Beethoven speaks of poor health in the beginning, then he mentions that when he tries to forget it, he's "flung back by the doubly sad experience of his bad hearing." I thought that at the beginning Ludwig was speaking of his hearing loss. I just realized he's referring to his GI issues, then he adds that he's losing his hearing, as though perhaps he had not originally intended to mention it.
