Semiotics can get quite complex but interesting, like the debate between immunologists and semiologists about in what sense cell-level, or dna-level "information exchanges" count as "semiosis". I enjoyed Umberto Eco on the subject. Or the issue of how the concrete particularity of direct sensory data gets simplified into schematas in experience due to the obligatory generalization of language and thereby how perception is conceptually filtered...and many other issues.

Wait, I'm confused. Is the "signified" the dog itself (sort of like a Fregean referent, and/or extension)? Or is it the *idea* of the dog (sort of like a Fregean sense, and/or intension)? Or something else?

Signifier is the dog; signified is the concept. The ‘togetherness’ of signifier and signified is a dialectical premise of the sign. That dialectical ‘togetherness/relationship/ coinciding’ is a linguistic object of focus, such as where structuralism would, ideally, stem from; and all other epistemological claims.

The word "beauty" is a signifier and the feeling/meaning is what's signified. Although not physical, it still is the "Signified" ... as far as I understand

I was sitting here stressed out for my exam and then... I find out you have a sense of humor; "okay". And then I find out you have a dogggie!!!! "I'll never be able to get that image of the paper paralleled with the doggie." Guess I found my own personal image/signifier for the theory of signs. :))))))))
