Thank you so much! Writing an assignment on Saussure and Pierce and was really struggling to find resources to help me actually understand Pierce's theory.

I would add 2 things to this video: firstly: both sides of Saussures sign (signifier/signified) are mental concepts. They do not represent anything in the real world or a real object. Even though one might think the signifier could be the phonetic image and so it would something which is uttered in real life but it isn't. The signifier represents a mental image of the phonetic realisation that we have in our heads before we utter it. Saussure explains that with the fact the we can also read in our mind without actually saying the words that we read. Secondly: the relationship between signified and signifier is arbitrary for Saussure but at the same time these 2 sides of the sign cannot be torn apart otherwise each individual side would be a chaotic "mass". If the two signs would not be connected through langue we could not tell 2 concepts/signified apart from each other since we do not have the fitting signiefier. The same goes for if we have 2 signifier/ phonetic images, if we do not have the fitting concept/ signified for the two we cannot tell them apart from eacht other. I think these two were missing but still great video to get introduced into this topic! I hope it was understable what I wrote since English is not my mother tongue and I also learned about Saussures theory in a different language.

Thank you so much for explaining so clearly! but I have a little question, is the skull an icon or an index? Because the picture looks like the real skull and I thinj just like the sign at the bathroom, when we see the sign of skull, we know it's very dangerous here🤔

Small point, but it's C.S. Peirce (prounounced "purse"), not "Pierce." Otherwise a great summary!

All these big words that I don't know are pretty exciting - I don't know anything about communication as a degree, but I do really enjoy learning about different disciplines and social sciences (is communication a social science? lol)

You are so cute, educated and smart. The guy who marries you will be a lucky man. I love how you use your hands while explaining in this video. I was not born in Canada, I have lived in Canada for 9 years and grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. I am south asian.
