NPC's pull you into the world by asking you to help them retrieve artifacts from Dire Maul. While in Dire Maul, you get to see how the Ogers have taken over this city, how nature runs amuk and so on. Rather than kadgar screaming at you OH NO THE BURNING LEGION, OUR ANCIENT ENEMY THAT WE HAVE FOUGHT FOR A LONG TIME LED BY ARCIMOND WHO TRIED TO INVADE THE WORLD 10,000 YEARS AGO THAT'S THE GUY THAT TYRANDA FOUGHT TWICE BY THE WAY, IS HERE BRAVE HERO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. 5) Class diversity. Simply put, Warlocks can do shit that no one else can. No one else can summon, no one else can banish demons, and no one else rides a horse that leaves a trail of fire behind it. There is one combat rez and the druid has it. Only mages can make portals. Only rouges can pick locks. Every player class has something special that only they can bring to the table. This means that even the worst of players have special skills. If you need a warlock then you NEED a warlock, no if ands or buts. More world depth building in a small way. That's just off the top of my head but you get the idea. TL;DR the game used to be more like a DnD campaign.

I am so glad this got uploaded. Feralas is my favourite zone in the whole game, and the music makes it only more perfect. I remember leveling a Night Elf Druid there, but I did not care about my surroundings and only wanted to get the job done. When I decided to level a Troll Rogue, I came back here to give it another shot, but this time, the zone grabbed my heart and wouldn't loosen it one bit. As someone who loves Kalimdor, this zone stands for everything this continent is about. It seems peaceful at first, with a mysterious note, but the lands are unforgiving and it is easy to get lost in the immense wilderness. The races in Kalimdor are friendly and peaceful, and always have their open for allies. Settlements feel like a safe haven before you embark on further explorations. People often forget to appreciate the calmer and more harmonious zones in the game. Every zone nowadays is about impressive storylines, cluttered with settlements and monsters, and cinematics after every event. But it are zones like Feralas that truly make World of Warcraft to what it is. These zones lie at the very heart of the game, and no expansion can change that.

The way I felt while exploring WOW is I guess how people in the old days used to feel while exploring the world. It's something we're missing from our lives nowadays. Exploration and adventure, it's something that's so inherent in our souls and in who we are as beings, but also something we're deprived of entirely in our lives. I guess this is why we love RPG games so much, they're like a substitute for what we lack in reality.

More than 14 years ago in my second guild , prior to reaching lvl 60 GM told everyone in the guild : lets head out to Dire Maul! From that moment on, as a balance druid - which means Thunder Bluff is close by, I was regularly present in The Feralas. That surroundings, nature raw in its beauty - stole my hearth . But not just that as a guild member we were frequently raiding there. Dire Maul has a LOT of secrets :-). For example library with elves , where you could actually hear about Illidan - for the first time. Arena pit where You could fight dragon - forgot the name of it. Latter on my own I have explore the area thoroughly - and as many of You already know it was the Elves ancient place of power. Basically You could actually feel it in the game... Expansions came after one another...but still Feralas was a safe distant heaven from big crowded cities . I `ve finished MoP and with Wow. During this time of Pandemic crises , I found some extra time and look upon what I have missed in Wow. It is really sad for me the destiny that has fallen upon the Night Elves, they should move back to their roots and Feralas is the great spot for it. Beside the Feralas , Ashenvale and Moonglade are my favorite zones in Wow from the first day , I have started to play Wow to the last. Thank You for making this video - IT brings tremendous flash back and countless hours , I have spend in Wow.

I am not an old player in WoW. I've heard of it from everyone I knew, but I hated the business model. Thought it was a scam even at the height of it's fame during the Wrath of the Lich King. The only reason I finally bothered with it was because my wife bought the base game for me at half price nearing the end of Legion. Starting out, wandering Azeroth took my fucking breathe away. With each new region I traveled through, it felt like I was on a real trip like the ones those douchebag co-workers traveling across Europe. The sceneries were marvelous and the music just made it more immersive. The little stories in and around the Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor up to Outland, Northrend and even Pandaria made it feel like the world was dynamic and alive. It was an experience that I never dreamed was well worth the money, and during those earlier days I was glad to have been proven wrong. But things started to feel off at some point. I started off on my journey alone and thought I would eventually reach a stage where I would have to ask for help. Such a moment never came. I had to actually turn off my exp gains because things were getting too easy. At first I thought, "meh its okay... even if I have to fabricate the experience, it's still going to be a good adventure! I'm sure it'll get better once I reach the higher levels." It never did. Not only was the gameplay becoming less complex, but the story was also becoming dumber with each expansion I passed, and the experience appearing shallower and shallower. Upon reaching level 100 and disappointed with Draenor, I caved and bought Legion months before BfA's release to catch a glimpse of the game's future. I maxed 110 barely satisfied and finally realized that the game was dying. I imagine that this game, once upon a time, started out as a homage to the history and lore it reveled in. A love child between the gamer-developers and it's player base. But now, I sense an avaricious hand choking the life and depth out of the game for a few more extra shillings. I ended my subscription during BfA's launch because I could no longer be bothered to support the idea that quantity is prioritized over quality. I thought this game would drown me in a deep ocean of imagination and storytelling. In the end, it was no better than a swamp, reeking of mediocrity and becoming less appealing the more you stay. Truly a shame.

I used to play on a private server called Molten, set in Cataclysm. I played on an instant max level server, and the different races each had their own starting zones. For whatever reason, Camp Mojache was the Orc starting zone. I distinctly remember making an Orc Fury Warrior, and upon spawning here, being ganked by several alliance players. Every time you tried to buy gear off the npc's the devs had around the town, some Alliance jackass would gank you. There was even a spot you could only get to by flying, and hunters and casters would often camp up there and shoot down at people. Eventually, I made it to the teleportation NPC, and left to gear at Undercity, the Undeads starting point. I geared there, got glyphs, weapons, did talents, etc. I went back there, and I threw everything I had at those bitches. For hours, and I mean HOURS, I was fighting these jackass spawn-campers. I eventually found some friends in some noobs that were just trying to get started. They would buy a weapon off the vendor, and charge into the fray to help however they could. I remember one Orc Death Knight was spamming Ice Chains on a Night Elf Hunter I was fighting, and it helped secure the kill. Eventually, I did loads of PVP content, and every day I would return to this zone, and watch over the new players. Anytime I saw some spawn camper, I would destroy them with my duel wield zin'rokh destroyer of worlds. (www.wowhead.com/item=64377/zinrokh-destroyer-of-worlds) This zone came to be one of my favorites, and I would hear this music on a near daily basis. I would have to chase people around on my flying mount, trying to engage them; hearing this music the whole time. I eventually built up a small reputation as the noob savior, and people would whisper me when I was off somewhere else, asking me to come to Feralas and help kill some gankers. I freaking loved that time of my life, and I will never forget it. If anyone reads this that played Molten, I hope you remember those days as much as I do. We had a great thing going there.

My all time favorite zone, as an alliance player I always make sure to visit this spot and sit for an hour and just take it all in... WoW is not what it once was but it is still gorgeous in all aspects.

I remember my first experience leveling in this zone back during Vanilla. Initially some of the quests were still too hard for my shaman to attempt. I remember just grinding hippogryphs for hours until I was strong enough to finally move forward. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful zone to grind mobs in.

I don't quite remember why, but I really spent a LOT of time doing quests down there, it was related to a quest for a weapon, or reputation, or both... but i raided weeks and weeks for that, thanks for the memories ;:)
