Interesting fact: The Leveler is a 3D model painted to look like 2D animation. Youngheart Productions were the second animation studio (after Walt Disney Studios) to use software to digitally paint cels and integrate 3D models/scenes and 2D drawings into traditional cel animation.
@fangsabre2 жыл бұрын
@[Λlec] (corvette) no it's a software called Deep Canvas (or at least Disney's is). Basically, it's a 3d model integrated onto a 2d background, and then 2d artists paint onto the 3d model itself. It's how the tree surfing in Tarzan was done
@GreyWolfLeaderTW2 жыл бұрын
@[Λlec] (corvette) Not quite. Rotoscoping is the hand-drawn tracing of frames of live-action film, projected onto the reverse side of animation paper, to produce more realistic lines and movements. Many animated films do use rotoscoping (most famously Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings, where a lot of the film and its characters and battle scenes were rotoscoped from live actors). It is a technique that was developed by the Fleisher Brothers way back in the 1920s. But what we see with the Leveler is a 3D model made entirely within a computer. The traditional 2D animated cels are scanned into the computer after they are initially hand-drawn and are then layered with the Leveler's 3D model.

I really never understood what Hexxus was. Is he like some kind of entity or diety that just becomes more powerful the more smoke he absorbs? I know he's supposed to represent pollution. But he's such an fascinating character that takes many different forms.
@bikesgoodgasbad2 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting take on the archetypal commodification of nature itself, similarly exemplified by the Once-ler in the original 1972? animated Lorax. In that one we never see the Once-ler’s face, and he ultimately even utters the devastating line “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better, it’s not.” His faceless centrality and naively confident belief that essentially ‘successful businesses are good’ allows him to represent the side of humanity that any single one of us can become if we are not careful and reflective in our choices, and of course that there really is no Lorax coming to save us - it’s a big us vs them where the lines aren’t so clearly defined but swift action is needed to stop the ever present Hexxus, which I see as the classic little devil on the shoulder encouraging pure selfishness at every turn. We really gotta abolish Hexxus in all forms lest we end up in energy-sucking homes so filled up with Thneeds that the only help we can offer is that final line from the Once-ler; hoping the cycle breaks at some point.
@Dawnrunner42 Жыл бұрын
It’s mentioned in the film’s intro. Hexxus is a spirit of entropy and destruction, brought to the earth’s surface from deep underground by primordial volcanic activity and first given form in the ash clouds, pyroclastic flows, and general smoke and smog the volcano created when it began burning the forest. There’s an implication there that he’s part of the natural order too, considering he too came from the earth and can’t be killed, only imprisoned.

Is Ferngully an actual rainforest on the map, because those two don't seem to wonder what exactly is Ferngully and how far is it from where they're stationed.
@GreyWolfLeaderTW2 жыл бұрын
From what I've read and seen in documentaries about the making of the film, Fern Gully isn't an actual rainforest, but it is directly based on the real-world rainforests of southeast coast Australia, the Gondwana Rainforests between Brisbane and Sydney. Those real rainforests are endangered primarily due earlier on to clearcut logging that was done in the 1970s, although the practice was curbed and modern tree farming techniques (growing trees like crops to harvest in one smaller territory rather than simply cutting through an entire forest across an entire region) were introduced. But more recently, the forests are still in great danger due to the infamous rampant forest fires that occurred in the 2019-2020 dry season. The author of the original children's novel on which the film was based is Australian children's author Diana Young.

I suppose you're not supposed to think about it too much, but how would the humans know where Ferngully is?

Oh Don't try to think about alot of things in this movie.

@Lydia Frazier no I'm just saving you the headache, because alot of the movie is very surface level, it's a nice surface level, but the moment you try and make sense of the world the more holes you find and things fall apart.

Because it’s a forest location within the world of the movie. Unless I misread it and FernGully is the tree. Though I read it as it was a preserve or something where they weren’t normally supposed to cut down trees or something.

The best way to kill Hexxus in his slime snake form is to freeze him with liquid nitrogen and he’ll shatter when frozen or have Mr. Freeze freeze him.
