Q&A: Our French Property Journey, Kids Adapting to Schools & Evicting the Previous Owner
In this long-awaited Q&A, Ryan and I sit down to answer all the burning questions you've been asking! From the auction process of buying our French property to the tricky situation with the previous owner who refused to leave, we cover it all in full detail. We’ve had loads of questions building up, and we're excited to finally answer them for you in this video!
We chat about our experience moving to France, whether we're learning French, and how we've managed to get by not knowing the language. We also dive into how we integrated the kids, how they became fluent, and their experience settling into new schools. I get real about feelings of homesickness, how we’ve all adapted to living in Cannes, and city life in general.
Of course, the biggest question of all-what happened with the previous owner? Did we finally manage to evict him, or is he still around? We go into the full story, which was one of the trickiest parts of our journey so far.
This video is packed with helpful info for anyone thinking of moving to France or just curious about our new life here. Thanks for all your support and questions!

I enjoyed this Q&A so much. Yes sit down talks are nice too watch. Fern I like the woman you have become. You may not realize it but over the last couple of years, you have changed a great deal. At least it seems that way to me. And for the better I think. Or maybe just your flog style has changed. Either way I like the new you. Before you were all about makeup and clothes and appearance. Now it's family and living life. Not so much emphasize on looks but more on quality of life. And I really like the new you! And what you did with the man was above and beyond kind and more than most people would have done. Well done and no need to feel any guilt. Can't wait for the next vlog.

You were so kind to the horder. I have been going through life thinking of myself as a "good person" but listening to your story I actually started feeling shitty about myself and looking at you like an absolute ANGEL. Your property, an assload of stuff to do and renovate, little kids and absolutely no cooperation of somebody who is blocking everything. Crazy. You are SO KIND and stayed so respectful. I am in awe. All the best karma to you really! 🙂

The old owner is obliged to hand over the keys. None of what you’re saying makes sense under French law.
@katbar6066
@katbar6066 6 сағат бұрын
In Australia the RE Agent would have a set of keys but the owner would give any spare keys to RE Agent at least a day before Settlement so that when the new owner picks up the keys they should get them all. Having said that the usual practice for most people is to change the locks the day they get the keys. You would never have to collect the keys from the ex owner.

It is very sensible to learn the French language. You have no choice. You are living in France now. You really need to become fluent. Good luck. I was brought up in The Netherlands, and was educated in 4 languages. This was standard 'in my day'. You will only become fluentbin thevforeign language when you live in 'that' country, as you do in France. You will get there! I have lived abroad since I was 22. In two different countries (two different languages). Eventually, you will acclimatise. I did. You do grow away, as you will develop differently from your old friends 'at home'. This is to be expected as your life has changed so much from your old life in the UK. I wish you happiness and every success in your journey. Have fun! PS: Do go to the French cinema (which is great) and watch this year's latest version of 'Le Comte de Monte Cristo' featuring the French actor Niney. Brilliant film. I am sure that you know that the film is based on a book by Alexandre Dumas. I loved the film. Do give it a go! 😊

Good on ya Fern! Well done for forging forward and trying to learn French. It’s such a beautiful and romantic language. It’s fantastic that both of your children are fluent also, so cool for you all that you have embraced a new life and are now are living your best life…and so brave to take a leap of faith to come out of your comfort zone for a better life for you and your family 😃 Missing close friends and family is the most hardest though…. My Son went backpacking and travelling 10 years ago….he is now married with children and resides in Australia…he is living his best life….💙How I miss him though 😊 Great informative advice you have shared on your journey, all aspects you covered will no doubt be very helpful for any of your viewers who have desires to move to France 😊I applaud your soft, kind, and emphatic approach towards the previous owner, who clearly has mental health issues…very sad, but nonetheless, you had no choice to move him out…and he has a roof over his head …very incredibly difficult for you …but you did it in a nice way😊 can’t wait to see your home completed 😊

Is it possible to build some kind of a fence or wall towards the garage? So that you feel more separated from him? I also think you need some girl friends there. That would help with the homesickness and the loneliness. I think you have an amazing time ahead of you now❤️🥰

Given they didn't even know the garage existed I'm guessing it's not visible from the property and if the property is in a gated community then they would be protected from intruders.

Your proof of title would enable you to take fairly speedy action, theoretically. However, you cannot boot someone out when the winter months arrive, technically at the start of 1st November each year. It is good that you managed to reclaim the whole property before that time. As far as Italy goes, I honestly think it would be best to avoid any involvement in that sort of venture.

Hi Fern, I am so happy to see this Q&A, mainly to see how you handled getting the previous owner out of your premise. My concern was because of Seth and Nancy. Please, please, please don't converse with him, you and Ryan have done more than enough~you bought the property, paid off his bill through the auction, brought him boxes, food, allowed him to stay in your downstairs~enough is enough. No more taking advantage of good nice people~I can't wait to see the rest of the renovation. Oh maybe you should close off that door and make steps inside that leads to the basement,~just a thought. See you Sunday! Ida

He should be in a mental institution, obviously. Can a private detective find his relatives and explain the situation? Why can’t the authorities move him to a proper shelter since he holds no ownership to the garage? Do your new neighbors have any advice for you? A lot of questions, but I feel for you and want the safest for you and your beautiful family.❤

The laws of France seem a little self -serving for their government entity and not caring so much about the people who purchase a home or land etc by making the process so difficult , In your particular situation with the old tentant who will not leave and has still not left..well, that is just inconsistent with their other rules...no protection for the home owners. I do not understand the garage situation at all...if it is on your property it seems it should go with the property...is it attached to the building or separate? and you did not see it in your viewing or your purchase? very confusing indeed. So, where is the man using a toilet..and where does he put his garbage..oh, he probably lives with his garbage...I would be concerned about my safety and my children's safety of someone on my property who does not seem to mentally balanced. I am glad you finally had enough and took charge to remove him from that room..now you proably will always have to lock it to keep him from using the toilet there etc. I would never buy in France after seeing so many Brits interestingly...buying those money eating cold chateau's....some times less is more. I am glad you like your new home...but the garage situation...wow...le'ts hope he does not try to make an addition to it and it become his forever home...it's just to crazy that situation.

Fern, Our kids are dropped into French school all the time in Canada; wish I had done it with all of mine just 2 of them...if they don't like it they will let you know...we call it French immersion, so it is adapted for children whose first language is English. the apt looks great so far; that is a tremendous amount of work that you all did and your Dad visiting at the end. You have had so much going on. all the best. Actually I wish my mother had done it for me as it is so much harder to learn once you are older.

You shouldn't reproach yourself because you have been so patient and helpful to him. You went above and beyond to help with the previous owner but I don’t think there was anymore you could do. In the end 0:02 being firm with him and telling him to leave was the best thing. It actually sounds like he is doing better. You said he looks well and is going out to the beach and chatting with friends so perhaps what he needed in the end was some tough love. At least you can breath easy now knowing your apartment is yours and there is no one there who shouldn’t be there, especially with your children there. I am from the heart of the south…. Northeast Alabama. For the past 30 years the Florida panhandle has been my home. I am still torn missing my country roots and family back home but now Florida is home. I long for there when I’m here at home and when I go back to my hometown after a few days I’m ready to be back in Florida and it’s only 5 hours! Now my youngest daughter lives in Kuwait and that’s a whole other deal. I am so happy for you all and totally understand everything. Thank you for answering the questions.

Really enjoyed your Q&A Fern! I'm so excited for the decorating to begin to come along on your trips to the garden centers for those lovely terracota garden pots! You always do such a great job with that! Cheers! ❤

Fern, I don't know how you made it through everything? I am glad that you were firm with the previous owner. You did the right thing. You might have done him a favor. Hopefully nothing but happiness from now on. Youu and your family deserve it. ❤😀🇱🇷

Loved hearing about the French language journey. Would love to know if the kids speak French to each other at home/argue in French. I’d love to hear them talking French. Well done Fern for French school 🎉

Fern thank you for your time today with Ryan clarifying the status of things especially with the previous owner. You sound a lot like me so I understand your struggle between engaging with him or not. And your position as a mother should be front and center so you are right to keep up your guard. You see him about so you know he is safe. And I do trust that if you don’t see him for a few days that you will contact the Authorities to conduct a Wellness Check to see if he is alive and well in the other structure where he is living. He is getting doses of Vitamin D now so he is on a path to wellness no doubt so thank you for having cared. Enjoyed this vlog and eager to see your renovations and interior decor evolve. Much love from across the Atlantic ❤

What is the area beneath your flat? Is that the garage the man is living in or is that a garage for your cars?

The auction process is pretty interesting. I’m so glad you got the man out of his house! He obviously has mental health issues, and I would stay away, not out of fear, but with your kids, you don’t have time!

I do admire you, all that done in such a short time! For me it took ab 20 years to feel really at home here in Sanremo - and now I have to say it was easier before: now I am homesick all the time, six months a year when I'm at home in Finland and the 6 winter months I spend in Italy hehe.Luck Fern with your studies. And who knows, maybe we'll see sometime in Sanremo. Waiting for your next wideo I send you lots of love

Thanks for the Q&A . I have a place in rural France and there are a lot of people that speak English so I had no problem whatso ever with the language there.,I think the only way to learn and pick up the language is try and talk in French with what ever little you know,you will pick up a lot of things in French . I am not fluent I understand more, but it hard putting it into a sentence. The patience you showed the previous owner must have been very hard to cope with. Fern you and Ryan were angles , you had to deal a lot with him plus helping him to sort out all his belongings, I am so glad your children have integrated well into French life.. Thanks for sharing 😘
