Hi Lance, I ran into this last summer with my To20 s/n 360 with spring hole. Just drilled it like you did and all was good. Had the gasket instead of the o ring so it all went together great. Many thanks to you and your channel.

Drilling the spring catch hole at the end or on the flange will change the spring force. Just check you are getting enough pull force with the new location. The end hole may have been added to give more stretch and somewhere along the line the flange didn't get deleted from the casting tools.
@BundyBearsShed3 жыл бұрын
In other models they used it but with the hole I measured it all and it has the same tension now as original. Fitting it in the new hole put a heap of tension on it.

Hello Lance, Interesting information. Not a problem that can't be fixed. Great to be able to get parts for these special old tractors. Thanks mate!! Regards, Charles @ Nerimbera.

Thanks Charles, Yes with a bit of tinkering it will do the job.

Looks like a tiny bit of core shift in the housings, or the factory made a new casting pattern that was just a fraction different. Personally I'd just give the corner of the cylinder a little rub with a flap wheel of grinder to get clearance. Great video mate. Regards Greg

You could for sure but I didnt want to put that out there as someone would get the big grinder out and bugger the cylinder I was thinking.
@steveneugebauer24973 жыл бұрын
Taking just enough off the corner of the cylinder would be my preferred choice rather than the gearbox. But i do see your point Lance some would hack a lump off with a grinder and go too much at it.

Another excellent video. I might dive into the lift cylinder housing at some point in the repair/restore project and this information will be golden. We finally got some decent weather today in Alberta Canada after four weeks of polar deep freeze. Groundhog day is three weeks away, then spring around the corner if the little rodent gets it right. I had this exact issue with doing an 1968## and 3375## serial number tractors only a few months ago. Fit perfectly on the 1951 1968## tractor. But the 1953 3375## tractor it needed the holes drilled and the spring issue doing too. I also fitted the 9N piston with the rubber seals in as I thought it was a better design. Nice to see it wasn’t just me with this issue. Nice video of explaining it too.

I can't see the big deal. I got 1 a couple of yrs ago from you, it could have been sparex ,can't remember for my TED. It say's on the box fits 8/9n ford. I had to drill out the holes, that took 10 mins. The cyl fit with no fouling on the housing. If it needed grinding I would have ground a slight bit off the cyl, as It takes a while to clean out all the crud and shit from inside the casing, I wouldnt want to contaminate it with metal fillings. Anyway, I'm just grateful you can still get the parts for these babies. Thanks , great vid as usual.

Its not really a problem for most people but it is a huge rip it up the supplier and hang shit on them everywhere for others. Hopefully putting the info out there everyone knows exactly what they are up for.

Hi Lance. Firstly I want to say how much I like your videos. I would not have had the confidence to anything on my Fergie without them. One thing I did notice in your video when testing the different cylinders was that you were sliding the cylinder forward without any bolts in place and then looking to see if there were any marks but surely there would have inevitably been a mark as you slid forward even if things were the right size because there is nothing else to stop it......or am I missing something?
@BundyBearsShed2 жыл бұрын
Ill have to re watch it but I think the marks I might have been looking for was if the o ring that surrounded the main oil passage was going to line up and not be half covered.

What thread do the Ferguson use BSF? . Just a touch of grinder needed ! Thanks for your time
@BundyBearsShed3 жыл бұрын
Usually UNC for the coarse threads and UNF for the fine ones.

Hey Lance is there a reason why you can't take a little off the cylinder to make it shaped like the standard one. It would be interesting to see the the cylinders bolted together face to face to see different profiles. Cheers mate 👍
@BundyBearsShed3 жыл бұрын
I think you could for sure but I didnt want to put that out there in case someone got carried away and went too deep and compromised the cylinder strength.

I think I would grind the cylinders. Grinding in the case just makes a lot more work trying to keep the grit out.
@BundyBearsShed3 жыл бұрын
Yes but I was concerned that a novice would get the big grinder out and weaken the cylinder.
@timmieclark99763 жыл бұрын
With the gasket in place, and the cover being slightly higher, would the cylinders still fit ok?

@BundyBearsShed3 жыл бұрын
Yes we can get this to work on the later serial numbers ok but this is a bit of a warning on what you might need to do.
@Ghis1964s3 жыл бұрын
Don't strip out the tractor's casing. Bolt the two cylinders face to face together, that way you see that the "scare/corners" are too be shaved off. Shave them off with a grinder. Problem solved. I'd rather change the cylinder again than risk cracking the tractor's housing. Way quicker and cheaper.
@BundyBearsShed3 жыл бұрын
The 1 or 2mm on the housing will not weaken it as you are matching it with the other side it is just a casting slip from factory. Keep in mind the bolt almost goes in so not much to remove. By grinding the cylinder that is where the hydraulic pressure is so a lot of care needs to be taken to check casting thickness so the cylinder is not compromised when it reaches full pressure. If there is a failure of a ground cylinder there would be no warranty or come back on the supplier.
